A lot of people don't realize that until Michael Jackson in 93, the Half Time show was just filler. The NFL always assumed everybody went to the bathroom or got something else to eat and drink during half time, until 92 when Fox ran a live episode of In Living Color opposite the Half Time show and the ratings drop was so significant for that 30 minutes, some of the advertisers wanted their money back on their commercials. The NFL vowed that would never happen again.

Yes there was a wardrobe malfunction but in real time, it happened so quickly and from a distance that it was hard to tell what happened on TV. They also quickly cut away. But then it was shown over and over in closeup, it was all over the news, talk shows, etc. Absolute mountain out of a molehill, no pun intended.

A couple of things. The Super Bowl XXV halftime show would have been considered one of the worst halftime shows ever had it been seen live, but it happened during the.first Gulf War in Iraq, so instead of the live halftime show ABC had a special news report that aired instead, leaving the halftime show to be aired after the game was over, at which point most people had already tuned out. As for the Super Bowl XXVI halftime show, the then-fledgling Fox TV network suspected the halftime show would be lame, so they counter programmed the halftime show with a special In Living Color halftime show which managed to draw about a quarter of the Super Bowl audience away from CBS which was airing the Super Bowl that year. The NFL took notice of that and decided to bring Michael Jackson to perform the halftime show the very next year.

Regarding The Who, Roger daltrey had been recovering from vocal surgery about 2 months before and was nervous his voice could've given out during the performance as it was one of the first times he sang for a major audience since. Even with his age and recent surgery he still put on much stronger performance than many others had and still continues to perform with great energy to this day at nearly 80

I was in downtown St. Pete with my best friend at the time, my former girlfriend Kim. Hey, it happens. We were there to see George Clinton and P-Funk, but the show was cancelled. We ducked into a local bar and got a couple of drinks. By coincidence, the Superbowl halftime show was on. Prince was playing. He played "Purple Rain" in the rain.:)

The Aerosmith one wasn't cringy. A great song sung with some of the best artists of all time and it didn't look like anyone was phoning it it. (Grant it, this is the same super bowl that Ray charles sang America the Beautiful and the Backstreet boys having a mic or two cut off while singing the national anthem but digressing)

In 2004, I was working with several guys who weren't that interested in the game itself, but informed me that they were planning on watching the Superbowl because they had heard that Janet Jackson was going to flash during the halftime show. You can't tell me it was accidental. I personally heard (from coworkers) that it was going to happen over a week beforehand.
