I think the best explanation is that, if we go by the show's internal logic, Yami Yugi is an Egyptian Pharaoh who grew up in a world where all these monsters and spells were real tangible things and he was taught to use them in that way, in actual warfare. His tactics in Duelist Kingdom (mostly) make sense if you assume that each card is real and interacting with the world. Launching an attack at the foundations of a fortress when all your enemies are trapped inside is actually a good tactic. From a military standpoint, he didn't lose much, and his opponents had doomed themselves by not having an escape route. Of course, because we and everyone else know it's a game with specific (if vague) rules, it's total duckbutt. Plus, I always assumed the way things worked in Duelist Kingdom was that if you could justify it happening you could do it. Or we can assume that Yami Yugi merrily heated his way through because Pegaus cheated from the beginning and might actually kill his grandfather so he considered it fair game.

That is not even how DnD works. You can get creative with the effects of magic or how your use equipment, but you can't really do much of that if you are at a convention and competitively playing (like, some times people will see who can clear a dungeon or beat a big monster the fastest at a con) then the rules tend to be pretty serious and strict. Which is a shame, because I ran some 2e and my friends thought up using Tensor's Floating Disc as an improvised shield so the Cleric wouldn't die or be obviously cheating in his duel with a knight who could not fail to one hit kill the 2 hp cleric if his sword connected. Didn't save the cleric mind you, but it was clever. If you think I was a bad GM for putting them against such a Knight, just going to say that the knight was a lawful good character and they tried to overthrow his realm, not because they thought he was a tyrant but to make money quickly, and he took their challenge to his authority super graciously by saying it was to be resolved through single combat, rather than just having them all executed on the spot by the town guards.

@TulipQ8 жыл бұрын
david savage I was referring to the competitive convention environment of game explicitly. There are people who do that. They do not fail at the game because there is no failing if you are having fun. On the beating the boss notion, that is actually fairly common to this day. Piazo and Wizards of the Coast still publish adventure books that often end in a final boss the players have to overcome and then they have won the module. Lots of people don't use these kinds of modules because they are inherently limited, but others do and in such a case there is a boss after beating which you have completed the story and get a happy ending much like a video game.

It is a major ass pull, but it does make sense since their cards are interactive with the "environment" and Pegasus said there were special rules that they'd have to learn. Moon thing, makes sense but wasn't his turn so it was bs. The Duelist Kingdom arc gets a pass since the rules were never stated and we were told that the cards would work differently. Atem may not have had his memories, but he had used those monsters before in the Shadow Games so it's possible that the normal monsters had effects back then that he knew of and could capitalize on with duels more or less free for alls. The only problem with this justification...IT WASN'T YOUR TURN YUGI!!!!! I'll let the stuff he did on his turn pass but unless he was utilizing quick effects that only he recognized because Ancient KoG Pharaoh, his cheats weren't bs moves and explanations...It was playing out of turn. Unless that was another unspoken rule but I doubt there were THAT many special rules. Seto may have his money to screw the rules, but Atem just DGAF.

Here's a new card idea Blue eyes Rot Dragon Fusion/effect/dragon 4500 atk/3800 def 1 fusion dragon monster + 1 zombie monster This card must be fusion summoned, and cannot be special summoned any other way. If this card was fusion summoned using an opponents monster as a material, it is summoned to the opponents side of the field. Once per turn during each standby phase, this monsters atk is reduced by the atk of the fusion material with the lowest atk. If this cards atk cannot be lowered to exactly 0, it's atk stays at its current atk. This monster cannot change its battle position.

Is there an episode where this was revealed?

Clarification: it doesn't change their deck, just turns odds in their favor. If you're in a bad position, your chances of getting something to get you out of it are raised, provided your deck has the means to begin with. BUT, this does still account for the Weevil scenario as he needed the initial luck to draw the cards needed to end the duel, and then draw extra to punish Weevil.

Also, saying "some cards have a different effect in the anime" is valid, what doesn't make sense is when it shows the original effect of a monster like Catapult Turtle in one episode, then some made up Bs in another. Just cause its the anime, and the rules weren't as strict as they are now, there were still rules, monsters still had effects only if they were effect monsters, along with traps and spells, and yugi is just a bit of a cheater. it's fine I guess cx

i believe the reason why he activates Lightforce Sword from his hand was because the card was originally designed as a spell card, but they realised that this was too powerful and made it a trap card, but the animation had already been done, so they changed Lightforce Sword in the anime to a trap card, but kept it's role in the episode

