the prestige isn't a sci fi. Here my explanation(spoiler): Tesla's machine never works, hugh jackman had a twin, the double that he used at the first way to do the Transported man. We see everything from the point of view of Bale. At the end, in the place where the water tanks were, only one of them has a "Jackman", who was his twin. Jackman uses all the tricks of the movie to cheat Bale in the end. There are in internet some better explanations that mine
