What I do what other local scrappers don't in my area is I watch the recall lists before cutting certain items open. Like dehumidifiers. If you get the right one in, you just need to cut the cord WITH the tag still attached and peel the inside model label off and you still have the rest to scrap except that cord end. I have found 5 good ones so far that when I returned the cord end and label they sent me $170-$180 so far for each 6-8 weeks later. Not bad for an item going to scrap anyway. I could of had 1 more but some other scrapper beat me to it and just cut the cord off that I needed the tag from. I would like to see his face if he ever realizes he saved the copper cord but threw over a hundred $ away.

You only had to send the cord in? Not the unit itself? That does t sound right!

@@ScrapFatherScrapSon just the cord with the attached tag on the cord and the model number tag from inside the machine that is just a sticker. that is it. most recalls on other items work the same way. that is why you never remove that tag off the cords, you just never know when an item will be recalled and you need that tag for proof. once you cut the cord off you just made it unoperational. i also just send them the very end of cord with the tag with the three prongs but the rest of the cord goes in my scrap. if someone puts a different cord on it, the company cannot be sued because it isn't as it came from the factory. they leave it up to you to dispose the rest any way you want which would cost them alot of money tohave the whole unit back. they just want to know it was destroyed and made unoperational to save them future lawsuits. .

@@ScrapFatherScrapSon if you pick up stuff from a plumber watch your chinese sump pumps too from 2014-2019. cannot remember the name wihout looking at my cheat sheet in my shop. same thing cut the cord with the tag and send the other model tag with it and you get about $100 back on those and you still have most of it to scrap. alot of items they will want to send repair kits/parts but some items they just reimburse you whatever the average selling price is in your area. best part is they don't care if you are the original buyer or not, they just want that object out of the public hands to prevent lawsuits that cost them big $$S.

@@ScrapFatherScrapSon always look stuff up before you scrap. you get a knack for what might be on it or not and what they might ask for to show proof you got it. some are settling for pictures of it torn/cut apart lately to save on mail cost.

I don't have a truck so I only deal with non ferrous metals. Also I have a hand held wire stripper which paid for itself in no time. Just in my spare time I scrap but the money is great. Always a Benjamin in my pocket when I leave the yard

I do realize you’re in Canada and not sure about the strap handling of CRTs in Canada but haven’t been in the scrap business here in America for 37 years. I have never found enough value in the CRTs to make it worth time because it is nearly impossible to get rid of the leaded glass here. One thing you might take note of as I have never found any red brass on any water heaters, all water type fittings and yes, I have done Plumbing in my life as well are all made of yellow brass, and all gas type fittings are made of red brass, now I do know there’s other things out there where they use different types of components it made up of either yellow or red brass. That is neither gas or water. Besides red and yellow brass being made differently for identification purposes for its use it is also got a different thread Between water and gas gas is always a left-handed thread. Well yellow brass is always a right handed thread. By the time you do all the work to break down a valve, pressure valve here it would be on top of the tank to get that spring out of there You’ve just taken your four dollar a pound brass and made it about $.80 plus the loss of copper you get from cutting it and the time it takes you to cut it you couldn’t afford to pay somebody to break all that down for you. What do I mean break it down for you You’ve collected it you’ve done the work of getting it now if you paid yourself minimum wage to break that apart, you would not make very much money by the time you take your wages out of that and therefore it’s better to sell it as breakage yes you could make more clean per pound But by the time you do the labor to clean it, you’ve lost money. You can also get a higher volume of turnover by just sorting it into the brass breakage, and that can be yellow or red combined. Something you’ve never mentioned or talked about is white brass it is out there. It is very rare and if you find it, the scrapyard gonna tell you any different I’ll just say it’s yellow brass but white brass is worth about $15 a pound to your standard scrapyard and worth about $100 a pound on the international market.

In Arkansas (here in the states) you can run anything across the scales as long as it's made of metal and or electrical wiring. They take plastic too but it's based on weight not material so it would be no point I took my truck loaded full of stuff and only made $26

Hey Tin man I follow you a good while you gave me a lot of tips , now I have a good tip for you mate. Instead opening the Fridge compressors with an anglegrinder , mate, use a plasmacutter. They are not that expansive at all and it is totally worth to buy one. You safe so much time it opens on seconds. Really 20 seconds and it is open. Opens like butter. Safes so much time and efford. Copper #2 is $2.90 here in Upstate NY. I know Canadian money and US differ. Brass went down 35 cents. Empty Microwaves make cool Cans for screws, bolts and small metal for scrapping quickly.

I like scrapping nukes because I get lots of limit switches for electronics projects. Since I melt metals now, I don't care if the wire in the transformer is aluminium or copper. Also, there is always the capacitor and motors, which I can scrap or sell as-is.

Carefull sometimes the copper spools are actually aluminum. You can scratch it with a metal tool to see if it really is copper.

