I think one of the darkest things about the Ember Island Players wasn't just Aang watching "himself" die on stage. It was watching people *applaud* his death and Zuko's. Especially for Zuko, since the auditorium was full of his own people who just weeks/months before had greeted his return with cheers.

I'm so late to this, but is no one going to talk about how Zuko's dad was going to kill him? Zuko's grandfather ordered his death as punishment for Zuko's dad, because he tried to steal the crown, and his dad was actually going to kill him. So Zuko's mom literally kills her father-in-law to keep her husband from killing her son, and is then banished from the nation so she can never see her children again. I really think that should make the wtf list...

I just realized something.. during the day of the black sun, when Zuko confronted Ozai, Ozai struck Zuko with a lightning. And it just hit me that for all Ozai knew Zuko couldn't lightningbend and he couldn't have known about the lightning deflecting technique either. So in his mind he was really going to murder his son. You can see it in his face, like delivering a final fatal blow to an enemy.

Yeah, in Ozai's mind that was supposed to be an execution. Which I might add that he stalled for time until he could do so by gloating about how he punished Zuko's mother for saving Zuko's life from his grandfather attempting to punish Ozai for being insensitive about Iroh's son's death. Think about that. He stalled for time so he could kill his son by telling him a story about how he was going to kill him before but his mother took the fall instead.

Tabbs actually I think he was 13 by it was almost the end of the series which covers about a year in their lives. I forget the name of this episode but it’s one of my favorites. I like how they made a big cushy beg out of koala sheep wool ! He was so delirious from lack of sleep he thought it was made out of clouds!

This show made me truly realize just how empathetic I am. I cried so much through this series as if the characters were real, as if the things that occurred affected me in some way. As a teenager whilst watching this, I learned patience, empathy, and discernment. Things that were not taught to me by anyone in my real life. I know this is crazy to say but this show molded me in so many ways, and a lot of the values I learned I carry with me until this day, at 25.

There are lessons in this show that I literally have to remind myself of just because I always seem to forget about them. Iroh was my mentor figure growing up and still is. I actually agree. In many ways it was a very dark moment, especially set to contrast around the rest of the episode and even the rest of that short. I mean come on. "I only wish, I could have helped you. Happy Birthday, my son" Tell me that wasn't a dark moment. One of the things that made ATLA so great was that it wasn't afraid to explore the full range of human emotion. The writers of the show were amazing story tellers. I'll admit I wasn't fond of Korra. But ATLA will always have a place among my favorite TV series, animated or otherwise

9:37 Zuko didn’t say the general’s plan wouldn’t work out, he spoke out against the general because the general wanted to use a load of fire nation troops as bait, effectively sending them to their deaths for a tactical advantage later. The scene foreshadows how honorable, yet empathetic Zuko becomes as the series progresses 💯

The darkest part for me was always Azula's breakdown. Throughout the series she obviously had some mental stuff with manipulation and so much more but was always so composed and strategic. (Her techniques to win fights were basically, seemingly perfect.) Seeing a character who was shown in the series to think so little of emotions other than fear have "her mother" tell her she loves her being the thing to break her was so impactful. The amount of detail the writers put in that would fly over most young kids heads in a KID'S SHOW baffles me to this day. I adore how the characters were thought out and had depth. I believe Azula is and will forever be one of the most amazing animated villains created for kid's channels.

When Toph and Sokka were dangling from the airship in the series finale, it is darker if you think about it. Toph couldn't sense anything besides Sokka. She couldn't tell if she would live or die and the only thing that she could tell was left was Sokka

Remember when Azula went to go recruit her friends and when Tai Lee said she was happiest staying where she was, Azula convinced/threatened her by PUTTING HER LIFE AND ALL THE CIRCUS GOERS IN MORTAL DANGER WITH FIRE AND RAMPAGING ANIMALS? Actually I feel like every moment with Azula on screen was some kind of WTF moment. I mean she broke a pretty seashell with just her fingernails on one hand before tricking her own brother into walking into his own and her uncle's arrest. How messed up is that? Even though the Southern Air Temple was a very heavy episode and I get the feels I'm always impressed by Monk Gyatso, he took quite the count. Those fire benders where buffed out on Sozin's comet and there are 20 of them dead around Gyatso; went out like a bad ass.

the one thing that really ties this together is the fact that air nomads are supposed to be peaceful and swore to nonviolence, even aang is hesitant in killing ozai, so monk gyatso taking out fire benders really shows just how desperate/afraid he was and how much was at stake at the moment

Since Ozai wanted to Firelord before Iroh he went to Ursa and had her make a poison that made it look like "Firelord Azulon died peacefully. In his sleep." (Reference to Azula there). This was also around the same time Iroh lost Lu Ten and when Ozai officially spoke out to his father about being the next Firelord. Firelord Azulon told Ozai that he needed to know the pain of losing a son. Azula heard, told Zuko, Ursa found out and then left. She ended up living a happy life but not remembering who she was before that. Sorry for the rant, just some info I had.

