I've had several outstanding Akita's and was blessed with their presence in my life. I have one left now, she's 12 and I love her. Unfortunately, because of my age and health I can't properly take care of or train a puppy again. I will forever have an empty spot in my heart for all the Akita's that I had the great fortune to live with.

Hi Rick, after raising Akitas for over two decades, I understand where you're coming from. I often wish I could start a special rescue for senior Akitas. They deserve the very best quality of life- even when older. The problem is their lifespan (we were fortunate - 10-13 years) but they still don't live long enough. I would love to help abandoned seniors, but my heart breaks every time we lost one of our special dogs. I hope your sweety has at least a few more great years to spend with you!

We have a 4 year old male and our older female just passed few weeks ago. I’ve had many Akitas, an as I age I’ve begun to cherish all the moments I have with our four year old male. Might be my last. This breed has changed my life in so many wonderful ways.

My Akita is a gentle sweetheart. She's over 3 and even though she won't get along with some dogs when they get together (however, she does have her friends), she loves all people and toddlers too. She adores them. So cute 🥰

I am crazy about my Akita Samurai. He's very dominant and can get aggressive but he's a big baby with me. He's 4 yrs old and very big. My vet says he has the biggest head on a dog she's ever seen. He's an American Akita and I waited a long time to get one, I've loved them for years. Not made for people with no dog handling experience. They will get pushed around big time lol.

Just an interesting fact: yes soldiers from WW2 brought back some of these special, incredible dogs. The first two Akitas known in the states were brought here direct from Japan to be seeing eye dogs/companions to Helen Keller as an honored gift from the Japanese government. The first pup died in quarantine, the second was sent to her from the same litter as the first, and lived a full life.

My akita is my best friend. Hes almost 6 now. And still follows me around like a shadow. He has free roam of the house and when i go to sleep. He likes to sleep at the bottom of my bed or on the floor next to my bed. Theyre so gentle ofc not so much to strangers but why would they be? You have to earn their trust! I hate the fact they have a bad reputation, its how you raise them! These dogs are amazing treat them with nothing but love and they will love you back 110%. Akitas arent very needy so when they want your attention dont ignore them they also have very selective hearing are stubborn and heavily food orientated lol.

I live alone and have always wanted to go for walks, especially in the evenings, but feel it’s risky considering where I live (I live in a large city). I’ve also wanted an American Akita all my life. I’ve done a lot of research about this breed. I would like to think an Akita would protect me if we’re out walking and a bad stranger or aggressive animal tried to attack me.

There was no "years of American Akitas interbreeding to get larger Akitas." This is a palpable false statement. The "Japanese Akita " is not remotely the venerable Akita. The first Akita in the United States was a gift from the Japanese government to Helen Keller. It already had all the size needed and was never cross bred for size and the increased size accepted as a standard for the breed. Get your facts straight. The so called Japanese Akita is not an Akita. The Japanese government did not give a false Akita to Helen Keller. That's a ridiculous claim. There are other facts to numerous to go into here.

These facts are invented. The American Akita was not formed by American breeders. The first Akita in America was given to Helen Keller and was the so called American Akita. American Akitas were in Japan before they ended up in America The Japanese breed the dog to be bigger for fighting before they outlawed Akitas fighting This is why the other dog was created (can't remember the breed offhand) the mastiff

No, it wasn’t given by the Emperor of Japan. For those Akita lovers in U.S, I want to inform you the fact regarding Helen Keller and Akita. In 1937, when Helen Keller was 57 years old, she visited Japan for the lecture tour. she visited many places in Japan including Akita prefecture . When she was in Akita prefecture, she asked reporters whether it was possible for her to obtain an Akita dog for the friendship between U.S and Japan. Ichiro Ogasawara, a local police officer, heard Helen wanted Akita and offered her his 75 days male Akita puppy. The puppy name is Kamikazego. Unfortunately the puppy died 2 months after he had arrived in U.S at her house because of diphtheria(he didn’t die in quarantine). Ichiro Ogasawara heard the death of Kamikazego and this time again was willing to give her another Akita he owned. The name of Akita is Kenzango, 3 years old male, a brother of Kamikazego. Kenzango spent rest of his life with Helen for about 6 years after he arrived in U.S. This is a true story of Akita brought into U.S by Helen Keller. This story is very famous here in Japan and there are so many newspapers articles and photos about Helen and her first and second Akita dog which we can still read today.
