Some of the finest fiction that I've read: "My Antonia", "Lolita", "An American Tragedy", "All the King's Men", "Last Exit to Brooklyn", 'For Whom the Bell Tolls", "Tropic of Cancer", "Age of Innocence", "A Passage to India." Yes, I readily admit I'm a bit of a slave to the Modern Library's Top 100 list.

I have read all or most of an abridged children's version of Black Beauty by Anna Sewell but I am in awe of these people who read 300 page or more novels and remember the storylines to them and characters in them for years afterwards, and do that for many novels! To me these people are geniuses!

Aldous Huxley made the most trenchant observation of Joyce’s ‘masterpiece’ I have read: “Ulysses is one of the dullest books ever written, and one of the least significant.”

Not a fan of Madame Bovary. "One life" by Maupassant is far superior in my opinion. Very similar but more precise

"Wuthering Heights strikes me in the same way as "Gone with the Wind". They are often included on "greatest" lists. Both are neither great, nor even very good. But "GwtW" has got to be the Worst American film ever made - aside from the icing there isn't any cake. A film about 2 con men - one of whom is a snake.

If you don't consider Withering Heights a masterpiece, I really think you didn't understand the book. And GWTW is one of the greatest movies ever made.,,😏

@@antoinemozart243 Great Film? I deserve a medal - I did watch the whole film so I know of what I speak: Wooden acting (cringingly bad). Silly costumes: A hoop skirt in a filthy hospital? Bare shoulders during the day. Do your research. And the hairdos? And Scarlet had time to paint on eyebrows? as she's running through a battlefield?? But that's nuthin'. "Tara had survived to face the hell of famine and defeat" What do you imagine slavery was? A spoiled brat loses a slave plantation and I should care?? Every negro acts retarded and I'm supposed to think they're cute. Huh?? Scarlett throws an infantile tantrum and runs out of the hospital in her hoop skirt because she don't wanna help when they saw off a man's leg?? And she gets the close up and the swelling strings to accompany her puerile conniption fit? Why make a movie about a woman like that? How can you make anything with a vacuum where the concept of quality should be - or even the most rudimentary concept of taste? The black soldiers are proud because "we diggin' fa da souf Miss Scahlit". . "We fightin' fa da cawse" Ah WHAT?? No. Didn't happen that way. Another Disney male fantasy - just sicker than most. And the idea that any male would be attracted to a shrill, infantile, nasty, manipulative, silly, self-centered little narcissist. A valley-girl on steroids. Feel sorry for such a little snake? I care about people who actually recognize that the world exists apart from themselves. But what stopped me cold was when Scarlet beats to death the horse that just saved her life. Juvenile tantrum? Nope - a psychopath. Why make a movie with soaring strings and epic suffering about a psychopath? Why make a nostalgic film about the noble South fighting to keep slavery? Would the Germans make such a film about the concentration camps? And Rhett Butler?? Because he recognizes himself as a cynical racketeer he's cool? Throw in a few witty lines and he's cute? "I'm in it for mahself". Yeah - the strong silent American dude who doesn't give a shit for anyone else and when he winks at suffering wid a smirk and offers ya a quarter you'll think maybe "He's not so bad??" Yuck. And The DIALOGUE?? "Oh jus looka ma hands! Ya could allus tell a lady by ha hands", "Oh I guess things like hands jus doan matta anymore." "Hey 'SLAP' doan eva talk 'bout Tara dat way." Good God. And the Southern accents? Make me gag. "Came marching back to the desolation that had once been a land of grace and plenty". Ah yup - unless you were a slave - which was a LOT of people. And Americans think this is their "greatest" film? I guess that explains Trump.
