I’ve lost consistent high range due to numbness and swelling of the lips. I’ve used a Bach 10.5 for a long time and recently switched to 7C thinking maybe I needed more room to buzz. Any suggestions on what to do?

had a stroke and my range is gone. just listening in for some tips. playing out on the street in my wheelchair is my only way to survive now and some days i can't even make a sound. starting back out with pedal tones trying to get my face flexible again. it's a long hual. i had no medical help, but the first thing i got moving was my valve fingers. hope i can get my chops back. thanks.

If Im being honest its the night before my audition for the top band at my high school and Ive been struggling with my two octave scales and wondering why I cant get high and that tongue arch thing literally just increased my range by like four nots and theyre easy to get out and I cannot thank you enough actually a lifesaver

Kurt: Don Reinhardt taught me tongue arch and lip compression, ( rolling in and rolling out). He also taught me diaphragm compression. He warned against over breathing, also, as you do. You are absolutely right and correct. Good work.

Excellent advice. Your comments at 6:12 completely true. I think for some players who don't need to play high regularly they end up neglecting tongue arch and just let chops do the work but as you explain this limits them for going high and even if they can play high they have poor endurance. Then when they need to go high there's too much pushing on face, squeezing etc. going on. I've been there. I still sometimes fall into that trap. I think what's helped me is doing more of those lip trills but getting tongue arching to do most of the work not chops.

@Swedishnbkongu OMG! I can't believe I saw your comment. I played for over 30 years until a skiing accident about 10 years ago where I bit completely through my upper lip. The plastic surgeon did a good job of fixing the look,. But I'm left with a ridge of scar tissue in my upper lip. It completely ruined my embouchure. I've been looking for others with similar injuries to see if they've been able to overcome them either through adjusting how you play or by medical procedure. It kills me to not have played for so long now. It was SUCH a huge part of my life. I can still play but my range and tone suck. Feels like almost like I'm starting over again. And maybe that's the answer. It's just so frustrating to go from where I was back to where I am now. Anyway, just wanted to reach out to you.

My man…. I’m 42 years old. I was a hell of a trumpet player up until I was 22 when I quit. I was technically great and my tone was great but I could never hit the upper register worth a damn. I would hit lesser skilled players who could but o swear they were gate-keeping. I mean I'm only a senior in high school and what this mam is saying is 100% true. highest I can play right now is around a high C and D sometimes E I have played Double G before many times but Still working on it. believe me it takes smart practice and patience. just be careful don't over practice. take breaks when needed. don't hurt yourself. it takes time and practice.

Joseph dont try to give advice unless your comment makes sense, you just said that the highest you could play is a high c d or e. A double g is two notes above that. By double g if you mean the first one above the staff, that is a high g and not very high. Once again, check your facts before you try to help people with them.

I appreciate this video being made my dude. I’m getting back into playing trumpet as there was nothing more than to be better at my first instrument. Finally picked one up (Yamaha 2320) and am stoked. Was ironically called out here with playing high. I failed the G scale every week during our scales test my freshman year in intermediate concert band because I refused to let it beat me and give in to going low G (another challenge later). Your video reminds me how rewarding working towards the goal is and hope it influences other up and coming players to do the work.

Holy crap! Talk about the right tip at the right time: I've been working on technique a lot recently - practicing the Clarke exercises and scales to increase range and fluidity as well as double-tonguing them to get my articulation up to scratch. This was excruciating at first but is starting to feel more natural and relaxed, partly as a result of discovering 'Anchor Tonguing'. This is tonguing by 'anchoring' the tip of the tongue behind the bottom row of teeth then pronouncing the 'Tu' with the arch of the tongue (the medial-dorsal surface) It turns out that this is what I started doing naturally, before discovering that it is advocated by some top masters, including Clarke himself!It allows you to tongue without breaking the air stream, leading to a real fluidity. Then after watching this video I tried it for high notes and oh my...increased my range instantly! High C/D feels effortless with this technique. The best bit, however, is that I can use the identical tongue position for both techniques, meaning double tonguing high notes just became about 10 times easier!!!!! Total revelation!!

