they both die at the end ruined me for like 3 days. i knew it was going to hurt going in but it was not the punch in the stomach i thought it was- it was like falling down a stone staircase and hitting every single step in a new part of your body. you think by two thirds of the way down there's no way it can hurt anymore, but there's a new pain each time and you can't stop the momentum and avoid the hurt. it's a great book :)

I love this list! Especially happy to see Rebecca on the list as I'm writing on it for my MA in English Literature as I read it for my undergrad. The only thing (just as it's a major point of the novel and the themes) is that the 'protagonist' of Rebecca isn't called Rebecca. Rebecca is the dead wife and the protagonist is never named which is vital as the book is about how her identity if affected by the remains of Rebecca's presence in the house. Hopefully, that makes sense - I just didn't want you to get confused when reading it but I hope you enjoy it so much, personally I love it :)
@AClockworkReader6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for clarifying that! I was actually kind of confused because the summary on the book makes it sound like her name is Rebecca lolll
@pokemonumbreon16 жыл бұрын
Haha it's okay yeah a lot of summaries about Rebecca do that and it's a little disheartening when people don't like the book simply because summaries aren't clear about that so they get confused :')

I read a Tale of Two Cities twice last year. It's so deep but quite slow. I read it because of the Infernal Devices, and the parallels are AMAZING. I fell deeper in love with Will, which seemed impossible, but Dickens & Clare are just beautiful together. Two Cities is 3 books in 1, the first book is really, really slow & doesn't make that much sense. But the story starts tying together in the 2nd book and comes to a heartbreaking conclusion in the 3rd book. I think the hardest part of Dicken's book is that it's plot driven, but has a lot of heavy character sketches. Tedious reading, but gorgeous characters. And Victoria is such a great show! I'm so excited for Season 2!!!

Rebecca by Daphne Du Marier is one of those thriller gothic novels. It has a dark atmosphere and enigmatic characters! I'd recommend reading it around Halloween. Also, check out the 1940 film adaption--it accurately depicts the story and it's in black and white, so I personally thought it added to the whole sinister-vibe !
