Though does little for your mood if UR also getting depressed. The surgeon told me this operation is the Gold Standard for spine fusion. I am 4 weeks Post Op for a Laminectomy with Titanium Disc replacement, Fusion of L4 L5. Three night stay in hospital, immediately after surgery my excruciating right leg pain and numbness was gone! The “clean up” was long overdue. The hospital follow orders to give me a lot of pain meds. They made me sick, all of them. The staples on the bone graft hurt the worst. The surgical sight had 20 staples, they drove me nuts for two weeks, surgeon removed them, and now I can sleep. I take three Tylenol at night, that’s it. I do not bend, twist olift anything more then a plate. I have a stem cell bone graft over the hardware that will take a full twelve months to fuse. I struggle with all the precautions, but I stay very focused on a good outcome. I am thin, never smoked and I am use to being extremely active. I am learning patience, my only help is a heaven send, my 20 year old son who does everything I can’t. I can shower, brush teeth, get dressed, take four short walks a day and I have a comfortable brace I only wear when I’m up. I go back to work in two weeks, along with physical therapy after work. I believe in three months the fusion will began to form, but it will be worth all the precautions to get my life back by October 2023. My advice for anyone, after you’ve done all the pain management crap and still no long term relief, don’t wait too long, get three surgeon consults…let that simmer. Trust your gut on the surgeon who is not pushy about surgery. I feel confident with my decisions, and I suffered years of pain that I no longer have! My back was broken.

@@SigmunFreud Yes 👍 We’ve come a long ways, the healthier one is will determine the length of recovery. I have what looks like a lot of hardware, but it’s four screws, a bullet, all titanium and the fusion has grown in now. I am now 14 months post op, fully recovered. I run, walk and work on peoples bodies all day while on my feet. A good recovery I believe comes from being careful for the first three months. Allowing the body time for it all to come together, walking is very good for recovery. Blood flow, very important….motion is lotion for these joints.

@@lobstermania4025 We’ve come a long ways with these surgeries!!! I’m doing fantastic, being pain free has been the greatest blessing ever! I can run, walk, ride horses again. I turned down the pain meds after surgery, a good CBD oil from Colorado for any inflammation. Nerves have to reconnect, so for a few months I realized how important daily walks and exercise is to help nerves reconnect, THAT part was never mentioned to me. I overcame nerve pain with movement, lots of walking. I work full time on people’s body and sit for long periods of time, so keep moving! You’ll do great, and be so thankful to be out of pain ❤️

2 years ago I had a laminectomy for a herniated disc. I wasn’t able to prepare for surgery beforehand. When I was 30 I had a herniated disc which caused me great sciatic pain in my right leg. It took me a little over a year to get better. I got a few spinal cortisone injections and stayed off my feet for 2 weeks. This all happened when I was pregnant with my 3rd child, so afterward is when I got treatment. Fast forward 30 years I started getting sciatica in my left leg. It was off and on for a year, then it got worse for about 8 weeks when I had to use a walker to get around. When I sat it felt like rocks rubbing together in my butt when I sat down, but I got relief when I lied down. One morning it sat on the toilet and could barely get up. I ended up on the floor in the most excruciating pain, like I felt like dying with every inch I tried to move. Ultimately we had to call an ambulance to take me to the hospital. From there I had emergency surgery the next day and it was a godsend. Now for the past 9 months or so I’ve had pain in my right thigh and sometimes in the calf. Some weakness in that leg when lifting to go up a step. Pain when trying to sleep. Ugh.

This is the problem with us. If try to skip surgery when asked for the first time, we either change the doctor or go for epidural injections or steroid injections. These things only suppress our pain not the problem so when we reach at worse level, so happens with us.

Anyone getting a spinal fusion surgery, i truly hope you dont go through what i have. The pain is excruciating due to little pain management. I had L5-S1 along with a laminectomy. Had so much arthritis from 3 fractured vertebrae. I was given 10 mg percocet every 4 hours in the hospital despite me telling them how bad it was.Thats it. I never thought i would be in a hospital and have to suffer. Sent home with 20 hydrocodone 7.5 mg, 20 valium, 60 baclofen. I do take hydrocodone 10mg 3 times a day prior to surgery and it doesnt even touch the pain. Can barely walk. Considered going to ER several times. Im 4 days out. Make sure your doctor is going to take pain serious. Mine didnt.

Sitting and being inactive seems to make things worse. Lots of folks on the spine surgery forums report that they see significant improvement at 3 months and by 6 months are able to return to most normal activities.A complete recovery can take a year. I guess the lesson is to not get discouraged if your recovery is slower than others. Everyone is different and older folks and those with multiple level surgery will heal slower.Good luck.

