You might be surprised by just how many times The Twilight Zone did it first. From shows like “The Good Place” to films like “Us,” the impact of Rod Serling’s creation can be heavily felt. Considering that the series aired all the way back in 1958, it makes sense that so many modern artists have looked to it for inspiration. WatchMojo ranks the times The Twilight Zone did it first. Are there any other movies or shows that remind you of The Twilight Zone? Let us know in the comments!

Ever seen his show Night Gallery? In an episode he predicted a safer alternative to cigarettes as well as personal use of GPS. Often joke about the weird, tripped-out music that was supposed to be 1989 (episode from 1971) and say like "yeah, hair metal seems alright now"

Back in the '80's when I was a teenager and could stay awake for both Twilight Zone & Alfred Presents, I greatly appreciated those shows, and still do, a lot more than Seinfeld, Alf, The Simpsons & whatever else. @SuperSylar
@SuperSylar 5 жыл бұрын
Ripped off = copy+paste (predictable ending) Influenced = general ideia/concept is the same, but the story is totally different (uncertain ending) On influenced part we can identify some storylines already used more than once (it was all a dream, they were dead the whole time, the person was on a coma, it was on their mind, etc) but if one can say whats going to happen from beginning to the end then its most likely a rip off, if not outright plagiarism. On Simpsons case, they are just parodies which is a whole different category.

I totally agree. Big difference between ripping off and perhaps being inspired or influenced. Some may have just had an idea that was similar to a Twilight Zone episode in some way, even if they may have never even seen the episode. This list is not blatant ripoffs. The #1 Simpsons was more tributes and parodies, not a "ripoff".

At least 3 of the entries you said that Twilight Zone did first were in fact inspired by even earlier works. The episode 22 and the Talking Tina episode were both inspired by stories from a movie from 1945 called Dead of Night.

The Treehouse of Horror episodes are an homage or a tribute to the Twilight Zone counterparts, they don't necessarily take the idea of the episodes, but rather take the iconic images of those episode and create a new plot around it. There is something creepy about the origins of "TheHitchhiker." The writer was driving Pulaski Skyway in New York and passed a very odd Hobo looking man hitch hiking. About a half hour later he saw the same man by the side of the road still hitching. He did not appear again though after this second sighting, though it did give him the idea for the story.

I would have to say influenced by The Twilight Zone. Rod Serling was one of the great Sci-Fi writers of our days. And I can see influenced. It's the same thing with Sheldon Leonard being the influence of one of the creators of the Big Bang Theory. He liked the actor, director, producer and agent so much that SL influenced him in certain ideas in the episodes and even the name of the two leads, Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter.

Slightly off topic but there used to be a show, in the '80s, called "Amazing Stories" that got ripped off a couple of times as well. Once by the movie "Beetlejuice" and once by Stephen King when he wrote "The Green Mile". The "Beetlejuice" one is very similar indeed (a couple dies, another couple moves into their house and they try to scare them away, the point of difference is there isn't really a bio-exorcist and the offending couple are a porn producer and his bimbo wife). The major differences in the "Green Mile" story are I don't think the inmate was on death row (although it's been a while and I'm not sure about that) and was played by Patrick Swayze.

I wouldn't call it ripped off, but if so The Twilight Zone took a fair number of shows from radio anthology shows. Rod Sterling actually won a contest to do with one of these show, I believe 'Light's Out', and his script was made into an episode of the show.

Final Destination didn't ripoff Twilight Zone- the actual crash in that movie was based on TWA Flight 800 (A 747 from JFK To Paris, with a bunch of high schoolers onboard). The parts in FD and Twenty Two about getting a premonition and avoiding death as a result are based on the old Coachman's Warning urban legend

And that, friends, is evidence of The (original) Twilight Zone's timeless impact, for Serling and his other writers said as much if not more in far less time than each "inspired" feature film could. (Trivia bonus: Final Destination was first pitched to The X-Files as a "spec" script.)

I noticed that the episode The Chaser and Tales From The Crypt episode Loved To Death are very similar in the plot. Both feature young men who are infatuated with young women who don't feel the same way. Both young men buy a love potion for their unrequited loves. Both give their women the potion. The potion is so strong that the young men resolve to kill the young women with poison. The only difference is the ending. In The Chaser Roger tries to give Leila the poison but she announces that she's pregnant. Therefore he drops the glass. In Loved To Death Edward tried to poison Miranda but she switched glasses and he ended up poisoned himself! Then Miranda jumps out the window to her death! Then Edward and Miranda spend eternity together!