My new year's resolution was to get to double high C. Since I began to focus on my range I've gotten a few notes higher. Right now Im at F over high C. I've been stuck there for months, but the high register I had when I began (Bflat to D) has gotten so much more powerfull and less brittle

I am mainly a sax/keyboard guy and pick up a trumpet occasionally on the gig to play a few simple things, nothing elaborate. I've messed around with the trumpet since high school and I can hit high "C" most of the time but rarely use it on the gig, "A", "Bb" is usually the highest I'll venture. Also my mouthpiece placement is hopelessly to the right of center, always has been always will be; that will never change. So I had my doubts about trying this technique. Just five minutes ago I played a middle "G", arched my tongue, and a "C" popped out immediately, the very first time trying it. I couldn't believe my ears. It was truly a light bulb moment and gives me some hope that even a misfit like myself who plays off to the side has some chance of increasing my range, even at the ripe old age of 60! Thanx Kurt!!

Believe me, if I ever decide to attack the instrument seriously, I will sign up for whatever you're doing chief! Right now i got my hands full trying master the tongue arch. It manifests itself much easier on the low notes, though in my first practice session yesterday I was able to get a high "Bb" to pop up to "C". Then I went to "C" and the "D" wanted to come out, but not just yet, more practice, more chops!

I list my confidence after an injury , from over practicing, and it took me 6 months to play above the staff. Years later, as the 2nd trumpet solo improviser guy I am starting to play high again after discovering a more efficient mouthpiece and with systematic practice . Hi, I have a question - I've been working on the tongue arch and found it really useful - after struggling with high notes for years and being told just 'air' and 'muscle' and strength exercises not really helping me, this is really awesome! Just wondering - when tonguing crisply the tongue tip needs to be at the base of the upper teeth not at the base of the lower teeth (gum line), and I can't maintain a tongue arch with the tip of my tongue up there - how do you get around that? Should I be able to? Thanks!!

While TONGUE ARCH is employed, you can NOT tongue with the tip because the tip is anchored behind the bottom teeth. So, we tongue just a little bit up from the tip where the bend starts to happen. This bended part of the tongue acts as the secondary percussive attack against the roof of the mouth just behind the top teeth. Yes, it takes time and skill to master this so it sounds like normal SINGLE tonguing!

So, middle school jazz band, all the first chairs graduated and we have a bunch of 7th grade trumpets, first year in jazz, E on the staff was rather difficult. It’s up to you, but you have to be sure this is what you want to do, it’s not fair wasting ppl time, if you love playing then excel, if you just like it than you’ll just quit again, your at that age were you can excel to have professional quality skills but you have to really want it, hard work is the key and determination 😎🎺

Great advice, just like my trumpet tutor in 1966-69 taught. My past experience includes trumpet 5th grade through sophmore-college, bands, stage bands, youth symphony, mastering Arban's method, Claude Gorden, etc. I just retired from my engineering (day) job, bought a beautiful Charlie Melk refinished/valve aligned Conn 28B similar to my old trumpet. I will definitely look you up if/when I need help-lessons.

Hey quick question, I fall into the category of players who have never used the tongue arch before, and I've done so because I was never able to get it to work properly. I've tried many times over a couple of years to figure it out, but I still to this day have had no luck. I've just now tried doing the exercise at around 11:50 in the video, but all I've gotten out of it is a really thin sounding "G". Any tips to help develop this skill from the ground up? Yes...and NO. bending the pitch up actually consitutes somewhat of a no valve scale....but I already have that covered

Hi, I tried your method, but if I attack a note with my tongue touching my lower teeth instead of my upper teeth, the sound is very dirty and not controlled. Maybe because I've never done it before. But all the teachers and books told me to touch my upper teeth. Also, for the lower notes I need a flexible jaw, and the tongue arch creates an obstacle to the free jaw. So Can I use the tongue arch only in the upper register? How can I connect the lower and upper register if they have different tongue positions? I need a pause to change the tongue position in this case

Thanks for the video! Just wondering how to do you achieve sharp, pure tonguing with your tongue anchored? I have always used the tip of my tongue at different heights to control the pitch and this has allowed for sharp tonguing, i will try this technique later though!

I have never had a good range at all so I would imagine that is why. I tried this today and certainly found higher notes required less pressure but the notes sounded muddy :(

On some good days, I could play high high Bs and Cs effortless while on some bad days I could barely play high high Gs, a note that I play frequently and should not be a problem. Any particular reason why this happens?

