To clarify, Sanford & Apopka are not suburbs of Orlando. They are independent cities.

Using my wife's account because I almost never make any online comments. I was a cop in Orlando in the 90's, in District 36, which was basically the Mercy Drive area. I also worked Paramore (which is a short street), and Ivey (though part of that is in the county). I was a wild man during those times, after working federal drug interdiction (narco trafficking in the Carib, Mexico, Central and South Am. with U.S. Customs and DEA). I can tell you that I got my regular adrenaline fix on the evening and midnight shifts in W. Orlando. You could go south on Paramore from W. Colonial, and turn west on Livingston, and you were guaranteed to get hit with a barrage of rocks, bottles, and occasional gunfire (it was automatic), prompting a county-wide response from OPD, Orange County S.O., FHP, and other LEO's. Ivey was probably the worst, where the average crack dealer (on every other corner) only lived about 2 weeks. There was also a housing project called "The Palms" on Mercy (torn down later I believe). That place was unreal. Lots of crim'in, and automatic rifle fire on party nights. But don't say the cops didn't go somewhere, because the west side cops didn't hesitate to get in the shit. After I left OPD (adrenaline junkie turned expecting father), I saw a story on the news about a female OPD officer that took over my district sometime later who was shot to death. You left out 2 important places though: 1) Church Street Station was a touristy area with bars, restaurants, etc. immediately east of the I-4 overpass, but one bad area of the hood was immediately west of I-4, so tourists would go the wrong way and get robbed, stabbed, shot, etc.; and 2) S. Orange Blossom Trail (OBT). I still remember all the unsuspecting tourists that would use travelocity or some other online travel site to book a hotel and wound up on W. Colonial or OBT, and got robbed, stabbed, shot, etc. If anyone is actually thinking about moving to Orlando, stay in the NE or buy lots of guns and ammo.

I used to deliver prepared snacks for various Head Start facilities in MCO 20 years ago to ALL the hoods mentioned in your video. The one that stood out the most was Mercy Drive at The Palms. The Head Start facility consisted of two portable buildings inside a quadrangle which was surrounded by a barbed wire fence. Looked like a perfect preparation for the school -to-prison pipeline.

Omg, thank goodness for this. We have been in Orlando for a week and spending our time driving looking for Homes for sale. priority is a safe neighborhood. So far no luck as it seems our budget is not high enough for a “nicer” hood. We've been to some places you've mentioned today. I hope you will cover and blog the “safer” areas ( & suburbs) that are not so pricey.

I noticed that Orlando has a lack of city planning. There are expensive communities that are built adjacent to squalor; we refer to this as the "cabbage patch " city design. The streets followed the homes until someone had the good sense to do it the other way around. They think that they solve the problem by gating the communities but that is bandage on the problem. The politicians have no interest in urban planning. I've seen million dollar homes that face the "Archie Bunker " row houses because even with gated communities there is a limit on fence and hedge height.

@@kingkol Well, it is if you find work that can afford it. I lived there most of my life. Lots to do, beach roughly same distance either way. The car scene is real. Legit love for custom rides from 50's night to burnout contests. Legit racing and drifting. Also, the less than legal but still safe-ish stuff too. It gets stupid hot in central Fl. And I have also seen ice on a pond like 4 times in 30 years. Most of Orland has a defensive pride for it being clean. And for the most part it is. Just some old, but not old enough to regentrify areas.

Nice vid, got a few laughs out of me. I'd definitely suggest Holden Heights which encompasses OBT around I-4 and just south of it. Pine Hills is big, I'd say the northern edges of it are decent - obviously way north of Silver Star. Haven't been up that way in a long time though. I forget the neighborhood name but 436 near 408 might be of note too. I think it would be a white person's worst nightmare to get lost and end up in one of these parts of town. Especially after sundown. I don't think I'm being racist I'm just being fear Factor. 😬

I went to vacation in Orlando not too long ago... we saw a dead dude on the street, and this was OUTSIDE downtown Orlando. I'm sure he died from an overdose! (It was in a rough neighborhood, too)

I loved this video! This is my City… and the 1 thing I ALWAYS hear from ALL my friends and family that come visit from out of state is how different Orlando is from what u think it is because of how Orlando is marketed or sold. People see the theme parks and the fancy destination resorts and forget that all that flashiness is all inclusive. Meaning if your not staying in the Disney, Universal or timeshare resorts ur NOT GONNA EXPERIENCE ANY OF THAT. people don’t realize how much power Disney has… they have so much power that they control what news comes out of Orlando in efforts to not shine a spotlight on the reality that this is a growing metropolis with A LOT OF LOW INCOME EMPLOYMENT AND HIGH LIVING COST. UNFORTUNATELY UNLESS U HAVE A JOB THAT PAYS 150,000 or more you will either live in the hood or live in a nice area with about 10 roommates. Orlando is nice and beautiful BUT ITS NOT THE SAFESTCITY BY FAR. BUT ITS AN AMAZING CITY TO GROW UP IN!

Thing is, he calls the locals idiots but names places that literally are not neighborhoods or in city limits. So as a local I'll give you a top 10 "Sketchy" areas in the Orlando Metro area. 1. Downtown Orlando. At night it can all be kind of eerie with shifty homeless people and aggressive drunks. 2. OBT. The whole road stretches for miles North and South through several areas. The southern part being the worst. Just be watchful. 3. The numbered streets/Rio Grande. There are very few numbered streets in Orlando. They aren't all bad but they can all be very scary during evening night hours. All of them. 4. Pine Hills/Crime Hills. Has some good parts and bad parts. 5. South Semoran Blvd. Another road that stretches through several areas. Just one of those places that is hit or miss in certain apartment complexes and shopping centers. 6. Texas Ave/Americana/Holden. This is an area OBT stretches through but there are several communities all neighboring each other that have issues and can be a bit rough in parts. 7. Rosemont/North Lane. OBT goes this way as well. Can be downright nerve-wracking at night. But has some beautiful areas deeper within as well. 8. Kissimmee/192 East. West 192 is fine. East 192 in deeper parts of Kissimmee is definitely not fun. Day or night lol. 9. Ivey Lane/Carver Shores/Lake Mann. Is generally an area that is actually in city limits of Orlando. Mostly black people but there are some parts of these areas with nice homes and no crime at all. Overall area gets a bad rep being a tad ghetto and good in some stretches. 10. South Apopka. They really do try and make Apopka nice and it is. But South Apopka has a reputation. Avoid this area if possible for now.

By law, we are NOT ALLOWED to mention bad areas. It’ll violate the Federal Fair Housing Act. It’s called redlining. It is considered a discriminatory practice. But we suggest to do homework and see the area yourself.

Parramore is so much more and has a rich history. Grew up there and graduated from Jones High School. The crack epidemic hit it hard in the 80s after it was also suffering from systemic racism, but once upon a time it was a bustling black neighborhood with black doctors, lawyers, teachers, ect. The Wellsbuilt hotel (now a museum) is in Parramore and everyone from MLK, Thurgood Marshall to Jackie Robinson stayed there during Jim Crow when they couldn’t stay at the whites only hotels downtown. Anyway, I get the point of your video, but Parramore has produced great people and your right, opportunities can change everything.

Born in Orlando in 1955, but my hometown doesn’t exist anymore. Too many people in too little space. With a burgeoning population, no surprise that crime has gone off the charts. It will continue to get worse. The local politicians equate population growth with success, quantity is not the same as quality.
