This movie is so good. A great introduction to horror for younger viewers, and still absolutely spine-chilling for adults. The stop motion is incredible, Dakota Fanning voices Coraline to perfection, and the Other Mother is perhaps the creepiest animated villain ever.

One detail you forgot was the fact that the old well was located in a fairy ring (ring of mushrooms) that Coraline unwittingly stepped in. In European mythology, stepping in a fairy ring is bad luck. The fairies punish the human who does this by trapping them in their realm forever.

There is the easter egg about the Coraline doll. When Coraline falls asleep in the other world, and her other parents are there, the Beldam is sitting in the chair. When it fades to the morning back in the real world, the doll is sitting in the chair, same as the Beldam. It's a hint that what the doll sees, the Beldam sees, they're connected.

Ms. Spink and Forcible are both right when they argue. With the tea leaves, Spink said there's danger, but Forcible said there's a tall handsome beast. The beldam is tall and somewhat handsome in her real form. With the stone, it's good for bad things and lost things. It was given to Coraline during a bad time when her parents go missing, and it helped find the ghost eyes. I didn't notice some of the other details like the pantone color and the pin cushions. That's awesome.

I'm not quite sure if it's been stated yet, but in the scene where Coraline first eats at the dinner table in the otherworld, the mashed potatoes and gravy on her plate resemble a skull at some point. Also, there is a moment when the Beldam mispronounces Coraline's name after she {Coraline} refuses to sew buttons in her eyes. The Beldam tries to "calm" Coraline by stating that it is her "decision" but she says her name as /Carol/-/leen/. I wonder if that is indicative of the Beldam's facade glitching, or her web unwinding because Coraline starts to see through the "spell" of sorts...?

No surprise that the Beldam is as ruthless towards her puppets as she is tricky and halfheartedly cruel to her prey. The Puppets don't actually "Eat" or starve and that is not the actual cruel part of it being placed on the other father, the part that is actually cruel to him is the fact that he is "Made" to think he is a real person, and so he is programmed to believe that he is wasting away for years apart at a time, in which he only have an idea what starving is like, and because he's been serving the Beldam for so long, that he does think he's real and starving man, on top of the fact that he is more of a dummy than the Beldam's other puppets, since he is the opposite of the more intellectually savvy Mr. Jones. That red-haired woman is not the Beldam, she is just some rando character talking on her phone, and the Beldam never uses a phone.

I have a theory that the doll faces we see in the Beldam's pincushion are Misses Spink and Forcible...and the other face we see is Bobinsky. I think everyone who lives in the Pink Palace, except for Coraline, is actually dead. Consider the use of color in the real world....everything is very dreary and washed out, including Coraline's parents. The house appears shabby and abandoned, with rotting food and no pictures. Coraline's parents seem very lackluster. The only bright pop of color and life in the real world is Coraline, herself. She is the thing that doesn't fit in that world. Then, she goes into the Other World, and everything is bright and colorful and a perfect reflection of Coraline's idyllic life (with good food, bright clothes and a perfect, loving family) and she is the one who stands out because she refuses to put buttons over her eyes.

We also have to consider that Coraline's mother had an accident and that her father, besides being sick, mentions having irritations on his butt. The last thing could be a joke or a sign that Coraline's father is presenting health problems that you usually have in old age. Wieby has scoliosis or suffered an accident (her parents are not mentioned) and her grandmother is very old. The town or village they moved to seems like a combination of many eras at once. It is possible that they are all dead, if we take as a reference the Russian neighbor who was possibly exposed to radiation. It is also possible that everything looks so desolate, sick and haggard to counteract the perfect world of the witch. In real life there is winter, poverty, illness, fatigue and old age. At the end of the film it seems that they are planting for spring, everyone seems to have a better appearance, so the situation of all has improved.

