Well as I've seen in another video, in the scene where Joyce is about to flip the switches you see hopper is trapped. A few seconds later as the machine is starting to blow up you see that Hopper is no longer standing there, he's gone. So he's probably fled to the upside down, if he did it would've been when you saw Joyce close her eyes

I honestly feel like Hopper escaped somehow, but somehow got lost in the woods in the real world hence he's not been able to shave and everything. I literally watched season 3 five times and recently saw something right before Joyce switched off the machine. Hopper wasn't there, so I think he escaped. So it's either was caught or the woods theory because I think Stranger Things put the last scene after the credits to make us think that Hopper is in Russia.

Theory 1: Hopper May still be alive. At the end of the episode (of season 3), after the credits the Russians were told to not release ‘The American’. There’s also a chance that Hopper went through the back door where Steve, Robin, Dustin & Erica went through to avoid the Russians. Because of this, Hopper May have been caught by some Russians and taken to prison. Theory 2: The gate is open. At the end of the episode of (Season 3), past the credits, it also shows a man being attacked by a demogorgon. And we all know that the demogorgon can’t be alive unless the gate is open, which means the hostess is somewhere. But who knows, it’s just a theory. 🤷🏾‍♀️

At the end of season 3 after the credits they hint he was kidnapped by the Russians and survived the explosion , because they said they had an American in their prison cell. Hopper was the only “American” left there for the Russians to capture . Hope that helps knowing he may not be dead after all ;)

AKA hell!! He did tell El keep the door open 3 inches maybe that a hint the duffer brothers left to open the portal 3 inches to see him!!
