I almost bought a Harley back in 2004 when they had the XR1200 available new. I liked the low maintenance of it, the belt drive, the hydraulic lifters and the seating position. I didn't buy it because of the puny little 2.5 gallon gas tank. I had a 93 mile commute at the time and ended up buying a Suzuki Vstrom 650, with its 5.8 gallon gas tank. That to me was worth putting up with spraying off the chain every time I got to work, the $400 valve adjustments (they have to take the cam off to adjust the valve clearance). It was comfortable, I put 87,000 miles on it in less than 5 years. My commute involved crossing the San Andreas Fault twice a day and also the area in the North part of the San Fernando Valley where the three major freeways blend in and out of each other, and so many earthquakes have closed over the years. The Suzuki's huge gas tank would have allowed me to right out to San Bernardino to ride up over the interstate 15 to get north of the faults and make my way home through the Antelope Valley, an extra 100+ miles, without needing to stop for gas on the way. Nowadays I don't want either bike. I'm retired, live 3 to 5 blocks from all the shopping where I live and I want a 250 to 400 cc comfy bike to run around town on. I still want good brakes and handling though and low maintenance. Belt drive would be good, hydraulic valve adjusters like in the Honda Nighthawks of the early 80s, that would be my current ideal bike.

Next we should get a best bang for buck list. Like for only a little over $1k more than a Tenere 700 you can get a Tuareg 660 with tons of tech and more power/better suspension. Sometimes they can be even cheaper

I actually do appreciate Yammie going and kinda giving a kudos to the standard Street Glides and Road Glides, which in my opinion, are much better value. Personally, what I've seen is the people who buy CVOs are often those who don't ride that much but have the cash. Think of a first time rider buying a Ducati V4R SP2 as their first bike. But will only ride 500 miles a year. Those who get the standard tourings ride them things fucking daily.

Buying one overpriced bike prevents you from buying like 10 cheaper bikes- I did that and my garage space is now clogged ;)
@dacarguru79838 ай бұрын
For the first time ever, I’ve agreed with Yam’s whole list. I’ve cross-shopped and test ridden more than half the bikes on this list, and even started off on a Honda CBR500R. The Thruxton RS is one im trying to buy but they just won’t come down In price, still a dream bike of mine. But yes, these are all overpriced bikes, even if a lot of them ride amazing (Thruxton, BMW R18 to name a few).

There’s a lot of truth about the Harley memes but you can pick up a real good used road king for a great price and they feel so good on the road when it comes to cruiser bikes. I thought I loved my dyna but after putting a bunch of miles on my dad’s road king I’m rethinking my whole life.

Maybe Triumph has a Speed Twin R in the works for next year? It would make sense to just rebadge the Thruxton as one, and ditch the stupid tank and seat layout. I think at around $15k it would sell decent numbers. Speed shifter and cruise control with tubeless wheels.
@tazzalory8 ай бұрын
For me, since there is no Cruise control and Quick shift as standard on a 15k motorbike (and you can't mount it even afterwards) it's absurd

German here. The Thruxton rs is fascinating. I have one. I don't know anyone who thinks the Truxton was a bad purchase. A lot of emotion also comes across when driving. She tries to make up for the high price by making it rare on the streets. This also creates emotions. Manufacturing in a low-wage country speaks against this. The existence of a BMW M 1000 RR also speaks against this. Honestly, my reflexes are no longer good enough for this Bavarian hand grenade in German traffic.

I am not a huge fan of Harley's but you'll be surprised at how well the CVO's hold their value. They're a limited run set of bikes and come with a lot more extras compared to the standard models than you're giving it credit for. I've been a Ducati guy most my life and even the CVO's are out of my reach.

god came to me and told me to buy a CVO Harley. I explained that i didn't have the money and he said " well your going to hell then. sadden that night while watching tv a preach came on and said if i would plant a thousand dollar seed my financial situation would improve. I called the number on the tv and explained I didn't have a thousand dollars for the seed but could i send in like ten bucks and instead of making me rich just pray for enough for the cvo as god told me I'd need one to get into heaven. the said " good luck in hell "and hung up. I think Kenneth Copeland might be able to help as he got his congregation to buy him four jets. wish me well , don't want to go to hell.

I'll pay a high price for less specs if it brings enjoyment. I actually traded in my 22 speed triple rs for a thruxton rs last year and I'm having way more fun on my thruxton. The thruxton is also ridiculously good looking. I even purchased my speed triple brand new for 14.5k and i still think the 17k for the thruxton was worth it. Such a shame its being discontinued.

Last year I bought a 23 Hayabusa. It was a bucket list bike for a long time rider (I’m almost 60). Yes, overpriced, probably. For me, worth it. I just love the way it makes me feel. If I use only 25% of its potential it’s job well done. The Hayabusa is still better than ANY Harley!!!!!

I'm not into transalp bikes with an 80/20 onroad offroad bias. However, if I did want a reliable perfectly reasonable for myself and 99% of ADV riders and 100% reliable bike that lasts 300,000 miles and doesn't cost more in tow bills than tires... Add a cruise control for $200-$600 depending on what company you go with. Its not a big deal to add aftermarket cruise controls they're electronic and work well and we add other black boxes to our bikes don't we??? My 2009 Smart Car has had an aftermarket black box cruise control its whole life. The factory never made the option. The transalp can also have an electronic speed adaptive and in every way OEM feeling looking acting cruise control too in 2024 for just $500, if you install the aftermarket option. Not a throttle boss, not a throttle CLAMP, Yes, almost all drive by wire bikes can have electronic OEM quality cruise control installed no problem by aftermarket options. Welll they don't make one for MY drive by wire bike!!!! Well, do what all the rich guys did and make one then sell it. Hire a guy to make you a toy, signing away all of his intellectual property and children's futures to you, yes you the guy that wants a button on his bike who doesn't care if he body donors over the handlebars tomorrow on his kids, and sell the crap out of them cruise control buttons made by chinese children in what I hear is improved conditions these days.

The biggest rip..??… by far is the a Stark Varq …now that true reviews are being posted, not softball reviews…yes you Mr Martin…racers are finding out how dangerous this novelty truly is… as in going in limp mode on the face of a double, or a whoop section… or how the racer spends more time on staring at the battery level, or the fact that racers install horns or bells to warn fellow racers that they are being over taken…. Ah yes the Stark Farce, the best way to blow $14k on a short lived novelty…

I'm kinda tired of hearing people compare Triumphs and the W800 to Royal Enfields and saying you should just get a RE if you want a retro bike. I don't know if RE is paying for influencer hype or what but I've test ridden 3 of them now and all of them were pieces of junk. Yeah they look cool, but the second you sit on one you can tell it's just a third world motorcycle built out of alibaba parts with some nice lipstick slapped on it. I haven't had the experience of a new motorcycle dying while idling in traffic in a long time, but with the REs I test rode it happened several times. The fit and finish is just nowhere near that of a Bonneville or the W800. You can still certainly argue that a lot of retro bikes are overpriced but don't pretend like the extra few thousand you pay over a RE is meaningless, Triumphs and especially Kawis are leagues above RE in quality control.
