I'm 46. Metal is music I listened to since I was 4 or 5 (lots of Sabbath and Deep Purple). Got in to Thrash Metal when I was about 18. I was about 20 and in college and I remember reading all about Burzum and Darkthrone and Emperor and Mayhem but I was so prejudiced against this stuff I wouldnt give it a listen. Then 10 years ago I got into Opeth and ever since I have been on this long march backwards to all this great music. It's a lonely place to be though because absolutely none of my family or buddies would give any of this stuff a listen for even one minute (believe me I've tried). It's amazing though of you just give it a chance the way this stuff can grow on you....

Many of these albums also got me into the genre, but I'll never forgot the first time I heard Emperor's 'I am the Black Wizards', and everything... just clicked. Great taste, sir! For me, Storm of the Light's Bane is only superficially a 'death metal' album. Its intention, its atmosphere and spirit are wholly Black Metal.

I heard almost all of it. That At The Gates album was also the first i bought within this style of music, but i would consider then melo death, i think the other best within that style are the first 2 In Flames and Dark Tranquillity albums. Cradle of Filth when Dusk came out was considered black metal. Here are my top 20 in no order. 1. Satyricon - Nemesis Divina or Dark Medieval Times 2. Immortal - Battles In The North or Pure Holocaust 3. Borknagar - Borknagar 4. Dimmu Borgir - For All Tid or Enthrone 5. Darkthorne - Under a Funeral Moon 6 .Arcturus - Aspera 7. Covenant - In Times Before the Light 8. Cradle of Filth - Dusk or Cruelty 9. Gehenna - Seen Through the Vails Of Darkness 10. Burzum - Det Som Engang Var 11. Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse 12. Finntroll - Jaktens Tid or Midnattens 13. Entrall - Prophecies of the dying 14. Abyssos - Together We Summon The Dark 15. Enslaved - Yggdrasll 16. Hecate Enthroned - The Slaughter of the Innocence 17. Old Man's Child - Born Of The Flickering 18. Mayhem - De Mysteriis 19. Gorgoroth - The Antichrist or Under the Signs of Hell 20. The idea of a Top 20 getting you into a (sub)genre is interesting to me. By 20, aren't you already INTO it? Do you need further convincing? I'm being cheeky, though. I can only think of 2 albums that got me interested in black metal and then with the help of some magazines like Pit and Metal Maniacs and some cheap compilation CDs, I was off to the races. Does your copy of Battles in the North have the correct track listing? I have a 2013 jewel case release and the tracklisting does not match the order on the disc. It's a little annoying. Do you have enough albums and/or interest to do an episode on Necropolis Records like the one you did on Napalm Records?

Great picks!! I understand you feeling about Varg man... Very influential, but he is a complete idiot and a narcissist, to say the least. It's like he constantly tries to fit his views into some frame, every time he discovers something new. And the entire reason for his hate is just juvenile. If you ask me, many of these guys, they were just kids who didn't understand lots of things. But yeah, the music is something that really changed metal and opened up an entire new world of possibilities. Speaking of problem, I have the same problem with Inquisition. I believe we all know who and what Dagon is... The band Inquisition doesn't touch these subjects, but I'll be dead before I give this "man" my money. And the fact that he tries to hide these facts like a rat makes it even worse. Which is a big problem in BM... Some of the most talented bands out there are full of people who are bunch of filth, to say the least.