To the gentleman who asked me about white brass, the products that white brass is in is very high-end commercial plumbing/multi million dollar luxury houses within typically plumbing fixtures also can be found in some high and brass decorative slice kitchen ware items. Well it is an item you see rarely it is out there in 37 years I’ve probably seen a total of maybe 150 pounds of it

When it comes to number two copper wire, a general rule of thumb is if it’s a size of number two pencil, lead or larger it’s number one if it’s number two pencil lead or smaller purse strand it is number two, with this being said scrapyards sometimes tell you well bring yeah it’s sorted by gauge in and will pay you per gauge but they’re not telling you is on the backend they went all those different gauges of wires together And make a bale of it that is basically 14 gauge/12 gauge depending on the yard all the way down to all the smaller sizes of 26 and 28 gauge and sell it as a blended amount which they end up getting a better value on, then if they sold it by independent gauge. They could save themselves a lot of room and a lot of space in there warehouse when they collect it from the customer, I just simply blending it all together from 14/12 gauge down and one group with the exception of wiring my Christmas tree lights which is a completely separate gauge, however, we still process the same at the end user

You can clean all your old copper and brass with cheap muratic acid bath for 5-10 min and hose it off it will look brand new

Is there any kind of review on various Southern Ontario Scrap Yards for best price ? OR flexibility on what they take ? I just started digging for cash in scrap and use Gerdau in Guelph, just because they were the 1st I tried, and so far they are friendly to this lowly household scrapper.

Why does everyone discount aluminum wound transformers and motors?? I get $0.80/lb for aluminum wire, which is $0.30/lb more than clean aluminum. Strip the wire, throw it in a bucket instead of settling for shred price!!

I have lots of Line Cords, and my yard said I'd get best price if I strip all my coated/coveted wire. Should I shop for a more flexible scrap yard Which are the best, within a 100km, or so, of Kitchener ??

line chords as in romex or household appliance wire (ie vacuum chords,). If household wire, Zubicks is paying $1.73lb and my opinion appliance wire not worth time stripping.

Strange how different things are in different areas. In the mid west US no one pays for circuit boards or CRTS. You have to strip cables to bare wire to cash them in. Steel, aluminum, copper and brass are all welcome at the yard but that is pretty much it. They pay a flat rate per ton for appliances. Obviously most people strip the motors, coils and lines out of them first. One yard used to pay a flat per pound price for motors and AC compressors but they closed. Now you either have to strip them apart or take the ultra low "by the ton" price.

I went to a small scrap yard and they didn’t even check what kind of windings my motors and transformers had, they just give a blanket price for all of them. The price may be a bit lower but it’s worth it to not have to sort them.

I am sure you know that most of that is not actually tin. Probably aluminum, zinc or steel. The solder on the copper pipe is 95% tin and 5% silver.

I find it amazing that you still find "thick" tv´s and moniters,havent seen a single one in 10 years here in Sweden.Transformers arent accepted at our scrap yards whole,count as electrobic scrap,not microwaves or anything with electronics still on it

Yeah thats pretty much what i look for. But im not going to take stuff apart anymore. Ill cut the wire and drop the rest in the tin pile. Taking out transformers, motors etc. Is a really bad for hourly pay. My yard does take circuit boards, and they will give you high yield if you dont strip them, but its only 50 cents, and theyre light. Lamps ill take apart a little because the cord is longer if you do.

I live in Wisconsin and don't have to pay at all to get rid of crt tvs my garbage guys take them. I just set them beside the bin and on our bulk trash pickup day which is once a month they take them.

Copper aluminum radiator is your classifying. It is actually not radiator, but heat exchanger a radiator is either aluminum or copper, with heat, exchanger, being aluminum and copper.

This is a side hussle for me. Sometimes I will pick up items on my way to work or specifically go out on garbage day to look and find a few good items. I can’t quit my day job, but it a nice side spending hobby.

When you’re talking about electric motors and vacuum cleaners, it is the same as like your cordless tools. It’s not really a motor as a motor has a housing all the way around it that is independent for anything else and vacuum cleaners. When you take it apart, they molded the plastic to hold the armature that goes through it And has no actual housing around the armature. Therefore it is not an electric motor however when you get done, cleaning the copper and aluminum off of the armature, that is not 10 that is actually prepared steel and pays much higher price than 10.

CRT TVs And Microwaves are the 2 Items i Learned Right away ARE ABSOLUTELY NOT WORTH THE TIME They are big bulky time consuming and at BEST You will Get $5 Out of them But most of the Time its closer to $3 IF You don't get aluminum winding transformers and Degause Cables. The Time is Better spent searching for other items

Agree to disagree, sometimes you might not find anything, so why not get them? They are extremely easy to take apart as well. You don’t at least take the appliance wire? #2 copper here going for $4.37 lb. so worth it here.

It is a side job and can make some nice extra money on the side. The more you do, the quicker you can get at taken the items apart and also spend the time on the money making items and bring the rest in as ewaste price.

The spot price for tin is $17.70 USD per pound. Your scrap yard is most likely giving you $0.10 per pound for shred steel. There is no tin in steel. Tin is soft and has a melting point lower than lead. 231.9 C. Calling steel, tin is like calling a cat a mouse. It's stupid and ignorant.

yup, as I mention in a lot of my videos, tin/shred is just a category at a scrapyard here that is magnetic and thinner than 1/4. Steel is any magnetic metal that is thicker than 1/4 inch
