Sorry but Hello Dolly is actually wonderful and Barbra was brilliant, her age being irrelevant. Hindsight can teach us we weren’t always right. And Xanadu does indeed have a terrible script, but it’s musical numbers are anazing.

Both Barbra Streisand and Lucille Ball were miscast due to age. BUT! Streisand had the singing, dancing and acting talent to overcome the age problem. Lucy was out of luck on all counts. "Hello Dolly!" is also the last work of many behind-the-camera people of the MGM musical glory days. If Barbra had waited until age 49 to play Dolly, the people who knew how mount such a film would all have been gone.

I just watched Hello Dolly recently since I'd heard they spent as much on it as they spent on Cleopatra so I wondered how it could have bombed. I definitely understand now. Apart from Barbara, who was just adorable despite the age issue (I just assumed she was widowed at a young age) all the other characters were shallow and boring and I truly could have cared less what happened to them, the songs were mostly bland and unmemorable and the dance numbers dragged on for far too long. There's just no way Barbara could have carried that whole movie, but she sure did try. Considering the sheer amount of money spent for such a measly result, I can't help wondering if someone was pocketing it.
