FWIW, my recommendation for those who are in control states like me and can't really get allocated bottles easily, is to switch from seeking allocation bottles to getting store picks. WV here allows retailers to do picks in a control state pretty easily. I have bought several great bottles of KC Single Barrels here. In Ohio, they do a great big Single Barrel Pick Drop between Thanksgiving and Christmas with super unique single barrels from many different distilleries like High West, Jefferson's, Weller, etc... Pennsylvania has a number of KC picks, but are online only for PA residents or exclusive in a few stores. Yeah...go for picks instead of allocated, especially if someone has a similar palate to you.
@BourbonRealTalk Жыл бұрын
That's a great suggestion! Store picks can often be just as good, if not better, than allocated bottles and they are usually much more accessible. It's great to know that there are options for those of us in control states. Have you had any particularly good store picks that you would recommend?

I agree with you on the Pappy and the Weller, and I would add the Weller single barrel to the list. The Eagle Rare 17 to me is a good bottle, but I've never paid more than 150 for it. I live in Nashville, but I own property in Alabama, and they've got a monthly and quarterly allocation that I go to, and everything is at MSRP. The selection they've got is impressive, and it's mostly barrel picks. I've bought the whole BTAC lineup for less than what I would pay for 1 bottle in Nashville. Birthday bourbon, Russell's 15, Parkers Heritage, and the list goes on.

Iron Wolf has a full distillation facility, but they source their bourbon from other distillers, which isn't inherently bad, but I wish they made that clearer. I've also spoken to the owners over the years we've been going (since 2017), and they remain intentionally vague about the mashbill composition. I'm happy to see a video that points out that these hyped-up bottles of whisky might not be worth the time and effort to acquire them. This is how I have felt all along. I have plenty of other things to do with my life, so I don't have the time and energy to engage in the hunt. Some people enjoy the thrill of the hunt, so I suppose it is worth the effort for them. That's fine - we all have the right to choose our own hobbies. Secondary market prices are outrageous too. Probably most, if not all, of these would be worth getting if they could be found at MSRP, but stumbling upon one of them without spending loads of time and building relationships isn't likely to happen. I recently came close on one of the semi-rare ones. A Vons grocery store had a tag on an empty spot in the locked case: Eagle Rare 10-year for $40. My guess is that they got a case or two, and it sold out rapidly. Eagle Rare really is rare where I live, though I hear that it turns up somewhat regularly in other parts of the country. I'm not going to hunt for it, but $40 for a quality 10-year-old bourbon is a good price, so I'll get one if I happen to be in the right place at the right time. It's a good idea to check the liquor section in the grocery store when out grocery shopping. Though grocery stores usually don't have a great selection, they sometimes get the lower end allocated bottles, and their prices are usually reasonable.
@BourbonRealTalk Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences. I agree that the hype around certain bottles of whiskey can sometimes overshadow the actual taste and enjoyment of the drink. It's great that you found a good deal on Eagle Rare and I appreciate the tip about checking the liquor section at grocery stores. Do you have any other tips for finding good deals on whiskey?
@heatherharrison264 Жыл бұрын
@@BourbonRealTalk The Eagle Rare 10 was a near-miss since it was out of stock when I was there, but maybe it or something else will be there on a future grocery shopping trip. I won't make a special trip to the store to see if some fantastic booze happens to be there, but when I'm there anyway, it only takes a few seconds to check out the liquor, so it is worth doing. Since I don't actively hunt, I don't have a lot of tips. The only other one I have is to check out bars. If you are fortunate enough to live in an area that has good bars, you might be able to try some of these hyped-up whiskies for a reasonable price. Where I live, the retail situation on allocated bourbon is so dire that it would drive a tater to total despair, but at least on the semi-rare ones, the bar situation is quite different. I know of at least four bars that sell Blanton's for around $17 to $20 for a 2-ounce pour (not a bad price when typical bar mark-ups are taken into account), and I have seen many others, including versions of E. H. Taylor, Booker's, and Eagle Rare. I've even found some of the mid-grade Van Winkle and Weller bourbons at prices that weren't horrible (around $20 to $50), including a very nice Weller Antique 107 barrel pick for around $20 a pour. If you are inclined toward the hunt, try a few of them at a bar to determine which ones you like best, and you can focus your search on those. Or if you are like me and don't want to participate in the hunt, a good bar provides a way to satisfy curiosity or to satisfy a craving for one that can't be located in the liquor store. I've come to regard the semi-rare allocated bourbons as bar bourbons, and for my collection at home, I buy whiskies that the bars don't have but are easily found at stores or distilleries. This situation is likely to vary from place to place. Due to variations in distribution and liquor laws, the retail and bar situations could be quite different from state to state.

