Agreed. I think the two of them work better as friends when it come down to the wire. Zuko and Mai make a much better couple, and while I still don't like that Zuko went against Iroh in the season 2 finale, I am glad that when he was welcomed back to the fire nation he was able to have time with her before he changed sides. If there was anything that they showed on screen between Katara and Zuko it was her natural sense of compassion and offering of friendship, which Aang also showed during the Blue Spirit episode when he got Zuko out of the fire nation army base after he was knocked out.

Zuko would be so much better husband for Katara than Aang. In the animaction. He didn't knows how to treat people! Even they also pass the hell in their lifes!!! Best examples : the engineer and his son Teo. He never even thank them after all things they help him!!! And what is even worse Aang never cared about Teo in his team! What a pitty that even Toph doesn't put in a good Word for him!!! Just thought about Zuko,Sokka and Aang! Even Aang never deserved for it!!! Best evidence is how he raised his children. Especially Bumi and Kaya. He was the worst main character in cartoon I ever seen!!! And back to Toph and Teo. I will always regret that they have only one scene together . Just for a while! They don't even say a word to each other! Teo was always in the shadow of Toph and her apperciation . That was cruel and heartbreak! They could be the best couple in the series!!! And got married in the legend of Korra. That would have much more sensem and showed Toph in better light. Particullary as a mother. I hope in the next season Netflix atla series the new creators change that. Same as they change the realctionship between Aang ,Sai( Teo's father name) and Teo. That's why I prefer Netflix atla series than animaction. Can't even watch it again. At least for now. I hope new creators don't break my heart later same as animaction creators.

Yes Katara and Zuko definitely had chemistry, but it never would have worked out. Zuko had to become Fire Lord as soon as the war ended, so where would that have left them? Does anyone believe Katara would have been happy to be queen of the fire nation? And there’s no way the fire nation would have accepted a queen from the water tribe either. And Katara was clearly always intended to end up with Aang. So yes Katara and Zuko had chemistry, but it wouldn’t have made sense for them to end up together.

@@sasha28957 I agree While I can see why someone would like Zuko and Katara to be a couple, I think it's better if they just remain really close friends. Aang and Katara were literally best friends throughout the entire series even through their rare bickering points. Meanwhile Zuko and Katara probably hard the worst chemistry at first and it was understandable, as Zuko betrayed her trust during a huge moment in Ba Sing Se. However, while their building a friendship arc towards the end of the series did rebuild their chemistry a ton, I think Aang is better with her, because they've always had each others backs, while if Zuko and Katara ended up together, I thought it would've been another cheap "sworn enemies become lovers" cop out.

Zuko and Katara very much should have ended up together. --- I watched the show while it was still being made and it should have happened with them together. I was so mad when she ended up with Aang. He was over 100 years older than her and still acted younger than her. I know he was frozen but a woman needs someone mature, levelheaded, or at least a good judge of everything(good and bad), and calm. Zuko later also saved her when he didn't have the safety of being able to go into an Avatar state when hurt. I am still very mad at this because, in Legend of Katara, they should have been dating or at least reconnecting. Edit after I read replies: Ok I get she was not being open to Zuko. But I just always saw Aang as being childlike while Katara was serious or resersed. So I never understood their pairing. And I thought that Zuko and Katara getting together would show how the 100 year war really had ended and the nations could cohabitate and flourish together.

Except it doesn't make any sense. Zuko simply doesn't have any traits that Katara likes in a man. Katara wants a man who is lively, bold and humorous. That's one of the reasons she had a crush on Jet before he showed his true colors. Zuko may be noble, but he has no sense of humor or fun. Everything is serious to him. He'd just bore Katara. Besides, as Fire Lord, Zuko has an obligation to choose a Fire Nation consort. It'd be really controversial if the next Fire Lord was a waterbender.

i think at first many of us wanted the aang and katara relationship but as we grew older it became apparent that aang was just a child in every sense. No it's not his fault he was frozen for so long BUT still; the fact the writers dedicated a whole episode to fans who made comments about Zuko and Katara and showed that there was SOMETHING there we were robbed. (Fun fact Toph WAS suppose to be a man from the depiction in the play as well, also I think aangs character in that play was on POINT)

