Honestly, someone should have talked to Tyra about cutting the hair of dark skin contestants. It's not something that is normally discussed and that's why you hear the contestants are afraid of looking masculine. Dark skin women have always been minimized and seen as masculine just because it's one way prejudice and racism rears it's head. I don't care if you think this exists, because it does and happens to dark skin women like me. I think Tyra should have known better than to do some of these makeovers for shock value too.
@lastofthetimelords093 жыл бұрын
Tyra, unfortunately, does not care about any of the contestants. She cares about what will get her ratings and money. Even if it makes her racist and sexist towards her own race and gender. You’d think she would with the way she preaches being comfortable in your own skin but she just means comfortable in the skin someone else deems perfect. I obviously don’t know anything about being a woman of color but I do know hair is a very, very important and serious part of culture. To sit there and cut it off or treat it like it’s just another thing is so disrespectful. I feel like all the meltdowns in this video were justified. You can’t just start messing with someone’s hair and expect them to be cool with it. It also felt like she was trying to put all the women of color in a box, giving them all the same haircut. It’s like you said, it plays into the prejudice and racism of “you all look alike” crap. The producers, Tyra, the judges, they should all know better. All women; however they look, should be able to make the choice for themselves on how they want to look. When someone feels good, that’s when you’re going to get the best photos anyway.

@Terri Badger - First...Tyra ABSO-FREAKIN-LUTELY did the "makeovers" for shock value & ratings!! Its BEYOND irritating when they say we don't cut your hair just to cut it because they surely did and we could ALL see it!! Second - I'm clearly white but I see what you are saying about dark skinned women feeling masculine when they had short hair because we watched several break down over that fact after Tyra cut their hair. But I can't see that it's a racial thing because look how many white girls had even worse freak outs after getting their hair chopped because they too looked masculine. I do feel that women with short hair are treated differently by a large portion of society. However I don't see it as a racist problem but rather a FEMALE problem. No woman should be treated like she's less feminine due to the length of their hair. NO WOMAN NO MATTER WHAT HER RACE

I hate that makeovers we’re forced. It’s sad to think someone like Tyra would say that to these girls that without the makeover they won’t ever be enough

I can’t blame Bianca for the breakdown. There are a lot of people, man or woman, that would have a moment if they were told that their hair was so damaged that it had to go. However, here’s my question: why did they not do some kind of consultation between the stylists and the models before deciding on and attempting the makeovers? Certain things do not work with certain hair texture. They should have done some sort of assessment before then, and they would have been able to see some things ahead of time. Things like, “Okay, this girl has really damaged hair, so it really needs to go,” or “Her hair is really fine. This type of weave is not going to hold with it.”

Honestly, hated how ANTM 24 usea Jeana to get fame and just to play with her. She said in an interview that she was so emotional bc her original makeover was her childhood hair, and then they changed it for the bald head. They did Terra of Cylcle 15 DIRRRRTTTTTYYYY!! Cut all her hair off and then immediately eliminated her! Of course she wasn't making them "believe the makeover"!! She didn't want it. She didn't like it. Yet they gave her NO time to adjust. That was crap! If they did that to show they weren't putting up with makeover tantrums then Tosh in Cycle 23 should've gotten the boot! But they kept her because she was a twin and they wanted to show the comparison! Bull!

I think Tyra took things way too far. At times. And when she had teeth filed, that was it. That gal has to live with her dental health for LIFE. Dental issues can be fatal, and dental anything is costly. To deliberately shave your teeth or carve a gap is removing protection.

They kept referencing Mia Farrow, Twiggy, "the pixie cut", the buxxcut, but never actually went through with any of those cuts. The cuts were always like an inch too long to actually be similar to those edgy styles. They always left the models looking like they were starting to grow out that cut (source- have actually had a buzzcut and later grew my buzz into a Mia Farrow style), of course that awkward length leaves people feeling off. You promised a buzzcut and delivered a pixie that's 3 months overdue for a trim.

Some of these girls had severe damage to their hair and scalp. Not to mention some of these makeovers are NOT versatile. Mohawks, tons of extensions, horrible coloring and the list goes on we’re not good for employable models. It was definitely done for shock value. I feel so sorry for Jada. To disregard her feelings was just too much. I BLAME TYRA.

"We're not making decisions for shock value." Okay, so why not give the girls some time to adjust the fact that you're about to cut 15+ centimeters of their hair? My opinion is that many of the girls overreact, but I would be in shock if someone told me "I'm gonna give you a sidecut this instant!". I took MONTHS to decide that I would get a sidecut and cut and shave my hair, it was not something I just did. Many overreacted, but it is justified overreaction.

To be fair ANTM professionals missed the mark on so many of their makeovers so it’s not realistic to expect contestants to “just trust them” . They screwed up a lot of the girls hair and damaged it bad too. I would definitely be pissed as w those weaves gone wrong and they left them w damaged hair after having to take it all out and trim the tiny bit they had left . Ugh that shit is on them and I would be devastated by bad they fkd my hair up .

I've grown my hair long & got it cut short so many times in my life. No big deal. But not only have friends & family melted down for one of my haircuts, frequently the hair technician would keep asking me during the process if I was alright, clearly anticipating emotional turmoil on my part, that never manifests.

2:58 "We're not making decisions for shock values" Mhm, yeah sure. I always loved the makeover episodes as a kid, but as an adult I really hate them and would wish for ANTM to stop with this. Every single "Meltdown" is justified in my opinion. No, these barely grown-ups do NOT have to let their hair cut or dyed. And I mean "barely" in an absolutley non mocking way. "This is only hair, you can let it grow" Sure you can, but just imagine letting your hair grow for years, keeping it healthy, spending hours caring for it, only for some random people to cut it off for a TV Show, that hardly brings any success. "This is only hair, you can re-dye it later" In fact, no, you can't really. I am a natural brunette, and let my hair get bleached, because I wanted them white. The damage was there, even though I let the job be done by professionals. And I don't even wanna talk about how it would be the other way around. And I always hated how they always made the girls look like psychos if they refused. Even though most of them were more like "I do not feel comfortable with this" in the beginning and only started crying later. Yeah, let them go to a professional hair stylist nearly noone can afford, pamper them, make them feel pretty and neat, and let them decide by themselves whether they want a drastic change, thats how it should be! Also, why did they make Eva 3:44 look 10 years older AND like a massive Karen?

I guess I don't understand the comment after Catie said "I feel like my hair makes me look like a boy. I don't want to look like a boy" that by 'today's standards' that would've gotten her kicked out of the competition? Why? She's not being derogatory to anyone. She is saying SHE doesn't like HER hair that short and it makes HER FEEL unfeminine. She's not allowed to have her own feelings about it?

This just looks like Tyra was playing “dress up” with real people. Experimenting, having no real idea or empathy of what she was doing. It’s disgusting. Almost sadistic. I know it’s just hair, but it means ALOT. My husband is Punjabi and had hair to his waist. There was an accident and had to chop it, and his devastation was real, even his mum cried. It’s a slippery slope when it comes to hair. We all know it grows back, but it can change everything in the meantime. :/
