Switching to LED lights will help with your charging other devices. Halogen and filament bulbs use twice the power. Older bikes can be converted to them without much trouble. Turn signals use less power as they are not constantly on, the headlight is the big energy consumer. During the day I ride with the high beams on. It will not blind anyone as their eyes are adjusted to the sun, but the higher beam angle will let you be seen by others better.
@LunchCutterProductions Жыл бұрын
It never crossed my mind to swap the headlight to LED, that's a great idea! This bike also had auxillery LED fog lights which definitely helped me see better but were very battery intensive. High beam is also a great idea for extra visibility, thanks for the great tips!

I have ridden a motorcycle to all 48 states, some of them many times. The only motorcycle I rode to all 48 states on was a 1997 Kawasaki Vulcan 750, which I bought new. I still have it. It now has over 118,000 miles on it, and is still running great. Had to pull the engine out once to replace the stator. My dream was to ride to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, but I was never able to find the time. I am now 64 and partially disabled, so I won't be riding there. Still thinking about going, maybe in a Jeep. I started riding on the street at age 16, and have ridden around a million miles on about 50 different bikes. One of them was a black 1988 Suzuki Savage 650. I remember having several flat tires on that bike. I live in the Arizona desert, and we have a kind of thorn here called a goathead. Flat tires are kind of a way of life here with tube type tires.

When I was young, (about 40 years ago), I did a cross country trip on a motorcycle. I fastened my sleeping bag to the handlebars. It deflected the wind like a windshield would. I found it more comfortable not to wear undershorts. The seams at the bottom of the legs would feel like I was sitting on ropes after riding all day. They also held perspiration in, (without them the sweat would go to the pants and evaporate quicker). Sitting directly on the seat also caused a wet bottom from sweat. A sheepskin seat cover helped greatly and also offered more padding. A cheap rug likely would have worked as well. A waterproof cover was used over the seat at night or if it was raining. My seat had sewn seams and if I sat on a seat that had absorbed water from rain or even heavy dew, the water would squeeze out through the seams and wet my pants when I sat on it. I would ride for 3 hours then take a break. Ride 2 hours, take a break, then another 2 hours of riding. After that, every hour of riding take a break. 500 miles a day on a bike was plenty. Some States have lots to see, Others are just space to cover.

I'm about 4 months late on this but you can substantially increase the life of zippers by putting a thin light coat of wax on them. Acts as a lubricant without collecting dirt and dust. Just take a room temp tea candle and gently rub the solid chunk of wax along the zippers. Reduces wear and snags substantially.
@LunchCutterProductions3 жыл бұрын
Oh wow the real pro tips are in the comments!!!!! I hope people see this. Do you have to warm the candle at all, or just pull it out of the packet and rub it on the zipper? I'm going to do this with my motorcycle jacket as well as my tent (which is the worst offender)
@PracticalTacticalSheepDog3 жыл бұрын
@@LunchCutterProductions nope solid room temp wax, you don't want the build up you would get if the wax was warm. All it takes is a super thin layer, usually so thin you can't even see it but you can feel it. Apply it to the track of the zipper and then work the zipper back and forth a few times

I use the Rode Wireless Go microphone and it works great (cost around $200) but if you have a newer go pro you need the adapter as the newer cameras don’t even have a microphone input without the media mod.
@LunchCutterProductions2 жыл бұрын
What adapter do you need? Is it waterproof? It's so weird how it's only compatible with old go pros :(
@themotorcyclegene2 жыл бұрын
@@LunchCutterProductions If you have a Go Pro that is 8 or later you will need the Media Mod, which is water resistant but not water proof. To use the media mod you have to remove the battery door and then the GOPro slides into the media mod and plugs into it. The Media mod has a built in microphone as well as a microphone input and a usb-c plug in. I rode in 3 hours of heavy rain using a GoPro Hero 8 with the media mod and didn't have an issue, but the camera is not submersible with the media mod. Basically, there is no way to make a GoPro both completely waterproof (submersible) and have an external microphone. I agree that they should have a bluetooth microphone option, but they don't so the media mod is the best I can do. The problem with using adapters instead of the media mod is it leaves a large place for water to get in, and while the media mod is not perfect it is at leas useable and I have not had any issues with my GoPro drowning in the rain while using it. Hopefully that helps.

Kia ora! I would love some advice about adverse weather. What if its raining when you arrive or leave camp? Even if its nice weather, your fly might be covered in dew? Do you wipe it down, strap outside the bike? If you pack your tent and fly together, won't the dew just make the whole tent wet? That kind of stuff..

Good questions!! With regards to packing up my tent when it's still wet, I give it a good shake down and then fold it with the wet side of the fly folded inwards. That way when I roll it up with the base, the wetness is contained to only the fly (does that make sense?). Then it dries the next night when I set it up. If there is heavy, unrelenting rain extending towards the end of the day then I'm not shy about getting a motel and drying all my clothes out at a laundromat. I also unpack my tent and dry it in the room next to the heater. If there is no motel then I try to set up under a shelter of some kind. Sometimes there are picnic shelters on the side of the road or even a canopy of trees will work. I have a one piece rainsuit and tingly overboots to wear while it's raining and I'm on the bike. Only thing I haven't found is a really great pair of waterproof gloves

@@LunchCutterProductions Thanks for the ideas. For gloves, you could try Dainese Nembo gloves. I've worn them on a couple of trips in some pretty awful weather and my hands have stayed comfortable so far. They're warmer than straight leather gloves, but aren't winter gloves. They're also not super thick like many winter gloves are. Goretex based.

It would be helpful to name brands or shopping list. I was trying to find the hydro pack and can’t figure out which one you’re using. Great video otherwise!

I did include a list of the items in the description! The exact hydrapak I have is no longer available but the newest version is just as good (just a different colour). www.rei.com/product/190151/hydrapak-3l-seeker-collapsible-water-container-100-fl-oz

@@WittyWisdomRider no worries, I didn't have most brands or stores I bought them in (Amazon mostly fyi) listed so it's a fair point. Where are you headed on your trip? I'm setting off on a trip end of Sept!

Roll top water proof bags, no zips. 👍 Those chairs though. Great if 100kg or less. Once you get up 120kg+ they are just a funny video waiting to happen. 😄. 🏴

You needed links for the gear you are showing. 3litre is not enough info for me to go out and buy the hydrapack.

Yeah I probably should have, but I didn't want people to think I was "advertising" products for the affiliate kickbacks. I've got the items listed in the description and hopefully google does a good enough job :p Yeah the 3L Hydrapak is my day drink bottle, but I also have an additional camelback bladder in my saddlebags as backup + cooking. Not sure that the Hydrapak goes bigger than 3L but they are so convenient and durable

you need a good battery but you need to see what your electrical load is because on some motorcycles they don't produce enough amps to charge and run everything great video

What about heated gloves? They will keep your fingers warmer than heated grips and can be powered by their own batteries or can run off your 12v bike system as you ride.
@LunchCutterProductions3 жыл бұрын
So I DID have heated gloves but they only lasted a max of 2 hours! They also were not technically rated as safe motorcycle gloves protection-wise....perhaps there are better brands out there than the ones I had? I absolutely wish I had sorted out a way to wire up my gloves (and other gear) to my battery.....this is the real pro tip!