@brittanycoolidge4101 Aang grew out of his childlike antics halfway through the series, that is the whole reason why Katara began to reciprocate him. Zuko would not be a good partner for Katara because he doesn't have any trait that Katara finds attractive. Sure, he's noble, but he's also humorless, everything is serious to him, he's pessimistic, he's dramatic etc. Zutara has nothing going on for it other than the fact that it involves an attractive guy and attractive girl. Aang is a much more complimentary partner for Katara. In fact, The Southern Raiders showed that Aang is more emotionally understanding and supportive of Katara, while Zuko encouraged her to give into hate instead of moving on.

He attacked her village as well as other villages. Attack the Ggang numbers of times just to kidnap Aang. And he's the reason why in Ba Sing Sa, Aang got struck by lightning from Azula in the first place. By stabbing Katara in the back. If it wasn't for Katara's healing abilities, then Aang wouldn't have come back alive. Dooming the rest of the world. And you really think after all of that Katara would want to be with him? Zuko had too many issues going on. And Aang was going through things do, but that didn't stop him from treating Katara well and being there for her when she needed it.

Zuko and Katara are not toxic…quite the opposite, their relationship develops healthily throughout the final season - whereas Aang and Katara’s relationship springs out of the blue (blue = 2-3 episodes, literally, in the whole series) without any foundation to stand on….even Sokka and Suki’s relationship has more bases than Aang and Katara’s.