I recognize this... I play trumpet for almost 7 years now... Just since a few months my amazing first chair players all left and all of a sudden now I'm playing first chair with a friend of mine at equal level. We feel responsible to pick the section up and want to get really better. As said above, I recognize this problem but I seem to have it even worse than anyone I know. Usually my reach just gets to the high C and D, but I have had days where I could barely play the E below. Also I can't get a good sound and before you hear the note I play you hear like air blowing through, if you get what I mean... Any tips to play just a little bit more consistent?

I've been playing roughly the same time as you and I know exactly what you mean by, "air blowing through". I don't get this too often - probably 1 or 2 times per month - however, probably because I don't regularly practice; only 3 hours worth from 2 days a week. It could be that you are overworking, however I would not recommend following my routine. If not, then it could be something psychological.

I've found that doing lots of lip slurs to build endurance greatly lowers the frequency of these bad days, but you have to practice them consistently.

Hi Kurt, i have decently sized lips and i tend to get ulcers on the inside of my bottom lip. Do you think this would be caused by too much pressure, incorrect embrouchure or my lip size.

Maybe all 3, but more than likely your body is too acidic either genetically or by using too much spice, jalapenos, chiles, etc... Try a double dose of tagamet for 2-3 days and see if that evens out the acid and helps those canker sores diminish

I've been experimenting with this technique, but I can't figure out how to maintain tonguing if the tip of my tongue is anchored to my lower teeth. I typically tongue to the roof my my mouth. Is this incorrect? A hangover from learning flute first? Cheers.

If you are tonguing in the upper register, you end up tonguing with the forward bend in your tonuge, UNLESS...you are double or triple tonguing up there...then it's all chops!

lol I still haven't arrived at that age yet! However, in my early 20's they started to get a better quality sound and more power....mp to mf. Now it can be ff to fff. Difficult to be consistent up there. Bud Brisbois and only a handful of some others were what you would call consistent

It's so uncomfortable playing with the tongue arch. I can't play as high as I can without it, but I can hit up to a C above the staff currently. And it's a much cleaner sounding high C than without the tongue arch. Going to keep working on it.

You are arching your tongue to far in the back instead of up near the front. So, you are blocking off the air and causing it to shove right up and through your nose. Kinda like when you swallow coke or a drink, but then laugh, burp or whatever....that drink comes out your nose!

Yes Sarah, you should work on bending the tongue closer to the tip. Remember, the tip is anchored and touching behind your lower teeth so focus on the bend (arch) right there instead of back in your throat!

Hey Kurt, very, very beginning student and in my 60s. Seems my tongue goes naturally into an arch, but then, also, the sides of the tongue curve forward. So the tongue arches, but in addition the sides of the tongue come forward, so the tongue is curved but in two dimensions: up and down and forward. Good? Bad? Indifferent? Thanks.

That was me in high school and college. I had really strong chops and could play up to the high D consistently and strong all night long, but could go no higher no matter how much I practiced. My E sounded exactly like when you played with no tongue arch.I think I was just muscling all that with a ton of air and chops now lol. Never once had one of my instructors mention tongue arch before. Thank you for the explanation, really excited to start practicing this as I'm getting back into the instrument as a comeback player

i can see why a lot of players cant play high but what happed when you can only reach a G and the tone has degraded to where it sounds like a bunch of pops instead of a steady clear vibration? i have tried different positions, more top lip, less, roll in roll out. i used to have a decent tone but it just ended. ive been mpc buzzing, free buzzing and the callett method and nothing lasts. sounds airy. any ideas?

@@TRUMPETSIZZLE its been 50 years since horn lessons. im 63 and did fairly well for decades. i stopped for a few years but am back again. one day about a year ago, things went south. this airy sound started in and its never been the same. i can get a few lower note songs on the flug but anything over an e is really awful. the horn really makes this popping airy sound stand out but is somewhat covered with the flug.

better than what I could do back then. In Junior High you really need to focus on technique. Go to those solo and ensemble festivals. Get those fingers faster, tonguing better, tone better. Then? It could, but it sounds like maybe it is affecting your range positively.