I was on chronic pain medication pre-op and ended up in cardiac arrest post op even after warning the nurse I thought it was going to o happen. I’m lucky she at least listened to me and put me on telemetry (I’m an RN). But I ended up with ptsd post op and now I’m freaking out going in for this surgery. I’m dropping my pain medication to about 60mg equivalents before this surgery. I’m in physical therapy and trying to build my core. I can’t get my aerobic activity up a]enough to lose any substantial weight but I’m hoping post op I can get it off. I’m about 50lbs overweight, and having axial Spondyloarthritis and osteoarthritis.

Hello Dr. Asdourian, I had none-invasive lumbar surgery for herniated disc of L4 and L5 on September 30, 2024, and seven weeks onward I am still experiencing residual pain down my right leg, including buttocks, calf, and feet. Numbness on my right foot. My surgeon stated that my discs were "severely" herniated. Is this residual pain normal and will it eventually go away? I have a follow up MRI on December 3, and I will be starting therapy soon although I've been doing various recommended stretches. Your input having gone through this would be greatly appreciated. If leg nerves were injured prior to surgery, does it take time for them to heal? Thank you for your video. Javier

I wouldn’t get this done but my nerve pain started in February of this year. Honestly it’s more than I can take. Feels like snake bites then the tingling feeling plus the numbness all the way from my neck to my left shoulder then all the way to my fingertips. This is the main reason I’m getting surgery! I can’t keep living with the pain. I just hope and pray my Neurosurgeon can fix this problem. Let me know how your surgery went.

How long should you feel pain? All sciatic pain was gone immediately after surgery. A week later off all pain meds including Tylenol, but at 4 months when I bend even an inch or 2 forward it kills? Are my bones not fusing? Dr. Mentioned subsidence? Also said at 3 months bones don't look like they are fusing? How long can it take. What can I do other than walk and sit or lay in bed. Anytime I try and do anything like carry milk up stairs or stand up and straighten my back it kills. Surgeon said he was surprised given I was so far ahead right after surgery but now, I feel like I am still at week 2 or 3 and not improving. Basic PT did more harm than good. Any thoughts. Never drank or smoked no diabetes? taking vitamin D and drinking tons of Milk and lost about 10 pounds. Thanks for any advice.

@@davidlindgren7605 I was going to ask my neuro about that at the 6 month checkup. He said he was going to schedule a CT Scan because he couldn't really tell much from the xray at 4 months. He told me to stop all PT except for walking and I have stuck to that. Even today getting up from a chair as my back straightens I feel a sharp pain but once my back is straight the pain is gone. Pain also comes anytime my back bends forward even an inch a shock of pain that I have to fight for a couple of seconds or put my hands on my thighs to get up from. It seems like it is getting slightly better but not much better than I was at 2 or 3 weeks post surgery. I am just racking my brain on what it could possibly be? Could hardware be touching on a nerve? Could it be the space digging into my spine? Could it be that I am not fused? At my 4 months visit my surgeon asked was it like this before surgery? I sort of couldn't believe he said that... before my back got bad I was doing Brazilian jiujitsu 3 or 4 days a week, working out with weights 3 days a week.

KB Adams my mom had an minimally invasive L4 and L5 spine fusion. Doctor said she’d be walking within 2 days and back to almost normal after 6 weeks. Well it’s been 4 months and she’s in so much pain. Can’t stand or sit up for too long. 10 mins max. Today was her 4th month follow up. She’s fusing but the pain is unexplainable. Doc shattered all her hopes saying you wont ever be normal. So wtf was the point of the surgery if not manage the pain. Best of luck. Keep us posted. My only recommendation is to get a second opinion. And you’re right if we were celebs... well there wouldn’t be any pain to discuss. 🙏🏽

@@meshisha77 I go back for 6 month checkup on the 14th of October. I am hoping they have some answers. I still have the same pain I had at week 3 when my back bends at all or I twist. I should be getting a CT Scan to see if my bones have fused, if that looks good I am going to ask what it could be and ask for an MRI. I hope they give me some answers and maybe it can help your mom. If they give me no answers I am going to search the US for a better surgeon that is confident in what my issue might be. I will let you know what they say and hope your mom, gradually gets better and has less pain. Is she able to walk. Is she having nerve pain down the legs or just in her back. I have to wonder if the hardware they put in is touching a nerve or something. I say its time for a 2nd opinion. Good luck.

I recently had the passing thought that "I wish my Dr. that performed this surgery realized what it feels like after it" after he yanked my PC along with my breakfast out from under me and told me to "come over here and eat while sitting down" (with absolutely no prior interaction with him). I do not wish an L4/L5 fusion on anybody, just the compassion and empathy of realizing that the morning after surgery may not be the best time to throw a mini tantrum over breakfast while my nerves were still quite excited and damaged from the operation and months preceding the surgery, as well as risking damage to my personal property. He is a great surgeon, but I hope if I ever have another surgery it is performed by someone like you who has dealt with it, however major or (hopefully) minor.