My WTF moment fav. is the last Agni Kai. The dimmed music, as you see a brother and sister literally fight to the death, fully intended on killing each other. As you see the calculated Azula slowly, over the course of the series culminating in this point, going mad. Losing all precision control she once had as she just throws wave after wave of fire on Zuko. The show didn't hide that it was going to end in death, even going as far as to almost kill katara before Zuko saved her, almost dying in the process. It only ended in life because of Katara. If she hadn't been there I think Zuko would still have won, but Azula would've died right there. Making his ascension to the throne, just what uncle Iroh didn't want, paved in a path of blood.

Idk if you noticed but i noticed that Avatar is a mixture of a lot of asian cultures and the name "Appa" is korean for "dad". Aang doesnt have a father and Appa was always with him, like ALWAYS. I became a fan long after the series ended. The movie had turned me off from it when my dad bought the dvd and said it was good. When I saw it was a cartoon I thought it was gonna be just like the movie. Years later my boyfriend had me watch a few eps. When we got to the Kyoshi island ep. He was surprised when I predicted Aang would put out the fires the way he did. After that he asked me what I thought and I responded with: "More please?" The relationship didn't last, but I am thankful he introduced me to this series. The entire series is AMAZING! Zuko and Toph are my most fav characters. Period. I preordered the BluRay collection on Amazon and even the case is clever. The sleeve shows the mystical avatar, but the case itself reveals Aang with his friends. It's a quiet detail, but a nice one.

I think he darkest moment for me at least, was the moment in The Southern Raiders when Katara bloodbended someone. After The Puppetmaster you'd think that she wouldn't use it on a human because then she would be like Hama (I think that's what her name was), but when she thinks she's found the person who killed her mother...she bloodbends the person, I don't know about you guys, but that was the darkest moment for me. I thought zuko and azula's battle (sozin's comet) was pretty tragic too. I mean, it was his sister, still. He was ready to kill her if needed!!! And Azula was prepared to kill Zuko as well (and she was literally losing her sanity that time) Its as bad as Ozai giving young zuko a permanent lesson on his face. And notice the background music didn't sound exciting but rather sad and bitter. Aang wasn't even keen on the idea of killing ozai, but the siblings? oh god.

I didn't notice this until the last time I watched it, but Katara's anger is just building up through the entire saga until she snaps in the 3rd Book. You can just see it building up within her if you watch it. And it gnaws at her the entire time until she stops and lets it go.

Nahhh, she started going mad a lot earlier than that! It started unfolding in The Beach when you start delving into her psyche, and then again in Escape the Boiling Rock part 2. Then she started going mad.... Her meltdown after her Agni Kai upset me so bad. She's fucking *fourteen* and she went insane. That is dark.

that's absolutely true. just think about it, Azula's mother was scared of her and wasn't able to give her as much love and affection as she gave Zuko, who was abandoned by his father, meanwhile the father loved and cherished Azula's bad behaviour. Her mom telling her to change and that she is a bad girl is what always hunted her. In fact, she had as much of a conflict going on as Zuko. Azula must have been mentally ill from the very start of her life and everything that happened was her father worsening her narcessistic behaviour leading her into a shizophrenic episode at the very end of the series. reading into the comics, you come to realize that she actually tries to kill her own mother because she is hunting her in her halluzinations. THIS IS DARK. Not this stupid made up face stealer gohst, I mean everybody actually knew this was some made up gohst bs, meanwhile suffering from severe psychotic episodes after your parents abused you is literally every memedealers misfortune!

@@anomalou Azula's Mom never abused her I mean yes it was very harsh of her when she said "What is wrong with that child?" But she always both her children equally she just thought Zuko was more vulnerable and lacked confidence and I think there were times where she tried teaching Azula to be a better person but Ozai's influence had already gotten in too deep. Towards the end when Azula was hallucinating she started crying when Ursa said she loved her so it's implied that Azula knows her mom loves her but literally has no concept of love. Pretty
