Amazing list. I never knew that Jack Kirby designed costumes for that company. HOPEFULLY he was the one who designed the Spider Man suit, and re-appropriated his own design for Marvel. Ah, historiography.

Spider-Man may have had two other "parents." In the Golden Age, there was a minor heroine named the Spider Queen who had a web gun and wore a red and blue (skirted) costume. Don't recall whether she climbed walls, however. But DC also had a Golden Age hero called The Tarantula (Jonathan Law) who also had a web gun and DID walk up walls using suctions on his boots. Coincidence, right?

Superman seems to also take inspiration from John Carter of Mars but instead of a Earth man travelling to a different planet and gaining superpowers because of weaker gravity, it’s a man from a different planet coming to Earth getting similar powers such as strength, speed and enhanced jumping abilities.

Without Moses, Doc Savage, John Carter and Samson, that would be impossible for both Siegel and Shuster to create a decent comic book heroic character back in the day.

Some people do say that there was a pulp hero called The Black Bat. At first you might think that he's was another inspiration for Batman but more like The Daredevil. Because The Black Bat was an attorney until one of the bad guys threw acid in his eyes but a scientist fixes eyes so now he can see in the dark and become a vigilante called The Black Bat.

I love League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Brilliant move, to roll the shared universe convention of superhero comics back to the roots of the genre. Alan Moore is all about deconstructing tropes. It's ironic that he goes about it by diving into them, but I believe it opens doors pretty effectively. The best speculative fiction carries its concepts, rather than be carried by concepts like most lesser works.

Stan “The Man” Lee has admitted in interviews that Nick Fury- Agent of S. H. I. E. L. D. was inspired directly by the popularity at the time of the TV series The Man From U. N. C. L. E. that starred Robert Vaughn as Napoleon Solo, a character created by James Bond creator Ian Fleming.

Oh yes! Thank you. I've long preferred The Hulk being a man who gets stronger while his brain gets more immature. As always thank you so very much for the videos. Especially for the mention of my favorite "pulp" hero Doc Savage. And don't forget, before Captain Marvel was introduced in DC, they brought in a very obvious knockoff, Captain Thunder! (Imagine Captain Marvel, but related to Native American dieties rather than European ones.) Plus Batman told the Shadow he was his inspiration once (in Batman comics of the 70s as I recall).

Captain Marvel following Superman is pretty obvious, but one difference that would have also obviously fit this topic is Captain Marvel's power set being explicitly attributed to Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury.

@4891MR Mercury was the Roman equivalent of the Greek god ''Hermes''. Actually both (Superman and Captain Marvel/Shazam) followed a Japanese superhero created by ''Suzuki Ichiro'' and ''Takeo Nagamatsu'' known as ''The Golden Bat''. The character originally debuted in a Kamishibai (paper theater) in the autumn of 1930. And is considered by some to be the very first Superhero. ''The Golden Bat's" superpowers include Superhuman Strength, Invulnerability, and the ability to Fly. This was 8 years before ''Superman'' first appeared in (Action Comics #1). And a full 10 years before ''Captain Marvel/Shazam'' first appeared in (Whiz Comics #2). However, if (writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster) had any knowledge of this character is unknown.

Another possible inspiration for Batman is Spring Heeled Jack. He was originally a English legend from 1837. He later appeared in Penny Dreadfuls in 1886. By the early 1900's he was described as dressing like a bat. His secret identity was Bertram Wraydon, had a butler and lived at Stays in Wraydon Manor. He is said to be the first modern day superhero.