My daughter had a Posterior decompression and Spinal fusion surgery L5-S1 for pars fracture (Grade 1lytic spondylolisthesis ) 8 months ago. Then first 2 months she was fine. But from then on her back pain and leg pain started again. Last month, the doctor re-examined her, ordered for x ray, MRI and said that there was nothing wrong with the operation. But despite the passage of eight months, her pain is not diminishing. The doctor advised her to cycle , dance, swim, lift weights and she has to do Surya Namaskar exercise 50 times a day. The doctor told that If these are followed, the pain will decrease, otherwise it will not decrease. But she is not going to be able to do these things because she is suffering so much for back and leg pain all day long. She is not able to stand and sit for long time. Is it permissible to cycling, dancing, weightlifting, jumping, swimming and 12 steps of surya namaskar everyday after 8 months of spinal fusion and decompression of child? She has severe pain till now although all X Ray and MRI reports are ok. I would be benefited if someone gave me advice in this situation.

Hi. The OLIF is classed as minimally invasive. Though this might still interfere with your gut during the process! If UR having a spinal fixation device inserted then this might help you a lot. So long as you do not have any spinal instability issues such as 'Spondylolisthesis, ? These devices are still new and under correction! I hope this can sort you out. The Army are normally quite good at being patient to get their guys fixed however long it takes. Good luck with this. PS. Went through similar in my Police training at Hendon. Though managed to show a basic level of mobility after 9 weeks and got my posting. Though sadly, now am 58 yrs my spine is folding big time! Awaiting fusion!

I'm looking for more detail of what to prepare for during the recovery. Anyone willing to give in-depth details? Does anybody else have EDS/ Ehlers Danlos Syndrome? (I've struggled consistently with sensitivity to anesthesia and synthetic drugs.) Thankfully I have avoided surgery for 30 years, but moved from high doses of ibuprofen daily for pain which shut down my kidneys 30 years ago to plant-based and natural therapies including wonderful essential oils that I delved into for their chemical constituents, much like how medications are chosen. My Mr Wonderful hubby has faithfully layered specific essential oils on my feet, legs and back which got me through this pandemic while doctors were determining If it was only my left hip labral tear or if it was also my L4-L5 and L5-S1, also. In 11 days I'll be having a decompression, L4-L5 fusion surgery but have been told by my lifelong chiropractors that my MRI confirmed their experiences that the L5-S1 is the issue too. So, 🤔 🙏 that gets minimized from stabilizing this piece first.

Don't be scared! I just had this surgery 3 weeks ago and it is finally getting better!!! The 1st 2 weeks are pretty bad, but once you get through the 2 weeks, it gets a bit better everyday! And I'm a big baby even though I'm 73 yrs old!! They found a cyst in there as I was having regular surgery on my disc's. Good luck. Be brave!

I'm 20 year old and had a herniated disc. Its been over a year since surgery and I'm in even worse pain than ever, can't work, can sleep well, can't drive alot, can't hang out with friends nearly as much, cant please my girlfriend and every doctor I've been to has done nothing to help me. I've expended all resources and now it's just pills and pt. Month after month of no improvement. The only way I see this ending is with suicide. I don't know what to do anymore or where to go. I'm in a constant state of suffering now.

I definitely am afraid of that. I’m 30. Had surgery 2 years ago. Was doing perfect. 100% better. Then 3 months ago the pain came back 10x worse. No new herniation. Nobody has any explanation other than nerve damage . Now I’m thinking of quitting my job because I work in the operating room and can barely get through the day. It’s affecting my bladder and bowels. I can’t remember what it was like to feel normal, it effects every part of my life because m6 legs are on fire all the time. Been needing to take massive doses of gabapentin, going for dry needling,PT. But I worry about getting older now and how it’s going to be so hard.

@@sak08002 hello. I'm very sorry about that. I'm still not doing any better. Constant pain and depression every day. I know what u mean when its like u can't remember what it's like to be normal again. I probably never will and it kills me.

@@michaelflake3730 I’m really sorry. Have you tried the gabapentin or lyrica? At first it wasn’t working for me. Then it made me too tired. Then I got used to it And if I take a high enough dose I can get through the day without wanted to give up on life 24/7. It took a month to start helping. The oral steroids have helped a little at times too. But I know once that nerve is damaged, things can get unpredictable. It’s also upsetting when it seems like nobody understands.

Dude I hope you are better now, that's no way to feel at 20 years old. Stay strong 💪. Look for the light at the end of the tunnel.

I’m not even joking, but after spine surgery for scoliosis (basically throughout my whole back) I became 6’2 or 6’2.5, 3 months later it literally seems I’m down to 6’1.5, why am I getting shorter after surgery??
