Yeah, some people complain about Goku “always getting the win”, or “Vegeta always gets shafted”, but really, it’s mainly the the movies that give Goku extra credit and bump up his win record. Sure, Goku has plenty of wins and has saved the Earth so many times, but he isn’t completely OP and infallible, there’s plenty of times where Goku lost/was handicapped to balance things out: He lost to Jackie Chun (albeit narrowly) Got stomped by Tao Pai Lost to Tenshinhan (again narrowly) King Piccolo stopped his heart in their first fight Raditz clobbered him and Goku had to sacrifice himself to take his brother down Oozaru Vegeta crushed Goku and he was bailed out by Gohan, Krillin and Yajirobe He got tricked by Ginyu and briefly lost his body He didn’t take the heart medicine and got overwhelmed by 19 He gave up against Cell (though it was part of the plan), then his exhausted state, Goku got ragdolled by a Cell Jr He couldn’t maintain SSJ3 against Kid Buu and needed others to buy time while he made a Spirit Bomb He lost to Beerus twice He was beating Golden Freeza, but dropped his guard and got shot. He lost to Frost (Although to be fair, the latter was a cheating weasel) He gave up against Hit (though to be fair, it was because they were being held back by the tournament rules) He couldn’t take down Black or Merged Zamasu He got ringed out by Toppo (in the manga) He got bodied by Jiren several times, and even though Goku finally gained the edge with Ultra Instinct, it ran out He and Vegeta got overpowered by Broly and needed to fuse In the current arc, Goku hasn’t exactly been able to put Moro down after multiple attempts.

@@TheLegacyofHitchcock I think part of the issue is, while the Goku entries are mostly where he loses, these are the “big bads” at their final level, and Vegeta usually gets beat by each of them handily. Goku’s fights, meanwhile, gets to be more memorable and action heavy. It worked for arcs like Freeza (and doesn’t even happen in the Future arc since Goku gets beat down just as much, but even then his Kamehameha worked on Zamasu unlike Vegeta and Trunks’s twin Galick Gun), but in almost every arc afterward, Vegeta takes the backseat for Goku to have the real spotlight. Cell, Kid Buu, Beerus, Golden Freeza, Jiren and Moro as of late have more memorable fights with Goku than with Vegeta among fans, so this could be where the whole “shafted” complaint comes from, even if Goku isn’t always the victor.

I agree with this list. Especially the bout with EVERYONE VS Vegeta. Like dayumn. My man fought and got his ass beat in so many different ways and colors, he makes a crayon box look dull. Ass whooped by Kaio Ken x3, sent half way into orbit via Kaio Ken x4, Yajoribe cur his tail off, almost sent into orbit again via Spirit Bomb, crushed by a big ass Great Ape. And still lived to tell the story and get stronger. What the hell kinda creature survives that shit? Sorry, this is by far one of my favorite fights in dragonball history

Talking about Piccolo being able to grow in size: you know what would have been more satisfying to see for the ToP? Piccolo using that form again Anizala and the two of them taking each other out, or even Piccolo winning and then getting taken out by the Pride troopers. Dragon Ball was truly the greatest out of all the Series since they actually managed not to divate from the Manga. While the first bit of Dragon Ball Media I ever saw was the end of a Dragon Ball Z Saiyan Saga episode back when it was on Cartoon Network when I was four, I was first introduced to the series proper when I watch Dragon Ball Z Kai on Nicktoons when I was a teen. Though I really got into it when I first bought my first Dragon Ball Season five Blue Brick (didn’t have any earlier seasons at the time since my town didn’t have many anime nerds), when I was watching the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai arc, that was when I fell in love with the series, which also got me back into Martial Arts.

i would have liked to see Gohan(future) vs the androids on the list, whilst i know it's more a one sided beatdown than a fight, Gohan's use of tactics, the atmosphere and use of lighting and contrast in the sequence, the travelling through the ruined city of the future timeline and the ultimate heart wrenching conclusion upon trunks' discovery of his fallen mentor make for something not only memorable, but beautiful in it's tragedy. As for stakes, No dragon Balls, no senzu beans, little chance of a happy ending. Gohan lays down his last effort, minus an arm, because (in his mind) he's the last hope his shattered world has of ending this threat. Thanks for your list guys, hope you had a great christmas.