The little Blue boy with ice cream is wearing a sailor suit. And there's a little toy boat in the tunnel. Also, have you noticed that the well is quite far from the house? Wells were usually close to the house. And near the driveway, you can see a rock wall that looks like a remnant of a castle. Maybe a remnant of a time when fairies existed. One of the ghost children is a fairy. Ms Lovats sisters hair sticks up in the same way the ghost boys hair does. It's just pinned down on one side. There's a rat watching her from an empty apple basket on a table at the beginning of the film. The children say she stole their eyes, but they aren't eyes. They are just toys. Which they don't know because they've lost their eyes. One of the toys looks like the Pixar star ball. The cat tells Coraline she is meat. And the Belle Dame is always trying to fatten her up. Coraline never goes back in the tunnel. She just falls asleep in the other world. After the Belle Dame tricked her into eating, she trapped her like Persephone was trapped in the under world. The Ghost children pull a sheet up over their bodies like they do when a person dies. Wybies head cranked to the side so far makes me think he's been in an accident. He always looks guilty. I don't think the Belle Dame would paint a place pink ans call it the Pink Palace. I think that's the work of Spink and Forcible. Spink is an Old English word for a particular birds cry. As annoying as Coraline is, she may well have caused the car accident by distracting her mom. A deleted scene shows a spider crawling into Coralines moms cup. Then she takes a sip. Then the spider crawls out.

my favorite theory came from my insanely reilgious sister in law who said "the movie is an attempt to encourage children into witchcraft and worshipping demons". i asked her how that's the case when the "demon" in question is defeated in the end to the joy of all. she then admitted she didn't make it past the sisters performing because of their comically large busts, which she said was demeaning. i tried to clear it up for her and explain that these characters are hyperbolic in nature, therefore, body exaggerations fit perfectly with them. she of course disagreed and said something something "god" something something "sin" something something "witchcraft"

I have a theory...Coraline's parents knew about the beldame and what she would do to Coraline, but they couldn't do anything directly, they could only guide her, like when her mom told her to go tell her dream to spink and forcible she was guiding her to go and get the stone, and when her mom got really worried that Coraline would want to stay in the other world she insists its just dreams and locks the little door to make Coraline feel "safe" or when at the end of the movie when her parents return and have snow on there clothes they say there gonna celebrate there "garden catalog" but are actually celebratin' that Coraline saved them, survived the beldame.

Does anyone wonder how the beldam got the doll ball to make the doll look like coralline. It was in a different house. When wynee gave it to her. It already looked like her but he found it in a house beside the pink palace

What about when she says everyone has an other mother Was she telling the truth or lying to make Coraline feel better I know the answer sounds like it’s obviously to make her feel better or something but if not that would mean that there are more beldams out there

If the well is another portal to the other world then why is the hand trying to stop Coraline? If it is then wouldn't it just pushed her into the well than dragging her away?

Well there is a theory that Coraline's parents actually died in a car crash. In those parents are minions for the other mother

Can someone tell me..😊😊😊 1. How exactly does Coraline's mother know about the button key. 2. Is mother not locking the door on purpose? 3. There is no way for Coraline to escape from the other world, right. To come the real word, she has to wake up. 4. Is it possible that YB's grandmother was also trapped in the other world with her twin sister when she was young? Grandma must have survived. That's why she knows the story of seeing the sky from the well. 5. Is Beldam realy powerful? She only holding three children all this time, 🙄🙄🙄 6. What could be the window through which the doll is sent at the beginning of the story?

The food thing reminds me of Dracula. In the book, Harker never sees the count eat, drink or smoke. Well, not when Dracyla knows Harker is looking at him. In a way, the first 3 chapters could be a Coraline-like horror movie by itself, a slow burn where you begin to suspect there is something odd about this count fellow. But surely those poor Romanian peasants must be delusional… right?

The extra dolls in the beginning of the movie are probably the beldam's failed attempts. Considering those three characters are alive, and to some degree are aware of the beldam.

The bird wall paper could also b a call back to the bird wall paper amityville and the yellow wallpaper hamlet is also quoted in the trapeez scene as the two swing they give the speach hamlet uses to sarcastically describe the nature of humans indicating another taunt that like the scene of the other fathers song is hidden in plane sight indicating how sinister of a plot the beldam has for coraline while making sure the audience is too swept up in the fun of the moment to notice

Bobinski doesn't have a bed. That's why he's blue. He's dead. Spink and Forcible look dead too. From their skin, to their awful eyes. There are multiple candy dishes because they must feed each victim to trap them. And the slamming door sound at the end of the film is so ominous. Signifying that she is still trapped and in danger.