And he was a kid who had now the whole responsibility of the world on his shoulders. That's too much for anyone to handle, especially a kid. And that didn't mean Aang wasn't her anchor of wisdom, too, when she needed it. It's was never one-sided. Aang gave the same support and attention to her. When he defended her when Pakku wouldn't train Katara waterbending. Supporting her when she acted as the painted lady. He taught Katara how to have fun again despite living in a war. Going penguin sliding and just having fun moments together is what developed their growth. And when he was going through emotional moments, she was there to help him through. Then, Aang did the same towards her with Katara's mom scene and other situations. Not wanting her to go on a dark path and destroy the good within her. What did really Zuko bring towards her? Other than agreed with her getting even with the soldier who took her mother's life. He chased her and the team for days in the first season, throwing firebending at them. And he betrayed her when they were in Ba Si Sa, the reason why Aang got struck by lightning from Azula. Spending days trying to heal Aang, not knowing if he was ever going to wake up. So why would Katara ever be considered with Zuko? When he almost killed the very person she cared about most. I'm not going to be with someone who almost cost someone I loved and cared for their life. And for the scene with Katara wanting revenge on the man that killed her mother, a true partner isn't always going to agree with you. Not out of personal beliefs but out concern and love towards their partner. Especially when they know who the person, and Aang has that right to say that. Zuko doesn't know her at all. Aang knows who Katara is. He spent every day with her, and who she is, is a caring and nuturing person. Who's always willing to help people no matter what. She gives hope to people around her. This is why he still allows her to take Appa and go on the journey, but begged her not to kill the man. Because if she took the man's life, it would destroy whatever good being she had in her. How many times we see people acting on revenge, ending up regretting, or ending up like the same person who wronged them. Even though Katara doesn't forgive the man, Aang still respects it. All he wanted was for her not to choose violence. THAT right there is someone who truly loves a person, not to blindly support whatever they do. You show support by being empathic but also giving your significant other meanful advice. And the journey could've been a risky move. What if the soldiers on the boat found them and surrounded them? Sure, Katara could bloodbend at the moment, but I'm sure she can't stop all fireballs flying at her in every direction. And would've given them away, risking the others to be found too. Someone who cares about you isn't going to let you take risky things when it could be harmful towards you. I personally never understood the whole thing with Zutara. It really shows me of a teenage romance fantasy rather than an actual genuine relationship. I mean, how many times does that stereotype relationship actually end up good in real life? We saw it through high school, sometimes in life, the girl trying to get the bad boy. But it ends up heartbroken afterward. You don't need heated tension to build something. It lasts for a moment but quickly dies down later. The people I know talk so much trash about Twlight and Vampire Diaries, yet ship stuff like this. I find it a bit hypocritical, to be honest. Such as Damon, he did so many people dirty, yet Elena still wanted to be with him. Ditching Stefen, who actually was a genuine person. Damon did so many bad things, killed people, and attacked Elena's brother. He even does his own brother dirty, but few I know still ignore that. Based on how attractive and cool he is. The same comments people had with Zuko. People want to get on Azula when Zuko is just as bad as her. This isn't me hating on his character from Zuko fans who accuse people of doing so. This is just the truth of his character. Yeah, he changed later on, but it still doesn't erase the things he's done. As said, people want to hold Azula accountable, but few neve did the same thing towards Zuko. In seasons 1 and 2, he was awful. He was so oppressed of capturing the Aang to gain back his honor. Not realizing how much it almost cost him. He attacked people, including the Ggang several times. He destroyed villages just to kidnap Aang. Betrayed Katara and almost been the one who cost Aang's life. Dooming the rest of the world. But some want him to be with Katara? After all of that? They had some similar issues and trauma, but that didn't require a relationship out of that. That's called trauma bond, and it helps no one. Another said, "Katara could be the reason Zuko changed for the better." But that's not her job to change him. And that's what their relationship would seem like. Katara is trying to fix him. Yet, shame and come at Mei for not attending to Zuko's needs. I mean, that's victim blaming. Mei had her own things going on. Zuko wasn't the only one who had issues. I thought it was ridiculous of people blaming her for the relationship being bad. When Zuko wasn't as great either. From the way he snaps at her from small things. So the blame shouldn't be on her. And why so? Because she wasn't coddling him every second? Something I feel like Katara would've done. Mei gave what Zuko needed, which was tough love. I'm sure she understood his situation, especially growing up with him. But it didn't mean he gets a pass to treat her badly. It doesn't give a pass to treat anyone horrible. And it's not her or Katara's job to fix him. If people want to change for the better, it's them who has to fix themselves, not other people. That only drains people's energy and comes them to burn out. And I think it's a toxic mindset few give to people. That's it's their duty to change others. That's how toxic relationships last longer than they need to be Aang had things going on for him to, but he was still there for Katara when she needed. They were there for each other. You can make a good friendship that grows and becomes a romance. And that's what seems like some people are missing with Aang and Katara. In the show, they would have always ended up together. Maybe they didn't show enough signs, but their priorities were to defeat the fire lord and end the war. Romance wasn't on anymore on the first top of the list. That's why at that scene at the fire nation play, Katara wasn't fully sure about what she felt. Because of everything that was going on. So when Aang kissed her, she backed off, and it showed it wasn't accepted. Then Aang regretted later. They didn't show them kissing again until the end of the show, when Katara first initiated it. It maybe had been little, but there were signs of their relationship development throughout the series.You should be with someone who's going to bring balance and peace. That will lift you up when you need them. And Aang always gave that peace towards Katara. As said, just because Zuko changed later on, it doesn't mean a relationship needed to happen.

Oh that one I agree with. I think they were a couple in one of the comics numerous bad futures, can't remember which one, they even have a daughter, Torrent. One episode of the original animated explored it in an alternate timeline, along with one deleted scene from Days Of Futures Past. But where they really should have explored it was X-Men Evolution. With them originally being the only two adults on the team and Wolverine not having a thing for Jean because she was a teenager in this version, the writers had the perfect opportunity to pair them up. It would have been so cute.

