Glee was one of the few tv shows in that period of time on television that had a diverse cast and talked about a lot of taboo issues that as a society we are still learning how to handle it. Therefore, there are many things that when we look back on them based in our consciousness and perspective of today it is with a certain look of criticism. However, there are other tv series like 13 Reasons Why and Euphoria that came a while after Glee and continued to repeat worse mistakes.

"Glee" was a guilty pleasure of mine, though I admit that the way they handled Blaine's "Bi" plot was Cringy, even in 2011. Kurt claims that NOBODY can like more than one gender, and Blaine's drunken kiss with Rachel was an "experiment." Sure enough, Kurt is proven right, and isn't called out for his blatant biphobia. 😤

I personally as a bi person don't think Kurt was biphobic, I mean, he never had trouble with Brittany, who is actually bi, before, he was just jealous of Blaine liking some who is not him, especially a girl, and especially being from the only person he knows is gay, and him being bi meaned less chances to be with him, BUT I do think he was completely wrong that he didn't accept another member from the LGBT community right away, independently if he was gay, bi or whatever. And I do think it's something that a teenage gay person who lives in Ohio that has as only experience an "apparently straight but gay person" would say, and I prefer him with flaws than a perfect TEENAGE gay boy. This show only stopped working, because Ryan Murphy doesn't know how to keep a show running at excellent quality more than a season or two. There's a reason (most) of these poor decisions occurred after Season 2, the moment most Glee fans agree is when the show's quality took a nosedive (but ESPECIALLY after Season 3). Eventually, the storylines/characters/general plot consistency slips, and it just becomes sloppy fanservice. See also Scream Queens, AHS, Nip/Tuck.
@RuuBjAh1

I wouldn't count AHS in that same category. Murder House is one of the weaker seasons, while Coven, Asylum and Hotel easily beat them. Freak Show, Cult and Roanoke were still good seasons, but they all had their shortcomings. Right now I'm starting on Apocalypse.

Don’t know if it’s related or not but Santana was going to be suspended for slapping Finn, but she had fights with Lauren and Quinn in the hallways and neither of them got suspended? Lauren was next level violent to Santana, and Santana slapped Quinn too Then they suspended Rachel for trying to change the votes to get Kurt to win class president but they did nothing when Kurt was constantly bullied before and the prom queen votes were changed to make fun of him Also the other students constantly harassing the glee club kids (and Sue, putting dirt on Santana & Brittany’s lockers, throwing sticks at Mercedes and embarrassing Blaine in front of the whole school just because he didn’t want to be on the cheerios) Gotta add another one, Finn was suspended for walking in the hallways only in his underwear but Mr Schue was making both him and Sam (Sam’s costume was basically just boxers) to appear like that on a play, Finn and Marley weren’t comfortable with the costumes they had to use for Mr.Schue’s assignments and they were pushed to do so still, it took Finn getting suspended to let him and Sam change wardrobes for the play

Glee was literally the definition of "we're so progressive and diverse, we have all these characters from different backgrounds. . .but we're just keeping them in the background." God forbid we create a black female character that's shy or timid and not just "sassy, finger wagging ,neck snapping" stereotypes. Or instead of just constantly referring to our Asian character as "Asian" we could refer to him as Chinese and make him an average student, ya know. Hell even our white gay character can not be obsessed with fashion. Smh, the music was the only thing that saved this show by season 3, but by season 4, not even the music was enough.

I disagree a bit with the Coach Beiste one. I have no experience myself, but I believe not everyone immediately knows whether they are trans or not. That decision was most likely made later on to make Beiste trans so they casted a woman to begin with. Plus I think some people take time to figure out who they are, and maybe that could explain his actions. At the beginning, he thought he was a girl and was supposed to be one, even though he was not a stereotypical girl, and maybe later he finally realized that he didn't want to be a girl anymore and became the guy that he finally was supposed to be. Also Sam stripping is not overly problematic. Yeah, its terrible, but sometimes that is what poor kids have to do to stay alive. How many underage male and female prostitutes and strippers do you think there are? It's really sad and terrible, but it's the reality for some kids.

