Yep. And we didn’t understand the jokes because we WERE CHILDREN. I get that kids are smarter than people give them props for, but what child is going to understand something like a casting couch joke or any other adult joke for that matter? It’s the same reason why at the theater there were always jokes parents would all laugh at and kids would be silent and not understand why parents laughed.

Idris Elba spoke about this when HBO Max re-released Gone With The Wind and Blazing Saddles with Content Warnings. He said he agreed with how HBO Max did it. Recognizing the art piece may be problematic for modern audiences but playing it in its unedited form with a disclaimer notifying that. I mean, why couldn't Disney + just do that and avoid the edits? And yes, I know they put content warnings, but editing properties just defeats the purpose.

@@marthacontreras782, "leftists", you should do some research. Historically it's been CONSERVATIVES that have been involved in censoring movies and TV shows. It was Conservatives who founded the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) and are responsible for the the Movie ratings we have today. Not liberals. It is Conservatives who will complain when they see certain things on movies/TV shows, like LGBT, drug use, anything too political or anti religious. and that's just the short list.

When it started it was absolutely a kids show, but with some adult jokes. You can tell, because the target character was Bart. Censorship, does have impact, kids don’t smoke as much, children swear far less and are actually better mannered in this generation. However, I feel like they are more sheltered because they have less exposure to different personalities and situations overall, we learned stranger danger much earlier because we actually walked to and from school. People in this generation are more likely to get taken advantage of because street smarts is a real thing and when parents cart them everywhere kids simply don’t get it. I had someone ask me why would anyone want to hurt me after me telling them about a crazy time when I was alone and approached by a stranger. My good thinking got me out of a bad situation, that could have turned deadly. I couldn’t help but wonder if this person had been put in the same situation, would she have survived? I guess there are trade offs by having censorship, but are we setting up the next generation for failure to recognize dangerous situations and how to ultimately make good quick decisions when it matters the most. Earlier generations used fairy tales and for the most part they worked because they were scary and it allowed children to think about what they could do in similar circumstances.

@@Critic_Chris90210 : Disney is far from liberal, they are only after the all mighty dollar. And if that means selling so called "liberal" or "woke" content, then they'll do that. And regarding censorship, there really is little difference in the amount. The major difference is in what. While America deems the naked female body as "dangerous", in European countries it's usually extreme violence and gore that gets cut. You decide for yourself which is worse... Oh and... European Countries would never censor away things like the dryer. Parents in Europe don't let their kids be brought up by TV. They make sure that they know what's a dumb idea. Editing for television also included cutting out scenes to fit within a specified timeslot and to allow for commercials. And don't be confused by the "This film has been modified to fit your TV." that was just because most movies were filmed in some form of "widescreen" (9:16, etc) and most TV's until the last 10 years were 3:4.

@@Roadent1241oh lord, now I have to explain CRT TV's. I feel old. TV's used to be these thick boxes with a big glass tube as the screen, called a cathode ray tube (CRT). All of them had a standard aspect ratio of 3:4. Nearly every theatrical movie has been filmed to fit a wide, theatrical screen, but in order to get the movie to fill a standard TV at that time, it would need to be edited to fit on a 3:4 TV screen, otherwise the picture on the TV would have thick, black bars across the top and bottom of the screen. They would normally chop out whatever was on the far left and right of the image. Movies that were modified to fit a 3:4 aspect ratio would always have the message, "The following film has been modified from its original version. It has been formatted to fit this screen." This message hasn't been around since the widespread adoption of widescreen aspect ratio TV's and widescreen format has become the norm.

@@sonicpsycho13 I think I have a CRT TV still, I still have a 20-year-old 12-inch TV with a video player built in and no HDMI because it didn't exist back then XD It replaced the previous SMALLER one I had that just died one day, no idea how long my parents had had that but it was my first TV. I also feel old at nearly 30 with all these screens that actually fit whatever the heck I'm watching, I didn't know various films had the edges cut off them WHERE STUFF WAS HAPPENING until I saw a DVD version where obviously a computer screen fits things. I dunno why I've only ever seen that message on plane films though. That explains the Aspect thing though, I never used it because I never knew what it was. Too bad new TVs and stuff makes things like The Insanity Effect of Eternal Darkness obvious since they're made for these 'analogue' TVs with their channel and volume changing, shame because I can't emulate it properly and have the same effect.

Censorship is like anything else, should be used in moderation. Art is supposed to be controversial, because it sparks action. But once there's action, there should still be less censorship because there will always be a need for action. Also the world's a crule scary place at times, it's not all sunshine and lollipops. So some controversy is needed to be familiar with all people, but to also remind us of our past and to remind us not to make the same mistakes and to be better people.

Or... Maybe educate society so people can be responsible enough to watch/read/listen/play something and let them decide by themselves, using their own moral compasses, if that is something they want to keep or avoid, instead of just erasing it from existence. I should have the right to watch something as hideous as "The Birth of a Nation" or read the goddamn Mein Kampf and learn from how horrible those things are. If you just eliminate all traces of them...well, someone once said "The people that forgets its own History is doomed to repeat it". FFS, IT'S A MERMAID'S BUTT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT

Plus, if you happen to read the original Andersen, Perrault and Grimm tales the first Disney animated movies are based on, you'll find LOTS of messed up stuff. Like super R-Rated stuff. Because those stories were meant for everybody, not just kids, but as a entertainment for all ages, and nobody ever thought of overprotecting kids because they had to get used very early to the notion of the world being a potentially horrible place.

It's the failure of the current generation to understand satire. "Sexual assault isn't funny and jokes about it are inappropriate and should never be made" is exactly what the predators want as they don't fucking like attention. People trade sexual favors to get ahead in Hollywood and it's not a good thing, you think the guy making a jab at it with plastic barbie doll characters is in favor of it? The only people who take offense to this sort of thing are either people who have traded for advancement and hate the implication made at them or it's the predators themselves.