I was so salty that Katara and Zuko didn’t end up together. Their parallels and differences were literally perfect together. The fact that Zuko would’ve done everything to help Katara get revenge on the man who killed her mother in the Southern Raiders, and the fact that he literally freaking jumped in front of lightning to save her! Yeah, I don't think that situation requires a relationship. I don't feel like Zuko was actually helping her either. And let's not forget Zuko was the reason Aang got struck by lightning from Azula in Ba Sing Sa. He almost cost Aang his life. He maybe not been the one who shot Aang, but he was still part of. Aang could've literally died that day if the wound was too much. So, I don't blame her for not forgiving easily. If someone almost cost the person I cared about their life, intentionally or not, they need to do a lot for me to forgive them. And that's why I respect and like Aang a lot. He could've held a grudge for the longest, and rightfully so. Heck, killed him for that too. But he was peaceful enough to forgive him. Yeah, I agreed with Toph in that episode when Zuko wanted to join the group seeing the better picture. Aang needed a fire bender trainer. And the comet wasn't close behind, therefore, they didn't have time to search for a bender to teach him. However, that didn't mean Katara had to like or forgive Zuko so easily. And think some people were too insensitive with Katara for not trusting him that quickly. Especially when she trusted him first and looked where that did to the team. Nearly losing Aang. And frankly in my personal opinion, thought he was forgiven by her slightly too fast. When we see Zuko in the Ani Kai, jumping in front of Katara to block Azula's lightening, that should've been the moment of Katara to see him in a different life. Seeing how much he changed by willing to injury himself or possibly die just to protect her. Since season 1 and 2, he's given nothing but problems. Chasing throughout the first season trying to capture Aang. Attacked her village and threatened to harm the people she cared for. Attacked her numerous of times, which could've cause her to have serious injuries. Or even dead. And yet, somehow few people shipped them together? If Zuko truly wanted to make amends he should've respected Katara's choice. Whatever she chooses to forgive would've been her choice. Not his. So he didn't really get the right to complain about her not giving him a second chance. As in the first image, it stated Katara spent everyday with Aang while he was knocked out. Doing whatever she could to heal not even sure if what she was doing was helping. You know what that does to a person? Especially as young as Katara was. Not knowing if the person you care for deeply is going to leave or die. Zuko should've did what he was there for. Which was training Aang, and help out with the team if he needed too. That's how you make amends with people. They need to see your actions not just you're words. And taking her on dangerous journey to look for the man who killed her mother Kya, wasn't a good way to go about. Nor came off as genuine either. It seemed like he only went with her, so she wouldn't hate him anymore. Not considering how much damage that would've done had Katara did the deed. Yes, she was strong enough not to kill the man but we wasn't sure what would have happened. What if she didn’t? That's the whole point. We seen characters in the show willing to go to those lengths. Jet is the perfect example and looked what happened to him. And who would be the one to live with that? Knowing a life was stuck by your own hands. It wouldn't had been Zuko. At least Aang and Sokka gave meanful advice to help Katara. Not blindly support the situation. She didn't have to forgive the man, but all what Aang really wanted was for her not to repeat the cycle of violence. Because it wouldnt had change anything. Kya would still be dead and doubt she wanted her daughter to become a killer. For all Zuko known, the mission could've had gone wrong and both of them would've ended up capture. Risking the rest of the team being discovered. The whole Zutara ship can be toxic at times. It comes out like a typical stereotype bad boy vide that never works in real like. Aang was made for Katara. And just because you had a terrible childhood and faced trauma, doesn't mean you get a free pass to harm others. Nor is it forgiven so easily. It's that person's choice whatever or not to forgive the person that harmed them or the people they cared about. Out of everyone, Aang could've done same and raged on the fire nation for killing off his people. He could've had done damage to the sandbenders who stole Appa, the very last thing that connects to his people. Payed Zuko back for betraying him and Katara, allowing Azula to shot him in the back. Where he literally could've died if the wound was too much damage. Dooming the whole world into more suffering. And even after he sent a guy to track him down to killed him for good if he was still alive. He even couldn't killed the fire lord for causing pain and suffering towards everyone in the world, but found a solution and took his bending away. Letting the fire lord be worthless and nothing without it, rotting away in prison for the rest of his life. He always chooses peace over violence.

