The British Isles have so much in a days journey from any point. The scenery is green and beautiful with beautiful sea cliffs on all sides. You can tour historical sites going back to the Neolithic, or literary sites from Shakespeare or Jane Austen, to movie locales. I like that the focus of your videos is the place itself and not "we stayed here, we ate here" etc.

Some great pictures and a beautiful showcase for what these islands can offer. Ive lived here all my life and not been to half of them. Some additional places id highly recommend. Hadrians Wall in the north of England is simply breathtaking. St Andrews is one of the prettiest towns in Scotland with beaches, a castle and of course golf. You did well to cstch Ireland with the sun out... And Skye when the clouds arent 3 feet off the ground. But both are spectacular regardless of the weather.

I'm English. But these isles are normally referred to as "The British and Irish Isles" in this context. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, the Republic of Ireland is Ireland. @msmissy6888 A false equivalence. And it's not up to BritNats to tell us what we can and cannot find offensive and blithely tell us it is "correct". And its always the BritNats who unconvincingly insist it is just a "geographical term" and is "correct" that are always the most politically motivated to use this ugly colonial term.

Nice video. But the term 'British Isles' is not an official geographical area, it is an antiquated term from over a century ago prior to Ireland gaining it's independence, and it is quite offensive (or at the very least very annoying) that Ireland is referred to as a "British" Isle given the difficult history between the two islands. You should call this video 'Top 25.....in Britain and Ireland'. Apart from the title, great video....

@paulburgess283
@paulburgess283 Жыл бұрын
@@michaelking9772 This doesn't really make sense. Of course if you are from Northern Ireland and consider yourself both then great. However for many people from the Republic it can be a reminder of the grabby nature that was the British empire and all the negatives and oppression that went along with it. It was never simply a geographical term and lumps an independent nation under the banner of its former oppressor, and still suggests at dominion. While it doesn't really bother me like many others, I can understand where they're coming from. It really makes no sense in modern terms for anyone to keep using it. It's not like Britain and Ireland or The UK and Ireland is much more demanding to say. If nothing else it is factually incorrect, with there being absolutely nothing british about 3/4 of the particular island in question and the other 1/4 being part of the UK, not Britain. Its a term that could only ever cause division.
@kieran5188
@kieran5188 Жыл бұрын
@@michaelking9772 well the fact that you refer to yourself as Irish and British obviously indicates that you've no issue with Ireland being referred to as a British Isle. For all of those in Northern Ireland who don't think of themselves as British - but just Irish, and for all us who live in the south (which isn't British)....the idea of being referred to as British, or living in a British Isle is offensive. You're from the same island so I'm guessing you can understand that. My view is not blinkered..... I'm just pointing out to the guy who posted the video (who obviously isn't aware of the island if Ireland's complicated history) the meaning of the term British Isles.... It's a stupid outdated term, it isn't an official term, so it's odd that some people still use it. Some people would consider it odd that you consider yourself British and Irish (I'm not one of them), you are what you are....no skin off my nose! Don't appreciate your snide comment though.....quite obtuse on your part to not understand how many dislike (if not quite offended by) the term....

"British" is not a nationality, despite its widespread use as such. Nor is "Great Britain" a country - It's a geographic term for the largest Island off the north coast of France and the "British Isles" is the name of the entire archipelago Strictly speaking "British" means "a person or thing originating on the Island of Great Britain or in a broader sense, the British Isles. "The correct term for the nationality of someone from - say, London, or Swansea or Dundee is "Citizen of the United Kingdom". In summary, "British" or "Britain" does not designate ownership or nationality when used correctly - as here - as a geographical term, so being offended is pretty silly.

Interestingly enough, you’ve been traveling to Ireland and you haven’t learned the difference between British Isles and the island of Ireland, which is not part of the British isles. Both governments agreed it was a colonialist term and they wouldn’t use it. That’s why it’s a United Kingdom, and Northern Ireland. Great Britain and Ireland British and Irish isles It’s amazing that you didn’t learn anything about the Irish

@@RyanShirley It's all good, I wasn't criticising! One tip to help with quite a few places would be that the "mouth" in places like Plymouth (pronounced plih not ply) or Portsmouth is pronounced like the double o in words like book or good, not how you normally pronounce the word mouth. You nailed the pronounciation of Edinburgh to be fair. Very rarely do I hear an American get that one right so good effort!

@@RyanShirley Manchester and Liverpool are thriving cities. Cresswell Crags in Derbyshire is geographically unique and has prehistoric caves with cave art (you may have to book visits to those separately). The North York Moors are beautiful and have stunning scenery to visit. Walking along the Pennine Way from Derbyshire to Scotland is worth it too. Formby Beach near Liverpool has prehistory and modern history plus a forest reserve. Try all those!

Not really, Ireland isn’t as famous, large or populated as Britain. Also pretty sure Britain was found and named first, it makes sense that the largest and most famous island would represent the whole “isles”. Don’t know why you Irish get your knickers in a twist over this.
@maxdavis7722
@maxdavis7722 Жыл бұрын
@@imastaycool what? Didn’t even say I was from England. You shouldn’t be proud of terrorist attacks, quite pathetic. The term British isles has nothing to do with the British empire, it’s derived from the name Britain which is a name given by the romans. Nothing to do with ether empire, no one cares about the empire over here. The term isn’t used for Ireland it’s used for the whole archipelago, our term for Ireland is either “ireland” (the geographical one) or “republic of Ireland” (the nation). I don’t see how it’s a politician term, it’s completely based off of a geographical term, no politicos involved. The UK does not use the term British isles to refer to the UK related territories, it uses the term to refer to the UK, Ireland and the three crown dependencies. You don’t actually give any reasoning for why you should be annoyed about this geographical term. It seems you Irish are just looking to be annoyed at this point. Ultimately it’s a widely recognised name that is based on ancient geographical terms, it’s not anything offensive or even targeted at the Irish.
