It wasn't exactly a plot twist, though. They reference the events of Gen 1 repeatedly throughout the game, like, every time you deal with Team Rocket or any repeat characters. Hell, you have to fight Blue for the Earth Badge WAY before you get to face Red on Mt. Silver.

***** To be fair, the song was used three times: Homestuck, the Halloween hack, and Undertale. That's a pretty wide net to throw, and in context the moment it encapsulates in Undertale specifically is really strong, and the song itself isn't bad. It is frustrating, though; even as a fan of the song and the Undertale games, I think we're overdoing it a bit and cheapening the experience. Hell, what made it so great initially was that it was an unexpected curbstomp and a meta experience, why spoil the magic by revealing the secret?

Man, people talk hella shit about Undertale but god damn that game has some phenomenal songs. Also a fantastic story and innovative combat system and creativity out the wazoo... Damn. When the fuck did I start loving Undertale? I used to also talk hella shit about it, but I think it's just the fanbase that turns people off from it. It's like Death Note, right? The thing itself is actually pretty damn good but the fans can be such cancer it ruins it for everyone else

Nailed it. What I tell people now is to just not tell anyone you're going to play Undertale, and just to go play it by yourself without any expectations other than having a couple of hours of good music and a neat combat system. It's worth the price of admission for a sort of bullet-hell-lite game. If you get more out of it than that, great! Just don't let the rabid fans get to you either way. It's just a quirky little indie game in the end.