I mean, I’ve been a Zutara shipper for a while, I understand all the trouble that Zuko made for the group, but I feel like it was Katara that pulled him out of the darkness and into the light. Ok first off, anyone can like whatever they want, and they can ship who ever with whom ever they want, I don’t know if I used that right, probably not, but anywho, Zutara fans, let’s be real, no one was shipping those two characters the first season, people most likely started to ship them when ever they were in the cave and Katara was talking about healing his eye or it was most likely when Zuko was trying to act good and said, “Hello, Zuko here.” So don’t be saying that it was the original plan or it was going to happen, no it wasn’t, the creators did not intend to put them together at all, and we all have to except that reality, a reality that ended 10+ years ago, that’s still crazy to me, people are still arguing about this 10+ years later. I know this is a list of "should have been" couples, but as I watched others react to _Avatar: The Last Airbvender,_ (IRL and online) I'm still baffled by people thinking all of the way through the show that Zuko and Katara _would_ (not "should") end up together because: 1) the moment Aang sees Katara there is a connection by the hero towards the girl (albeit superficial), 2) The hero almost always gets the girl. 3) The lone hero almost always ends in a relationship with someone, and there was never anyone else of interest to Aang. 4-ish) Once Zuko had a girlfriend, (Mai) I couldn't see the show throwing her under the bus just to make Zuko-Katara happen.

i think you also forget that katara never saw aang that way for the majority of the series and the love hate relationship trope is always more interesting as both characters end up growing to understand each other on a deeper level. Also if he wasn't going to end up with her they only had Mai since the main focus was the original gang as well.