Okay, no. Season one (and arguably most of classic Yu-Gi-Oh) can't count. First of all, the anime is still mostly based on the manga at that point, which was created _before_ the game. Which means that, technically, it's the anime/manga that are right, and _the TCG_ which got the rules wrong! Secondly, though, the explanation is given in canon that the rules have undergone several revisions over the course of the series, which is why it starts out with the vastly more complex and realism based manga-rules of Season 1, before eventually settling into the more strict to TCG portrayals of the later series. *EDIT:* Third of all, it is important to differentiate the game in the series from the real-world game _based on_ the series, as they are clearly different games, and in more ways than just life point totals. In a lot of the matches you cite, the game is being processed by a computerized system, as well as remotely monitored by humans. Yet, all of the matches proceed, showing that in-universe what Yugi is doing is considered legal play. The VR system even has animations for things like crashing the flying castle and attacking the moon! Why is that? Well, as I hinted at above, in the manga and original episodes, Duel Monsters doesn't run on strict "card rule logic". It runs on something closer to real world rules of cause and effect. There are probably still limits, but in general Original Duel Monsters is a little closer to something like Dungeons & Dragons than it is to Magic: The Gathering. Cards do have rules, but the rules for cards are not rigidly defined. For example, how no player has an Extra Deck or fusion monster cards, so certain cards like Time Wizard and Polymerization are just able to change monsters in whatever way makes sense. So, just like how in D&D a player might not have a specific rule for a wall made of spiked blades, but could still combine a _Wall of Iron_ spell and a _Fabricate_ spell to produce one, Yugi may not have a specific card that says "Attack the castle's flight ring", but can combine a card that launches monsters with a monster skilled at aerial combat to produce that effect. In both cases, logic is applied to resolve what happens after that (probably adjudicated by some tournament official up in the control room in Yugi's case).
@michaeluhlhorn84188 жыл бұрын
You could also add stuff about the battle with Dartz. He ignored the fact that Dartz broke the "rules" according to the TCG by summoning Divine Serpent Geh by sacrificing all his life points. Then when Yugi does the combo with the two atlantean knights, he creates the summoning condition for Timaeus the Knight of Destiny, which when summoned by this way has infinite attack. And when two monsters with equal attack battle, both are destroyed. Dartz lost because the only thing keeping him in the duel was the clause that as long as Geh was alive he wouldn't lose. As Geh was destroyed but the monster that Yugi was using with the same clause wasn't Yugi won.

I have a feeling that the majority of these 'shenanigans' is you trying to use the Yu-Gi-Oh! card game rulings and card effects to call out Yugi using the original cards in Duel Monsters. Which doesn't work, because Yu-Gi-Oh! is loosely based off the card game from the Anime and Manga. While the Anime depicts the manga card game more faithfully and has different rules. Also since cards exist in the Anime/Manga first, using the real life effect to contradict is faulty, because the real life effect isn't the original, it's an altered version. In other words, it's like saying someone's cheating because they don't play Poker with the exact same rules as Black Jack.

Dude, in Atem's (not Yugi) defense, most of the rules back then didn't exist like they do now. Especially in Season 1. That was 2001, which almost 2 decades ago! The official rules weren't brought until around battle city tournament. And besides as far as I'm concerned, most the opponents you mentioned were cheating also. Arkana trimmed his cards on his first hand, which Atem was smart enough to get a hold of, so it was only fair that he should cheat back (even though he actually didn't since the cars like that actually allows the opponent to use it as said in Battle City Rules, which Kaiba himself put.). The rare hunter was a MAJOR cheater. How can you accuse Atem of cheating, when the rare hunter was cheating the entire time? First, for having more than 3 copies of Exodia, even though in Duel Monsters, you can only have 3 copies of the same monster. And even worse, the Exodia cards were marked and overall FAKE, which is illegal in Duel Monsters. Yeah Atem summoned his trap card without putting it on the field, but I don't think that compares to what the rare hunter did to cheat. As for Mako, again its Season 1. Because you can say its bullshit that Atem destroyed the moon with his monster. But then so was Mako hiding his monsters in the sea, even though thats not in the actual game or using Yugi's moon card to control the tides to his advantage. Panic was anything but fair. He wasnt playing to win, he wanted to intimidate Atem into breaking down. He literally chained his legs and kept shooting flamethrowers at him. And like with Mako, he also used his Castle of Darkness to hide his monsters. Again, not in the actual game either. And don't even get me started with Pegasus. As for the battle with Dartz, in all honesty, alot of B.S. Moments happened in Season 4. Not surprised, since all of it was filler. But still I'll give you the reason to that particular battle. And if you want accuse Yugi of being a cheater, then yes I agree with you, but not for the reasons you stated for. He's a cheater for letting the pharaoh do all the work, while he gets all the credit and the title.

