That entire third to final episode, Salem smacks Sabrina. He never did anything like that before, but he got smacked plenty prior to that. And within that same episode too. Efforts to hide partial deformities is always a good plus.

That wasn't the only issue. They apparently wanted to dramatically expand the cast to include a black cousin or whatever, and they turned HIM into the snarky and sarcastic character, making Salem redundant. So he can't even talk. :( Very sad. Its one of the reasons why I never watched the reboot, but apparently it was awful anyway.

@@idkalan00 The "allergic to cats" excuse never held any water. They shouldn't have hired an actress that couldn't be around cats in the first place if that were the case and they planned on using cats heavily in the series. The truth is the character became redundant due to squeezing in an unnecessary additional character. Coupled with the fact the show runners had basically a diversity checklist and they had to tick all the boxes and focus on that more than the story or plot of the show itself. There are plenty of shows that do inclusion right, but this one just wanted to be focused exclusively on ticking the boxes with the show's plot just being an afterthought and taking a backseat. The new character is the snarky and sarcastic one, as well as being the one in trouble with the witch law or whatever and punished so he can't leave their house. He WAS Salem, they just wanted it to be a black guy instead of a cat. They also made him gay just to tick that box on their list. If the character had stayed a cat, they couldn't have done all that, and they cared more about that stuff than the character or the source material or the fans of the original show or anything else for that matter. They also had entire episodes dedicated to the trans kid and blind kid, both of whom they gave superpowers to... Yeah... The whole show was just kind of a mess that they desperately wanted people to see as being "progressive" and you could tell. I saw one or two episodes and immediately pegged it for what it was, and a friend of mine watched the rest and confirmed it. The whole plot of the first season was "men bad, women good". I dont know if they even made a second season or not, my friend gave up on it too lol.

Every Salem moment was glorious, savage, meow-valas and purrfectly timed! My favourite though is not when he's being um catty, but when there's an election on and he wants to get Friday changed to Frid-ya! It's so darn funny the way he says it. Seriously there's nothing on TV half as funny, well scripted and perfectly cast than Sabrina, they should totally do a reboot with Sabrina married to Harvey and Salem has magic kittens! I liked Hilda and Salem best BTW.

It was pretty evident Salem and the aunties absolutely CARRIED the show on their backs. Not only people love most of their moments and lines, but also when you look at the audience for each season, the last 2 Seasons that had the least of Salem and the aunts had the absolutely ABYSMAL drop in audience.

@Christopher Bingham While I definitely agree, there is one thing the college seasons had that the high school seasons didn't: Harvey permanently knowing that Sabrina is a witch. I just love seeing Sabrina be able to use magic when Harvey is around, and especially when Salem can talk to Harvey freely. I really like how in the last season, Harvey came over to the house when Sabrina had Aaron's parents there and after Sabrina told Aaron then Harvey she didn't invite Harvey over he said "I know. Salem did. He said there'd be dinner. And fireworks."

Yes, she was clearly mellowed because they wanted to make a spin-off with her that ultimately didn’t get picked up, but the character came back a few times after that remaining a lot more sympathetic than she’d been in early seasons.

Christopher Bingham Even though Harvey did return properly in season 6 the show had committed to the Sabrina and Josh relationship. Plus, the filled up spell quota thing was overlooked or forgotten a few times. Then again, this is when the Witch’s Council took a few seasons off only to make a surprising return in The Whole Ball of Wax. That could have been an interesting direction for Hilda or Zelda, Witch’s Council reforms with aim to abolish the ball of wax thing.

@Christopher Bingham I thought so. I am glad it went the way it did; I think we all get relapses. For the sake of a few good jokes, they carried their own, and I view the two halves as two different series with the (mostly) same cast. The third to last episode is easily the one I rewatched the most, and love a lot. One of the precious few times a physical change is brought onto somebody, and there is a very real risk it may stick. And it leaves me wanting more. Truth be told, the entire series tells very obvious lessons to us, and handles them as you'd think they would, and that remained consistent. It totally rides on nostalgia, and the fact most of us saw it at a young age when the show was new.