When I saw a few talk badly about Aang and ship Katara with Zuko, I never got it. In my circle of people, their arguments were always the relationship is one-sided, that Zuko was more mature than Aang, and age appropriate to be with Katara. And I guess to each their own, but people I know who brought those, I never saw them as logical way to justify Zutara. I thought the whole thing of Zutara was toxic. Something you would see out of Wattpad stories. A typical stereotype bad boy situation. I find that overrated. And in my circle, people are only shipping based on how edgy and cool Zuko is. Especially some girls I know. And it comes off as them having personal crush on Zuko themselves. Not seeing the benefit of Katara. Not seeing if that relationship would be healthy for her. Few people I know make iseemed like Katara and Aanwereas just the hero who gets the girl. Like Katara didn't have her own interests as well. But the show was based on Aang's story, so it makes sense to see things from his perspective. Even so, they still show little signs of Katara's feelings. Yes, I'll adimt they had awkward moments. But who never did when they were in middle school and high school? It was showing how they were feeling towards other. Also, half of Aang's life was stuck in the iceberg, and the other with the monks. So, who's going to have relationship skills after that? And it showed everybody's in the show awkward moments in their relationship. Not just Aang. A realistic thing that happens in young teenage relationships. Katara and Aang were made for each other. They brought out the best in each person. Yeah, she's one year older than him, but it's not a huge thing. It's not like 16 or 17 to 12, okay? There's real people who have that same age range. It doesn't remove anything in their relationship, so why should it be in this pair? Katara acted motherly sometimes, but that's how she was towards everyone in the group. After losing her mom, she became more mature than the rest at times. Especially living in a war, she grew up quickly, the same as her brother. So she had taken a lot of responsibilities in her village. That didn't mean Aang wasn't her anchor of wisdom, too, when she needed it. It's was never one-sided. Aang gave the same support and attention to her. When he defended her when Pakku wouldn't train Katara waterbending. Supporting her when she acted as the painted lady. He taught Katara how to have fun again despite living in a war. Going penguin sliding and just having fun moments together is what developed their growth. And when he was going through emotional moments, she was there to help him through. Then, Aang did the same towards her with Katara's mom scene and other situations. Not wanting her to go on a dark path and destroy the good within her. What did really Zuko bring towards her? Other than agreed with her getting even with the soldier who took her mother's life. He chased her and the team for days in the first season, throwing firebending at them. And he betrayed her when they were in Ba Si Sa, the reason why Aang got struck by lightning from Azula. Spending days trying to heal Aang, not knowing if he was ever going to wake up. So why would Katara ever be considered with Zuko? When he almost killed the very person she cared about most. I'm not going to be with someone who almost cost someone I loved and cared for their life. And for the scene with Katara wanting revenge on the man that killed her mother, a true partner isn't always going to agree with you. Not out of personal beliefs but out concern and love towards their partner. Especially when they know who the person, and Aang has that right to say that. Zuko doesn't know her at all. Aang knows who Katara is. He spent every day with her, and who she is, is a caring and nuturing person. Who's always willing to help people no matter what. She gives hope to people around her. This is why he still allows her to take Appa and go on the journey, but begged her not to kill the man. Because if she took the man's life, it would destroy whatever good being she had in her. How many times we see people acting on revenge, ending up regretting, or ending up like the same person who wronged them. Even though Katara doesn't forgive the man, Aang still respects it. All he wanted was for her not to choose violence. THAT right there is someone who truly loves a person, not go blindly support on whatever they do. You show support by being empathic but also giving your significant other meanful advice. And the journey could've been a risky move. What if the soldiers on the boat found them and surrounded them? Sure, Katara could bloodbend at the moment, but I'm sure she can't stop all fireballs flying at her in every direction. And would've given them away, risking the others to be found too. Someone who cares about you isn't going to let you take risky things when it could be harmful towards you. I personally never understood the whole thing with Zutara. It really shows me of a teenage romance fantasy rather than an actual genuine relationship. I mean, how many times does that stereotype relationship actually end up good in real life? We saw it through high school, sometimes in life, the girl trying to get the bad boy. But it ends up heartbroken afterward. You don't need heated tension to build something. It lasts for a moment but quickly dies down later. The people I know talk so much trash about Twlight and Vampire Diaries, yet ship stuff like this. I find it a bit hypocritical to be honest. Such as Damon, he did so many people dirty, yet Elena still wanted to be with him. Ditching Stefen, who actually was a genuine person. Damon did so many bad things, killed people, and attacked Elena's brother. He even does his own brother dirty, but few I know still ignore that. Based on how attractive and cool he is. The same comments people had with Zuko. People want to get on Azula when Zuko is just as bad as her. This isn't me hating on his character from Zuko fans who accuse people of doing so. This is just the truth of his character. Yeah, he changed later on, but it still doesn't erase the things he's done. As said, people want to hold Azula accountable, but few neve did the same thing towards Zuko. In seasons 1 and 2, he was awful. He was so oppressed of capturing the Aang to gain back his honor. Not realizing how much it almost cost him. He attacked people, including the Ggang several times. He destroyed villages just to kidnap Aang. Betrayed Katara and almost been the one who cost Aang's life. Dooming the rest of the world. But some want him to be with Katara? After all of that? They had some similar issues and trauma, but that didn't require a relationship out of that. That's called trauma bond, and it helps no one. Another said, "Katara could be the reason Zuko changed for the better." But that's not her job to change him. And that's what their relationship would seem like. Katara is trying to fix him. Yet, shame and come at Mei for not attending to Zuko's needs. I mean, that's victim blaming. Mei had her own things going on. Zuko wasn't the only one who had issues. I thought it was ridiculous of people blaming her for the relationship being bad. When Zuko wasn't as great either. From the way he snaps at her from small things. So the blame shouldn't be on her. And why so? Because she wasn't coddling him every second? Something I feel like Katara would've done. Mei gave what Zuko needed, which was tough love. I'm sure she understood his situation, especially growing up with him. But it didn't mean he gets a pass to treat her badly. It doesn't give a pass to treat anyone horrible. And it's not her or Katara's job to fix him. If people want to change for the better, it's them who has to fix themselves, not other people. That only drains people's energy and comes them to burn out. And I think it's a toxic mindset few give to people. That's it's their duty to change others. That's how toxic relationships last longer than they need to be Aang had things going on for him to, but he was still there for Katara when she needed. They were there for each other. You can make a good friendship that grows and becomes a romance. And that's what seems like some people are missing with Aang and Katara. In the show, they would have always ended up together. Maybe they didn't show enough signs, but their priorities were to defeat the fire lord and end the war. Romance wasn't on anymore on the first top of the list. That's why at that scene at the fire nation play, Katara wasn't fully sure about what she felt. Because of everything that was going on. So when Aang kissed her, she backed off, and it showed it wasn't accepted. Then Aang regretted later. They didn't show them kissing again until the end of the show, when Katara first initiated it. It maybe had been little, but there were signs of their relationship development throughout the series.You should be with someone who's going to bring balance and peace. That will lift you up when you need them. And Aang always gave that peace towards Katara. And that's my thoughts I wanted to say.