Jiren's personality may be wooden at face value, but I see something much deeper there, especially as his stoic nature crumbles: Complex Psychological Trauma. The effects of C-PTSD vary wildly, but, as a sufferer, I fully relate to his personality. The single-minded pursuit of strength above all else; the attempted abandonment of emotion; the squelching of vulnerability; the decimation of his personality under stress; the personal history that dictates his motives; the push to be invulnerable; the distrust of others --they all represent someone who's been deeply wounded. I can fully understand the criticism of his lack of personality, but I've adopted the same strategy: removing emotions and maintaining a flatlined character is a way some folks try to survive their struggle. It's NOT a good strategy of normal living, as it tears your world apart, but it's an adaptation to unyielding traumatic scenarios. To be fair, the writing could have definitely represented this better, but it still exists. Understandably (and fortunately), it's hard to relate to for most people. That's my personal take on Jiren.

That was a really great take! Jiren has an alright character, it’s just reeeeeeeally not presented well. But I definitely found myself liking him a bit as his vulnerabilities started to show. Honestly for how deliciously entertaining Perfect Cell’s personality is, he feels to me like as much of a wall, power-wise, as Jiren, and I wonder how people would feel about him if not for that great personality. I never liked how there was never a proper struggle fight against him besides the super short SPC beam struggle finale.

If anyone is interested in learning more about drawing fight scenes in comics, Dragon Ball vol. 20/DBZ vol. 4 (the entire Vegeta fight) is an absolute masterclass. I don’t think Toriyama’s sequential art ever quite tops itself here. As great as the TV version is, the manga is just sublime here. Ironically, the opposite is true of the Boo arc fights, especially Goku vs Pure Boo. You can tell in the art of the manga that Toriyama’s completely done at that point. Which is funny since I think the Boo arc is probably the most consistently well animated arc in DB.

Honestly, I loved that the Goku V Piccolo fight made it on the list. It's honestly my favorite fight in all of Dragonball. I do see why Goku v Vegeta in the saiyan saga got first place though, and I'm more than grateful Goku v Piccolo made it to the #2 spot lol. Great list. It'll be interesting. because they could either play it for laughs, or they could use it as an opportunity for it to be the ONE TIME Vegeta gets through to Goku, and where Goku really realizes how angry Goku's nonchalant treatment of their rivalry makes him. It will either be hilarious, or a genuine moment of emotional resonance, and honestly, given who's writing it, I don't see why the two have to be mutually exclusive.

Great list! I started reading the manga when raditz showed up so i literally got the best fight (number one in this video) in the whole series when i started the series. I STILL remember the feeling of reading those chapters. One of the best feelings i have ever felt. I have never felt that happy about reading anything or watching anything ever in my life. ok, so literally watching this again two years after release cause I love this goddamn show, and I just wanna say that I think knowing Goku could have gone Super Saiyan 3 during the Vegeta fight is a double edged sword in retrospect as well. Yeah, you could say that it causes a little bit of the fight to mean less, but I also think it adds to the characters later on, when Vegeta realized that he was still outclasses once again. The little comment he made about it later, saying he saw Goku go super saiyan 3 and HATED it is soooo good IMO. It nearly gets them killed because Vegeta didnt even want to help Goku with fusion at first, and I think in the end it reinforced their relationship because it made vegeta realize that even a little boost to win one fight against his rival wasnt going to be good enough for him.

One thing I never see people talking about with Jiren vs. Goku, Frieza, and A17 is how when they’re talking behind the barrier and bonding, in the background you can hear an orchestral version of Limit Break, the second OP of DBS. I think Goku vs Frieza should have been included. Maybe in the top 5. Look you have to admit, it might not have had the best choreography, but it damn sure was one of the biggest rivalries, and biggest plot developments in the series. Plus it introduced us to the very first SSJ transformation. I started watching dragon ball around the sayin saga, and Goku vs Vegeta, trust me, the greatest fight ever. However Goku vs Frieza was one of the most important, and dramatic battle in the series at the time. If you don’t think this battle had purpose, then I don’t know what it had at all.

