I was told by a friend of mine who has been a Foley Editor for more years than she cares to remember, that when it came time to do the footsteps for his dance routines in Tap, he came in to re-record his footsteps instead of having a Foley artist do the routine. Let's face it, if you want the sounds of the footsteps to be synched to the action, you might as well get the original to do it. While she didn't work on the movie, I have no reason to doubt the story.

Watching the Nicolas brothers in that scene is my greatest joy. These two men created something really special. It's the best dance number I've ever seen. A little story. When "Tap" was released I went to see it at a drive-in theater. After the challenge scene was over the ENTIRE lot went absolutely crazy. People were honking their horns and hollering out the window for like ten minutes. It wasn't until some years later when I rented the movie did I actually know what happens in the next scene. I still watch that scene on KZbin all the time. It's like watching Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle having a home run contest. Very special moment.

The trouble is that there are no longer studios with technical and performing talent under contract and economics which allow producers to gamble on original stories, instead of tired remakes, sequels and stage adaptations. Playing for safety is a blind alley. Making a musical 'now and then' is not an option. You need a boss who knows the art and the biz in charge of constant output, so turkeys can be tolerated. Arthur Freed, for instance.

They were tap dancing meets gymnastics! I can see why they and the Berry Brothers competed. Phenomenal group of talented individuals there. I do think I agree, but to me it's like a virtuoso musician. They're so out of anyone's league that they can't work well with anyone else, and look at all the treasures we cherish that came by way of shared acts. Can you imagine Lena Horne teaming up with the Nicholas Brothers? Cats and dogs, right? They were good but they were stuck in what they did, and when it ran out, they were run out. One of the best examples ever of this claim is the unsung Ray Bolger. There was always work for someone like him. From Vaudeville, to the Wizard of Oz, to '70s television, he could be his own and still leave room for others to shine.

In “Panama Hattie,” you failed to mention the legendary “Lena Horne” dancing with the Berry Brothers. She started out in the chorus at Harlem’s infamous “Cotton Club,” when she was 16 years old.
@jamesmartin94013 жыл бұрын
The Stormy Weather sequence was the better known and I'd say more artistic and deserves to be number one, but the Panama Hattie sequence is even more athletic and the ending is insane and causes me physical pain just watching it. Nostalgically and joyously, I love the scene from Tap. I'm surprised the Hines/Baryshnikov sequence from White Nights didn't get an honorable mention.

I also liked "Make 'Em Laugh". I think Donald O'Connor spent a few days resting after that one.

For all the jokes about Ann Miller getting her big break entertaining the Civil War troops, she really was phenomenal. She was still working it when she was old and I was a kid, and I'm old.

Wow! Just been transported to the 1950’s. as a budding artist in my early teens, the only form of entertainment back then was the cinema which I practically lived at with my Parents, must have seen nearly every movie made over the past seventy years, Ann Miller was the first celebrity I ever sketched & Painted in that fabulous Red Costume, it certainly was “To Darn Hot’ 🥵 over the next few decades I must have sketched almost all of the famous movie stars, portrayed in a Movie Magazine called ‘Moviegoer’ if I remember correctly! My favourite 🤩 male movie stars were Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly with Ginger Rogers, and Donald O’Connor, but I loved them all in their day! thank you 🙏 for the lovely memories, and sharing these wonderful old movies, look forward to more of your videos in the future blessings from an English Lady in the U.K.😊🤗🥀

What is magical is how tap dance originated. American tap is a fusion of Irish dance with jazz rhythms. It all started in New York, in the rough Five Points neighborhood, made famous in the book and move, "The Gangs Of New York". The story, as I remember, is that there was an Irish tavern in Five Points, where the Irish played their music and danced their jigs and step dances. As you see in Riverdance, Irish dancing is tap dancing, and it goes back hundreds of years, to unrecorded history. Anyway, one fateful day, a black man came into this Irish bar. And, he started dancing the Irish way, he tap danced. But, he danced a different non-Irish way with a looseness, and a rhythm that was new. So, American tap was created in New York by a black man in an Irish Bar. I wish someone would write that story and bring it to the screen. As far as I know, it is true.

Fred Astaire once said that Eleanor Powell was the only dancer that intimidated him. She was that good. And the Nicholas Brothers felt she was the best female tap dancer. That's pretty high praise.
@esmeephillips58883 жыл бұрын
In fact Fayard Nicholas said Eleanor should not be rated purely as a tapper bc of her versatility: 'she's better than everybody'. And Fred Astaire told Roddy McDowall he had been terrified to go up against her bc 'she could do everything, she was the best woman dancer probably in history'.

In my opinion, EP was the best dancer in history, male or female. She could do things no male could. Her athletic ability was unparalleled.

1:47 - It wasn't just Ann Miller's taps that had to be recorded separately. This was standard in Hollywood for ALL tap dancing on film from the early 1930s onwards. And the dancers making such recordings often or perhaps usually were not the same ones dancing in the film.
@markhedman18843 жыл бұрын
The Nicholas Brothers earned it.

While the Studio-driven "Fred and Ginger" movies are what most people remember, Astaire and Powell were the best. Astaire called Eleanor Powell the "only female dancer who intimidates me." As a tap artist, among the ladies, no one did it better.

"Make 'em laugh" is number 1 followed by the group dance number in "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers." These should have at least been mentioned in the honorable mentions.

The barn raising dance number is one of the most incredible dance numbers in history. I can't even imagine rehearsing for it! I get the feeling that she was determined to get a lot of minorities and women onto this list. The barn raising was all white males.