I agree ferociously with all of this list, especially the teen/adult relationship storylines. It's really one of my pet peeves. I never find it cute or romantic. I just see an adult preying on a child. However, I kind of disagree with the Rachel/Mr Shue one. I found it really well handled. It's not uncommon for young girls to fall for older guys, but it's the adult's responsibility to "kill" that crush and put boundaries - which Mr Shue does. He's clearly uncomfortable with the unwanted attention, and tells her several times a relationship between them would be inappropriate. I think you should have gone with the kiss between Finn and Emma. There were so many issues with this one: 1. It came out of nowhere. Finn never, EVER showed any attraction towards Emma. In fact, I can count on one hand the times they interacted... 2. They clearly wrote it to show the viewers Finn was now an adult (in fact, the storyline between the nurse and Sam was supposed to be between Finn and her). As if you automatically turn into an adult once you hit 18 or you get out or highschool. Like, no, that's not how it works. And 3., Mr Shue's reaction made it a thousand times worse. Not only Finn was still barely out of highschool, he was very confused because he thought his life was getting nowhere. He didn't get accepted into what he thought was his dream school, and his soulmate was building a life outside him and the (very restricted) world he was still stuck in. The kiss was clearly a mistake born of that, but Mr Shue acted like it was premeditated and treated him like the adult he wasn't. (Not to mention it was so inconsistent with Mr Shue's character as he had been presented till then: a caring, empathetic teacher who knew the psychology of teenagers and therefore, shouldn't have held it over Finn's head like that.)

The way that the boys's low self esteem around the Rocky Horror thing was so bad and not addressed at all. Sam worked out a lot and didn't eat to lose weight and get buffer, never seeing the abs in his stomach. The Finn said that he hated his torso so much he started showering with a shirt on.

On number 8, you could've also mentioned how Finn kissed Emma in season 4. It's so creepy, awkward, and out of place.

I had to stop watching Glee because i couldn't stand Rachel. She annoyed me to no end. Every scene with her in it just drags the entire show to a grinding irritating halt.

I think the whole 'Mr. Shue planting drugs in Finn's locker to blackmail him into joining the Glee Club' part should have been somewhere in here.

I think that one, if not the most, nice contribution of Glee is that is made obvious that many of the issues stated on this video exist in a time when many people were not aware of it. And bringing things right to your face is what helps bringing issues to debate

Below college, pretty positive it is illegal to date your students, even if they are legal, because it’s an abuse of power. Teachers have legal rights to command their students and discipline them, so any relationship is an abuse of this power.

Absolutely. I think since many of the actors were a lot older than their characters, writers just forgot about students and teachers

Amber Riley has more talent in her baby finger than Lea Michele could ever dream of. Check out her solo work as Riley. FYI: I think this is the fourth one of these style of videos on Glee this month. Can we please do Friends. That is even worse at times.

It's kind of logical that it's worse at times, since Glee was 2009-2015, while Friends was 1994-2004, so many of the issues people nowadays would have with Friends had already gotten a bit better when Glee started

I think that at 5:50 y’all are kinda wrong because like if they did cast someone who was disabled as Artie then the directors and creators wouldn’t be able to do what they wanted to do with all the dream sequence dances and other things. Just a thought

At least, Sue Sylvester discriminated everyone the same - gay, white, asian, big, small, long, short, men, women, old, young, gay, straight, disabled, healthy. So I think, this doesn't count.

Yes the Older and Younger relationships are obviously frowned upon in life, but it does happen, I think that's why it was portrayed, also Sam stripped as a teenager for money for his family, I doubt he wanted to. I think that was kind of understood in the show, some of these are out of context imo

Y'all seriously need to chill. Glee is a show that was supposed to be realatable and a window for minorities and outsiders to feel safe. It did just that. The things you say were offensive weren't even that bad. Stop getting offended for other people. Also also IT WAS LITERALLY A COMEDY!!!

The writers of Glee tried they're best to represent most communities. But when it came down to it they turned every character into a stereotype. I'm especially bothered w how they handled Marley's eating disorder and how she was shamed for not wearing a bikini which is totally understandable or how she needed to apologize because she fainted like come on. Or I think at some point they made Marcedese, the only plus sized character fight for tater tots like that was rediculous I was disgusted. Also for a show that has a pretty big amount of lgbtq+ characters they seriously didn't handle the transgender and bisexual characters. I'm mad, just disappointed.
