the istari (wizards) were Maia sent to endor (middle earth) with them being barred from using their true powers. Gandalf violated this when he fought the Balrog (another maia). Sauroman had his powers stripped due to turning traitor. As gandalf the white, gandalf was stronger than when he was the Grey wizard, but not as strong as his true power. or at least that's my interpretation. No human has ever matched a Maia in Tolkiens works, not even Beren or Hurin.

This isn't necessarily true. The Balrog's were on equal footing to Sauron before he made the One Ring. He was a powerful Maia, but not the overwhelming force he became after he made the ring. The Witch King of Angmar was on equal or nearly equal footing as Gandolf the White in the books -- he became more powerful the longer the ring was in existence. He was probably stronger than Durin's Bane at the end of Return of the King. Not to mention, the Witch King couldn't be harmed by any weapons outside of special, crafted, enchanted weapons made by Dunedain and Elves and he was immortal as long as the ring was in existence.

I believe Gandalf (or rather Olórin?) is the most powerful one of them all. That’s simply because there are really only 3 most powerful beings, if talking only about the movies. That’s of course Sauron, Gandalf and Lady Galadriel (+ maybe Saruman but he became kinda weak when he betrayed). Lady Galadriel, doesn’t matter how ancient or whatever she is, she is is still "just" an elf. Gandalf and Sauron are, on the other hand, Maiar - "right hands" of Valar ("gods" of Middlearth). And here comes the magic. The wizards were sent directly into Middlearth by Valar to face Sauron, so it’s pretty logical that they chose the most powerful Maiar to do it. There were 2 at the beginning, which were Saruman and one of the 2 blue wizards mentioned in the Hobbit movie. They both chose one "sidekick" or whatever (Saruman chose Radagast, who, I don’t understand why isn’t even on the list), but Valar wanted one more, so they asked Gandalf, or Olórin, as he was called in Valinor. But he didn’t want to go. Becasuse he was AFRAID of Sauron. See? The power comes from wisdom. And fear is significant for it. The wizards, however, lost most of their power when entering the Middlearth, so he is probably not as powerful as Sauron in the Middlearth. + Sauron had most of his power concentrated in the Ring, because he just couldn’t handle it himself for a simple reason - it wasn’t his, it was gave him by the first dark lord Morgoth. MIX3R I agree in many things. Such as why isn't Radagast on the list and that Gandalf is much stronger when he isn't in Middle-Earth. But i disagree in one thing. You can't just say that Galadriel is "just" an elf. You said that power comes from wisdom. Well tolkien describes Galadriel as one of the most smartest beings in Middle-Earth. And you're wrong... Ancient does count at this psrt since Galadriel has seen so much things and have been through alot of pain ( like how Melkor killed her Grandmother ) and this teaches. Life teaches. And she is smart. She's powerful as well since of her ring AND her rare power - Mind Reading. The only one with that power in Middle - Earth. Galadriel IS STRONG and only a fool would deny that. It is also said in the third LOTR book that Galadriel with her ring is so strong that only Sauron himself would win her in a combat. She also destroyed Dol Guldur COMPLETELY.

AND she has one very very rare ability - Mind Reading. Galadriel is more powerful than Gandalf. I haven't read the books so I didn't know that, I made this list movie based. But Saruman isn't near his full strength when he's on middle earth, same with Gandalf and other wizards.

Pls, do say where did you read that? Beacuse i read all of the books, and saruman while not a fighter was still insnaly powerfull. His voice alone could break the will of WitchKing. So pls say where did you read, Saruman THE MAIA could not take 1 single nazgul? XD

Thranduil didn't help the dwarves it's bcz he doesn't have the courage honesty like the rivindell elves do but legolas does and that's what makes him better than his foolish father who turned away his people from danger
