Fun fact I recently learned that the dev of Iconoclast is the brother who directed the Shazam movies. Konjak actually appeared as an extra in th first Shazam and in the newest Shazam one of the kids is wearing an Iconoclast shirt.

I used to think pixel art is retro and lacks details as graphics kept getting more and more high resolution, but I rediscovered the pixel art type thanks to this channel and learned to see the beauty in it, pixel art can get really detailed and combined with beautiful color palettes we get the most enjoyable and lovely games to look at 🤗 thanks as always for your hard work 👍

Pixel art is like a painting; it ages far better than 3D models and CGI. You can still look at a 16bit era game and it looks amazing today; whereas if you look at a 3D PS1 game, it looks like garbage. Art style is very important in many ways; they age VERY differently.

I wish a Pokemon game was made in Eastward style. What I love about it is its so detailed and feels more real. Pokemon improved over the old pixel art generations but never looked as good and detailed as Eastward.

I think where some get turned off by the graphics or certain styles of game play is that they were not there for the birth of this style. It does not speak to them on the same level as someone who just got a NES or SNES for Christmas and they're slapping in cartridge after cartridge. This style pulls on those heart strings for some of us and reminds us the magic these game held. These games are amazing on the Steam Deck btw!.

I'm fairly sure that only the MC and enemies are 3d models in Dead Cells. The levels, setpieces, NPCs and all that are hand drawn.

Nice list (and I mean that sincerely), but none of these titles even comes close to the quality and artistry of the pixel art in Street Fighter III or Metal Slug. However, I for one am always happy to see pixel art getting some well-deserved love :)

I love pixel art games. I think the main reason is I was a SNES teen (I was 12 in 92 when my parents gave my a SNES). When the N64 was announced, I was excited, but when I saw the games, the excitement died because the games looked so ugly. Too much for then modern technology that it was not even able to make curves and circular shapes, something pixel games never had a problem with. It was not until Final Fantasy 7 that I accepted 3D models, but it was a game with pre-rendered background, so they looked nice every time, and not until Silent Hill 2, that I liked 3D environments as well. Modern games can make perfect spheres and curves, and very realistic stuff, but pixel art can do everything else! Songs of Conquest, Prodeus and Dead Cells shouldn't count, instead you might add them as special mentions or even make a top ten 3D/Pixel Art games (where Octopath Traveller should be mentioned as well). CrossCode: I'm one of the people who stopped playing the game because the puzzles. I got the game because the description says it's an action RPG, but it's more a puzzle game with some action combat and very little RPG elements thrown into it. Eastward: I played for 15 hours and stopped. I enjoyed the first three hours of play, but then i started noticing the problems, and by the 15th hour, I was no longer able to tolerate it. The child has a very annoying and toxic personality and the old man has no personality at all. The story is a mess and combat is terribly simplistic. But visually, sure, it's beautiful, specially the colors used in the ground, those different hues of green for the grass. Blasphemous: No doubt, the best Metroidvania game out there and absolutely a thrill to play and watch. For people playing for the first time, I suggest using Spanish voice-over because, being based on Spanish Catholicism, the language adds a lot of personality the English voices just do not. It was good wisdom to add Spanish voices even when on release it only had English voices. Voice-acting is expensive, and the success of the game allowed them to do a second voice. Spanish should have been the main voice, but they are not naïve, they know the majority of people speak English and never play games in languages other than their own (manifest destiny, anyone?) Chained Echoes: It looks good, but not as good as most of the games in this list. Are you sure it deserves first place?

Let just say I cried after seeing Alva soul's embracing Isabel and cried again after Sam's body slowly dissintegrate in John's arm and her soul saying goodbye.(Thank god they meet again in the future despite it is another clone of her.)

Vagabundork Chaos Magick-User - Good post! Dead Cells is prerendered 3D, you're right. I was also disappointed when the whole industry seemed to give up on pixel art just as it reached its apex in games like sf3... That game and Metal Slug have never been bested in terms of pixel art quality. Not even close... I need to give Blasphemous another shot. I do recommend Momodora Reverie.., great pixel metroidvania.

happy chained echoes was at #1. this game deserves it. The storytelling as well as exploring & combat feel great. Fighting regular mobs don't feel like a waste since they're just like a mini-boss. I'm super happy that i'm around 40 hours into the game and the game progress in the home screen shows i've only completed around 40% of the game. Now that's money well spent. Thanks for the video!

Eternal Castle Remastered is amazing art style. Touhou Luna Nights is impressive action effects! Katana Zero is similar awesome action effects. Chained Echoes throws the kitchen sink and entire house at you however! Amazing work there.

So happy to see Noita on this list, as it's my favorite pixel art game- not as much for the pixel art, as for the game play. Don't get me wrong, the game can be beautiful in it's own cruel little way, but the game play really does want to make you "Wipe the tears from your eyes and give it another go".

It's unfortunate for CrossCode that its visuals are detracted by all of those floating numbers in combat. Really, that goes for any game that has beautiful animations only to have the screen become so busy with a ton of information being actively thrown out.

@@ClemmyGames "Best looking" is probably highly subjective, but in no particular order here are 20 that I really like visually: Fez Celest Drainus Huntdown MO:Astray Phoenotopia Awakening The Tarnishing of Juxtia Rain World Tales of the Neon Sea Super Hydorah Record of Lodoss War Evoland 2 Inmost Mighty Goose The Textorcist Crossing Souls The Captain Super Time Force Ultra One Dreamer Transiruby I left out some game with NES sytle, but I absolutely adore the look of games like Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon and Cyber Shadow as well.

I was almost gonna be mad if Chained Echoes wasnt number 1...I have low expectation from the game...but I finished it but continued playing because I'm not done with the reward board & exploration...theres still a lot hidden quest you can do...I know Sea of Stars is coming soonish but Chained Echoes definitely grabbed my childhood and reminded me how great Chrono Trigger was truly a successor but we'll see how Sea of Star going to compete with the stories and gameplay mechanics

Good stuff here but I do prefer actual old school titles over the modern approximation because it was more reliant on the skill of devs maximising the incredibly limited resources available to them. For example, Space Invaders is beautiful to me, ditto with Pac Man and Bubble Bobble. It's not pixel based but IMO Asteroids is still one of the most beautiful games of all time and it's just black and white vector graphics.

0:25 I should have known I was being gaslit! 😭Before the game came out, I would have sworn that it was supposed to be a metroidvania, so when it finally did come out and it wasn't, I was confused, and wondered if I had a false memory or not. Turns out, I wasn't crazy after all. Honestly the game suffered from changing it into a non-metroidvania. The combat, level progression system, enemies, and level design, all lend itself to being a metroidvania game. It's still a good game though, but could have been so much better. A shame to be sure, maybe if they ever make a sequel, they could make it the metroidvania game it was meant to be.

I do have some annoyances with metroidvania genre that towards the end, when all map have been explored, when the game want to solve some puzzle or solve some quest there is always some triggers that is so miniscule from the rest of the landscape simply because there is too much repeated patterns which our brain already exclude. When i found the triggers I felt already done with the game. I stopped playing axiom verge towards the end because of this, can't finish iconoclast. Even if the game have more fun after enduring all that, u kinda know what will conclude as the end game, so i just move to other game rather than having a time not of fun.
