I'm no mechanic, but I work on my, and my families VWs and Audis, and I ALWAYS hated my life when I had to take off or put on wheels. So a tool that saved me from early gray hairs was a *Wheel Hanger.*
@adamroman56986 жыл бұрын
Paul’s spot on with the triple squares. However I like the rubber hockey pucks for jacking so my floor jack doesn’t ding up the bottom of the jack point. Also, having the wheel nut rod that screws into the hub, it makes tire removal and installs go much smoother.

All I can say is get the impact spline/triple squares bits rather than the regular ones. They are stronger and can be used with an air gun. Makes life a lot easier. Good look with your projects everyone

I learnt about that triple square socket/bit real quick. None of the regular auto stores had them when I needed a set. Had to order it online and I also picked up a complete set at a yard sale for $10. The 3/8 M12 from the $10 set came in handy with removing bolts from a motor mount. The 1/2 M12 that was in the set I ordered was too big for the tight space.

Great video as always Paul! I definitely agree with everything on the list. The only thing I guess maybe I would add that isn't on the list is the fuel injector tool but that's not as common of a part. Seems like way too often the intake manifold needs to come off and that tool is invaluable. Keep up the good work! 👍🏼

Interestingly, over the years I've accumulated every tool you listed except No. 11. Because I have a TT 225 quattro, the Haldex filter wrench is essential if you have earlier Haldex differentials. Along those lines, I have an air powered chalking gun to inject the Haldex oil when changing it.

I would say by far the most used tool for working on cars is the 1/4" air ratchet. No way you want to be working on cars all day without one. I had a lowly craftsman that worked flawlessly for 2 years of non stop use, and its still working I just don't do that much wrenching anymore.
@jarhead11456 жыл бұрын
I'd add in a press kit to that list (not really vw/audi specific but defiantly for DIY'ers), instead of buying whole new wheel hub to get new bearings or new parts like control arms to get new bushings, just buy the part you really want cheaply and press them in yourself. I have two pairs of control arms and what I do with the loose pair is repaint and press in new bearings and have them ready when the time comes for new bushings.

Something weird, but critical, could be polydrive. You can get triple square bits at AutoZone in a pinch, but polydrive is either tool truck or online. I'd keep a couple different sizes of those on hand. Mostly engine stuff, but a lot guys do their own timing chains/belts and a lot of cam gears are held on via polydriver fasteners.

I will either read repair instructions and order sockets beforehand, or start the job with shops open to buy what I dont have. I now always buy single sockets from the same socket company rather than socket sets, its much cheaper this way. Eg I only have inverse torx 14 (for 1.8t exhaust manifold to turbo, the socket set I borrowed didnt have 14 and I broke the bolts), and only one XZN (triple square), each cost about 4 eur for 1/2 size.

Triple square, you need backup supply... have broken 2 - 14mm recently on T4 suspension bottom ball joint, one loosening and one angel tightening 90Nm + 90deg, admittedly both old but were quality brand, replaced with Hazet which is what VW use, if you don’t know every hand tool with part number in VW workshop manuals is a Hazet. The triple square set in the vid is really amateur duty, if you’r gonna do more than weekend on your car, 10mm and above needs to be quality this applies to triple square and Allen, Snap-On, MAC, etc or Hazet or other German brands if you can find, Hazet Gedore etc may not be shinny but they do the job every day.
