Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore was the Nobel prize winner for literature in 1913 and he has a strange distinction of writing national anthems of two countries India and Bangladesh and inspiring a third national anthem of Sri Lanka. Incidentally he is the only other one along with Bjornsen of Norway to write national anthem with an eminent Nobel Laurie background. I wish one his creations could be included here.

I am Italian and, naturally, I deeply respect my National Antem. However, I do so because it reflects the colourful history of my Country. In my personal opinion, all antems are great, each in its own way. Some sound more powerful, some play on a lighter rythm. The Japanese one is, indeed, based on a musical scale that might sound a bit difficult for a westerner, but it is simple and elegant. I cannot say which antem is THE BEST as they al speak to the heart of the people who feel and understand their significance. I find impossible to be impartial and objective. Moreover, any piece of music can be evaluated at different levels: the quality of the muisic, the poetry hidden in the words, the sense of harmony it inspires or the courage it arouses....I just see any anthem as a piece of music above music, capable of reunite people from all corners of te world. When we hear our antem it is like when we see our flag: it donates us a feeling of belonging and identity.

As an Australian of a certain age I grew up with God Save the Queen as our National Anthem .. Which I HATED and got into trouble at school for not standing for it. I always Wanted and still do the song " God Bless Australia " But at least we finally have our own National Anthem...So I guess Advance Australia Fair will have to do.Advance Australia Fair was written by Peter Dodds McCormick in 1878 and first performed by Andrew Fairfax on the 30th November 1878..But it was not made Australia's National Anthem until 1984.

Two points; Some anthems were given much more time than others, making a rank order less accurate. Also, I would have put the top ones as France, US, Italy, UK and Canada. I I agree that France did deserve number one, though. One more point, if "Rule Britannia" were a National Anthem for the UK, it would tower over all the others, hands down.

I think the time difference is because some anthems usual length is longer than others. Many like the U.S. anthem have several verses not usually used. Others have one very long verse. It would be disrespectful to play half a verse.