Because it's Goku and against everyone's better judgement he wants a good fight. I agree though, I wish they would have brought back more of the original DB villains like Spike the Devilman because I'd like to see how some of this overpowered stuff from the early series' would compare to overpowered stuff found later on. (On that note, also pretty amused that a lot of villains try to exploit the dragon for immortality or youth when there is APPARENTLY a fountain of youth on Earth that Master Roshi has notably USED)

I am a little sad that Goku VS Caulifla and Kale/Kefla did not make the list, although that might be just because i am biased towards those characters and especially the tokyo drift kamahameha.

Agreed. The battle is a nice surprise for the mid part of the tournament and one in which the Universe 6 fighters really step up. When it starts you get a constant feeling that the fight's gonna get screwed up by interruption from other fighters but luckily everyone stays back. From there on in it's a constant feeling of escalation as Caulifla starts working through each of Goku's forms one after the other. After Kale steps in and masters her Broly form you kind of figure that the fight's wrapping up until the girl's reveal their secret weapon. By fusing together you realise that these are a real challenge for Goku and they actually beat the Blue form. By this point we actually realise that it'd be cheap for Goku just to suddenly win against this threat. He actually has to earn it and prove himself the stronger fighter. Even Ultra Instinct isn't enough at this point as Kefla's power and intensity is still overwhelming. Fortunately for Goku, Ultra Instinct's focus on dodging gives him the edge he needs to charge, get up close and release the Kamehameha he needs to wipe these two out of the ring. It's a satisfying pure fight that shakes up the slowest part of the arc and even takes the focus away from Universe 6's strongest contender. I feel that this should have taken the place of the Jiren fight at the end. The guys sold it well as the third placer and it's not a bad fight, but it takes place at the end of an arc that i kind of just wanted to end already. It also doesn't help that Jiren is easily the most boring opponent that Goku has ever fought.

For #2, granted this is a side point, but can we also mention how this is the first and only time we see adult* Goku in the classic Dragon Ball style? Even compared to the first episode of DBZ, Goku looks quite different compared to how we know him today and honestly... it feels so damn right. Like, DB Adult Goku feels like he captures the whole character perfectly, and I think I prefer it to modern day Goku. *I say adult, but he's 18 here, but if Buu Saga Gohan can be called "Adult Gohan" despite only being 16 (technically 17 including the time chamber), then I can Goku an adult here.

To be fair, take Mercenary Tao and plop him in GT, and he becomes the best villain of the series. Seriously, that is GT’s biggest flaw- their enemies are so... meh. Bad meh. Like “Code Phoenix” bad. Like “Calender man” bad. Like “Kylo Ren” bad. Like “The Riddler” bad. Like “The Beetle” bad. Just... unforgivably bad. Janemba was an awesome villain design and idea that I’d love to get a reboot in the form of a Super Movie. The Para Para series, though? Let it die off like Ben Reilly or Boba Fett, ya know? Or just rename it to “Inuyasha: the Dragon Ball Journey.” Because... that’s what it is. Although I will admit... The Joker Well, thank you for asking. Because... 1. Jim Carrey 2. A villain inspired by Moriarty flawed by enough hubris to edge out Loki. 3. A thousand redesigns, most of which make him look like a parody of himself. 4. Born of DC’s Atrocious silver age, when they decided to create a villain formula that derived to “(Noun) man” gimmicky villains are fine, but they deliver zero fun later on. 5. Jim Carrey 6. While his background was enthralling (all of them)... he basically equates to nothing from there and most often just ends up being a one-shot filler comic or part of a team of equally discarded villains. 7. Did I mention Jim Carrey? He’s the centerpiece to the “Gag villain” museum, standing proudly next to Guldo and the Toiletnator. I know he’s got a few fans out there, but... yeah. Pretty sure Penguin’s had more success against old Dynamic Dildo than Mr. Riddles.