Ángel Macias Hey man a title in exchange for a host organism that lets yami control him is a VERY small price to pay
@angelmacias12938 жыл бұрын
Zachary Cannaday very small price? Most of the time, Atem only takes control of Yugi's body is when he's in a duel. And that's by Yugi's own free will. And the very few times he takes over when he's not dueling are also by Yugi's choice as well. And yes, Atem also chooses to come out as well, but most of the time is when Yugi is in trouble. Look I like Yugi a lot. And I honestly thought he gained great character development by defeating Atem legitimately and maintaining his title King of Games, after the pharaoh left. But that doesn't change the fact that he cheated by letting someone else duel for him during most series and obtaining all the credit for the duels the pharaoh won. Truth be told, he wouldn't be the duelist he is today, if it had not been for Atem.
@zacharycannaday60758 жыл бұрын
Ángel Macias Yes yugi would not be the same without atem guiding him. The whole reason atem is alive is because of yugi though (not only because he built the puzzle but also because he saved him from that fire in season 2) so letting him be king of games would be a fair trade
@angelmacias12938 жыл бұрын
Zachary Cannaday completing the puzzle was part of the prophecy, because Yugi is Atem's modern reincarnation. He was destined to solve the puzzle. And he personally did it because he wanted the puzzle to grant him a wish. Yugi had no idea he was helping out free the spirit of his former self. And being the reincarnation of the pharaoh means that if Atem hadn't existed, then Yugi wouldn't have existed in his time as the person he is. But that's besides the point. And yes, Yugi is very brave and noble. That's why I like him. But if hadn't saved Atem in the fire, then he would have never been able to save the world from villains such as Marik or Bakura during Battle City. And even before that, the pharaoh had helped Yugi out plenty of times, not only him but also his friends and family, whether if it was in a duel or not. Yugi has helped Atem a lot, but Atem has repaid him by helping him back plenty of times. I'm also including Season 0 into this. So I say they're even in those aspects, that's of course, not including the fact that Yugi had gained the title King of Games through duels that the pharaoh won up until the very end.
@deflepperdrocks129543 жыл бұрын
Regarding why Yugi even had Dark Sage, you have to remember that Yugi is the one who gave Joey Time Wizard, assumedly from his own deck, so Yugi nailing a Time Roulette and powering up his Dark Magician would have been a viable strategy for him before giving Time Wizard away

It's worth pointing out that several of these "rules breaks" are going off of things that didn't really work the same way back then. For example, Time Wizard actually aging cards (including his own Baby Dragon) instead of necessarily destroying them, or the fact that many cards weren't actually, well, cards. That last bit is important. Fusion didn't work the way it does now in the real game. Fusion cards weren't even real! You didn't have separate cards to represent a fusion, you just combined the cards' traits using a system that wasn't really explained in the anime but got decent lip service in the manga. It was assumed that any cards of compatible attributes could fuse, not just ones with a pre-existing Fusion card.

except it's not? what if i brought a pair of glasses and told you nothing, we start dueling, and then halfway through the duel i go, "oh yeah, by the way, these glasses let me see the cards you have". ancient artifacts from Egypt aren't gonna suddenly invalidate the rules. in any case, season 1 had literally _no_ fucking rules. kaiba summoned his blue eyes dragons without tributes, yugi did a lot of shit from 'attacking the moon' to summoning an infinite amount of monsters. certain monsters had some added effects depending on their type, like how machine monsters were apparently immune to magic. in the end though, all i have to say to all these complaints is that it's the show. they have to make this shit work somehow. they had no actual ground rules for the card game in season 1 because they didn't need to have them because no one in real life was playing the game. it wouldn't be until a year after the anime's official release until they released the card game itself and had to give it rules. that's why cards in the anime differ from their real life counterparts. all these, "YUGI CHEATED" complaints are invalidated by the fact that there were no rules outside of, "reduce your opponent's life points to 0" in the original season. he couldn't cheat if there were no rules, and it honestly provided for some cool scenes that we would never get in future seasons due to rules being set in stone, like when yugi locked in PaniK's monsters due to Chaos Shield and took them all down with PaniK's own castle. that was the shit, and while i do prefer GX over the original series due to being able to follow everything since there are actual rules now, the original series is always a great re-watch due to all the wacky shit that happened.

If you want to talk Arc-V hacks, then look no further than Revolution Falcon. Also, he didn't create it midbattle. He had the cards, he's had them long before this battle. Zarc created Pendulums. Then Declan made more (Although he somehow didn't know the effect of the cards he created himself)

well when you think about it. the "duel monsters" the pharaoh is used to has no spells/traps you have to just summon monsters and make them more powerful with your own strength so maybe they "screw the rules" because the pharaoh isn't used to spells and traps so he has to make shit up like 5,000 years ago. And maybe the other duelists don't stop him because they also don't know if you can do that. So the pharaoh just keeps doing it because nobody has told him he can't do that.

the first season was a mess altogether. they tried to make like an rpg with cards where everything could affect anything and not actually follow the game flow

How could they be at fault? There isn't any text on the cards. I have a pet theory that KaibaCorp got so rich primarily from AI, and then used the technology to make the dueling systems do whatever the players declared it should do.

Didn't that happen to Kaiba in the Japanese version and was censored in the western version? Still, I like how in the anime Keith just said "Fuck this," and just beat up some players to get their star things so that he could get into the final rounds in the tournament. Also, I like how in the battle city arc lots of characters cheated, and Yugi would create strategies based on them cheating. Like the one where he expected the guy to cheat a dark magician at the top of his deck so it would be the first card he drew, so that he could use a card that sent every card in his hand to the graveyard. Funnily enough, the guy he fought with Exodia stacked his deck mostly with Exodia cards. I like how Yugi expected this, came up with a strategy to get him to play a piece of Exodia on the field, then used a card which made his opponent's incredibly cheap deck useless. My only issue is that the card Yugi used is very situational. There's literally no other type of deck or situation where the card could be used, so why would he even have it at all?
