The problem with many US neighborhoods is that the people are poor, rent, and have no owners pride. The property owners only collect a small rent and never fix anything. Once the front lawns, shrubs, and plumbing go, they are no longer attractive to investors. My mother had neighbors who used the toilet bowl to wash clothes because the sinks did not have running water. There was no bath or shower either. They drank from the outdoor hose!

When we got close to the city did the freakin gps take us across that nice big bridge near the Arch? NO, it routed us through the east side and us, in all our ignorance went right along. We didn't realize our mistake until we were sitting at a traffic light in the heart of the east side and were staring straight at a group of dudes standing on a corner that were very color coordinated fashion wise. Every drive in detroit shows what you guys are saying is true. I love michigan, and even the city of detroit, but one street can make the difference between a third world gang territory and the nice kept up areas. Its really a shame but the number of people we have here isnt high enough for anyone to help us or care, like in the big cities

It all comes down to opportunity. Detroit was a bustling city when there were still a ton of manufacturing jobs to be had. Areas don't usually become shitty for no reason. It annoys me when people just generalize and say "why don't these people get jobs?" What jobs?
@metalmonk3775
@metalmonk3775 3 жыл бұрын
@@willvr4 fully agreed, the lack of jobs is significant. But in all honesty there are many solutions that would help, its just that we dont have anyone who wants to help us. @@willvr4 a lot of it is fear and complacency to be fair. When I see these people, I don't think "Why don't these people get jobs" I think "Why don't they just go somewhere else?". A greyhound ticket to somewhere better is maybe $100 tops unless you are trying to move to a different state entirely for some reason or somewhere really far away. There are homeless shelters most places, and day labor jobs you can get even while homeless. I used to work at walmart and there was homeless man that worked there that made just a tad more than me. I made $13 per hour. Safe to say he was making about a grand every two weeks, and a decent apartment is under $600 a month here. Utilities can be easily kept under $200 a month. So if you make $2,000 a month, subtract 15% for tax so you have $1768. Subtract $600 for rent, $200 for utilities, let's go big ballin' and say $400 for food, well that still leaves you $568 to play with for getting whatever else you think you need or want. Every month. He was homeless by choice through his own admission. You don't have to be. You could have your own apartment, be well fed, have clothes, internet, a phone, whatever. Save up $1200 and you can get an old beater car to get you to work and back. This is all possible in most small to mid-sized towns in the US. Just get on a bus and go.

Every time they talk about detroit, they only show you the abandoned Packer plant, which is the root cause of the issues in that neighborhood. So billionaires are at the root of the problem, the Packer auto plant closed in 1956, and every year someone says they're going to buy/develop, and it's still there with more promises by billionaires to do something about it.

Most of the footage they used for East St. Louis, IL was actually of downtown St. Louis, MO. I worked in downtown STL for a decade with no issues. Don’t go north of Washington Ave and don’t walk alone south of Busch Stadium. Those rules will help you avoid 95% of issues. But once you cross the Mississippi River into East St. Louis, IL it’s like a third world country. I’ve had two different police officers advise me to just run stop lights/signs to get out ASAP. “Remind me not to go within 100 miles of East St. Louis.” See: St. Louis suburbs/Greater St. Louis area. The sprawl has been spreading westward for decades to avoid those high crime areas.

I grew up around the number 10 city, namely Rockford, in the '60s and '70s. Most of the crime is on the Westside of Rockford and is gang-related. They moved a particular element of people from Chicago into some projects they built on that side of town. Over time it got worse, starting in the late '70s to '80s when they started the mass exodus of factories to Mexico and China. By the time you got to the '90s with Clinton signing NAFTA, it shortly became a shelled-out city, and the gang and drug violence has gone through the roof.

Can confirm that Camden is not a friendly place to go (source: NJ resident and account from folks going through). Was not that long ago that it was considered the most dangerous city in America before being overtaken by Detroit. One of my teachers in High School described an incident where she was stopped at a light and a band of thugs literally walked up to her car and took the hubcaps off of it in broad daylight, with the engine running. They were so bold that they didn't care people saw them. Things have gotten better, but it's still pretty rough. Definitely a far cry from its industrial heyday. Atlantic City isn't that great either; in its worst days, it was a hotbed for gang activity, and to this day there is still drugs and mayhem in the streets at night. Funny enough... did you know that Batman's Gotham City is actually based on Atlantic City, historically and geographically? Kind of fitting.

I live in Pittsford, a suburb. You're right, as a metro area, it's not bad. The city itself, is rough. Poverty is high, as is crime and getting worse. The city school district is one of the worst in the country. However, Brighton and Pittsford are two of the best. The city needs newe leadership to clean things up.

Detroit does have a massive blight removal project. The process is more complex than you might think and has had political and corruption issues along the way. One article about it: www.google.com/amp/s/amp.detroitnews.com/amp/3349213001

Absolutely, studies show a two parent household makes a huge difference in the outcome of a child's well being and success. Doesn't mean it can't happen in single households but it is just much more unlikely based off the statistics.

What you have to understand about Detroit it wasn’t the original owners who made those areas shit. When the local economy crashed individuals lost their homes and the remaining ppl had to deal with being surrounding by vacant homes etc. they attempted to sale their homes but due to all the vacant homes around the market value crashed. So eventually the remaining residents just abandoned the homes since they couldn’t sell them and went to better areas. Then crack heads etc came into the area.

I really can't stand this guy. As someone from a really bad neighborhood who was lucky enough to make it out, his condescending tone is so frustrating. His little explanation in the intro says it all. The thing is the people who say "you're not from there you wouldn't understand" are 100% correct. He presents it in such a way as to suggest the blame is completely on the residents, who completely out of their control were born into that environment. His presented solution "just be a better neighborhood" damn dude nobody ever thought of that. We will just break the cycle of violence, educate everyone over night, repair all the broken homes, get everyone good paying jobs, ect. Like I said I made it out, I know that ultimately we are responsible for our actions, and our situations. But some of us just so happened to start waaaaaaaaaaaaaay behind the normal starting line.

Leaving aside that most of these aren't neighborhoods but are actually just high-crime blocks or streets within larger neighborhoods, towns, or cities, this is pretty well a description the large majority of gun violence and violent crime in the U.S. - small areas with high crime due to gangs, drugs, and poverty.

"America has a bunch of billionaires. Why doesn't one just flatten it all and build it up, help these people out?". A billionaire buying up all that land, and rebuilding the infrastructure, homes, and environment would do exactly the opposite. Property taxes would shoot through the roof, and all the locals would have to find the closest hood to relocate themselves. It's happened since urban planning in America began. The system is designed to rebuild areas, drive out the less fortunate, bring in new business and residents, and push the have nots further into squalor.

The reason people who get shot don't stick around is because they probably have a record for some petty drug charge and if they come in contact with police for any reason they get arrested, and thrown in jail even if they did nothing wrong once you have a record of any kind you are considered a criminal and have almost no rights

General Motors was making record profits at the time. Blight & Violent crime rises, as does spousal, drug and alcohol abuse. Just my 2 cents.

I'm amazed that nothing in Kansas City is on this list. There are several KC neighbourhoods listed on most dangerous lists on websites such as neighborhoodscout.com & forbes.com. I'm not bragging about my home town - just the opposite. I'm just saying that if any of you decide to come & visit here, be sure to avoid certain parts of town. Overall, it's not a bad place to live, but there are a few areas that are very dodgy.