What was the bottle that brought the lesson home for you guys? After starting this hobby, I had a lot of FOMO I was fighting all the time, I managed to keep it under a lid because I was always sticking to MSRP buys... until I found and bought Springbank 10. Another great video, thanks. I have 21 bottles on my shelf, all $43 or less. I do have a couple allocated bottles (Eagle Rare and Buffalo trace) but none of the expensive stuff. I am very frugal. Beside that, I wouldn't buy a $100 or $1000 bourbon for the same reason I own an Epiphone Les Paul instead of a Gibson Les Paul. I am not a very good player, so there is no reason to spend $1000+ on a guitar over a $450 guitar. My bourbon palate is not refined enough to appreciate a $100 or $1000 pour. I'd rather have 4 bottles of Early Times or 3 bottles of Buffalo Trace or 2 1/2 bottles of Blue Note uncut than 1 bottle of anything else. I'm not judging anyone who likes pricey bourbon - it's just not my thing. I got to try Weller 12 year before I was a daily bourbon drinker and I liked it, but without trying it side by side with something else I would not know if it is worth the price.

@@BourbonRealTalk those are some great points. I remember when we were looking for houses - we didn't want to look at houses above our price point, because we'd no longer like the affordable ones! (and that happened! We looked at a higher priced house, and I fell in love with it!). I trust you are right about the Stagg - I will probably never know. As an example, I have not bought Rare Breed, which so MANY people rave about. It's only $7 above my top price, and really, $50 is only $3 per drink (and I spend $7 at the ball game or a restaurant for a beer). Perhaps I am afraid I will really like it and keep spending more money. Same thing with 1910 and 1920. Just as your brother influenced you (in a great way, albeit through tragedy) my mom influenced me. She was an orphan during the Depression, and it was drilled into me not to waste money or food. That frugality still is with me at age 63 (by the way, today is my first day of retirement, so I suppose being frugal has been good to me). @BourbonRealTalk Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It's always important to keep in mind that the search for rare bottles can become overwhelming and expensive. Do you have a personal limit for how much you're willing to spend on a bottle, and if so, what is it?

There is no whisky out there that I would pay over $200 for. There are too many excellent whiskies out there that I can get for under a $100. I have to work too hard for my money to throw it away on hype.

Thanks for your comment! It's great that you know your budget and are able to find excellent whiskies at a lower price point. Do you have any recommendations for whiskies that provide good value for the price?

Yesterday, I saw a Willette purple-top in a liquor store for... wait for it... $6,000. Not a typo. SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS. I wasn't even hunting for allocated stuff--just looking to see if they had any more John J Bowman. It's absolutely insane what has happened to pricing and availability on some bottles. I just want ONE bottle of OWA and I'm willing to pay a bit over MSRP, but I can't find it AT ALL (though when I did see it, they wanted $300 for it).

Wow, $6,000 for a bottle of Willett purple-top is insane! It's unfortunate that pricing and availability have gotten so out of hand for some bottles. I hope you're able to find a bottle of OWA at a reasonable price soon. Have you tried checking any other stores in the area or online retailers?

For a page that is always preaching to be positive, this review seems to be the opposite of what this page is about. Seems pretty hypocritical to say don't hunt the bottles we are drinking, overpaid and, contributed to keep the secondary market going!

Thanks for your comment. As for the video, it was just a parody skit and not meant to be taken too seriously. But I appreciate your feedback and will definitely take it into consideration for future content. Do you have any suggestions for topics you would like to see covered on the channel?

Anything whiskey's over 100$ is just dumb. SOOOOO soooo many great ones for under 100$

Thanks for sharing your opinion. It's true that there are many great whiskeys under $100. However, some people may be willing to pay more for a special or rare bottle that they enjoy. What's your favorite whiskey under $100?

Who actually runs around looking for alcohol. Jack and coke please

Thanks for sharing your preference! While some people may enjoy exploring different types of alcohol, it's perfectly fine to stick with a classic like a Jack and Coke. Do you have a favorite brand of whiskey to use in your Jack and Coke?
