Hi Mat. I was building a system that needed to count pulses on multiple (4) inputs. Initially I tried to marry a Rasp Pi Zero (running the system) with a Pico (to count the pulses) but found that the Pico Python libraries did not support the Pico being a slave. So I switched to a Arduino Nano Every. It was easy to implement a sketch using the I2C protocol. But I had to use the online IDE with a Linux laptop as I could not get my Windows 7 PC to correctly install a USB-Serial driver. One thing I found is that some Nano models only support 3 GPIO pins with interrupts. Fortunately the Nano Every has interrupts on all digital pins. I don't know if the Arduinos are sensitive to static but I lost one and at £10 each + p&p they are almost 3 times the cost of a Pico.

How frequent were the pulses and how quickly you needed to update your Zero?

@@notenoughtech Frequency depends on PV generation, consumption and purchasing (the 3 meters). I'm not expecting more that 1/sec on each (=3.6kWh). Frequency of update is fully configurable as is frequency of analysis/decision making and loads of other parameters. I'm starting at 4min/12mins but might drop to say 1mins/3mins. Loads of stats being produced which will be sent by MQTT to an existing Rasp Pi 4 for storage (InfluxDB and Grafana) so I can tinker with the config. settings.

And serial communication wasnt sufficient for that or just pain to implement? The data you mentioned seems perfectly reasonable.

Hi Mat, super interesting. I am looking for a tutorial long time for people counting and occupancy heat map stuffs using nodered and ble, I couldn't find anyone who can share and teach on this. Hope u r able to do this and I know u r super good in nodered... I believe many people like it.

From similar topics I have one that could spark your interest which is called "who's home". It uses WiFi to report presence at certain locations which may not be what you are after but that's what's I have done for now in that direction

@@notenoughtech can wait to see that happen, that's make an idea some social distancing solution, if too crowded in that particular room.

2 laser trip wires would be cheaper and require no participation for room counting if that's what you want to do but doesn't have info about who was in the room

Thanks. Great video as usual. Try to make a video about small boards with ethernet built in for people who do not trust wifi ;-)

Ha! I don't think I even own one. Which is surprising for a person with a WiFi black hole iny office 😭😭

I have a pretty cool clone called a Diavolino. It has flames on it!

Ha. Everything with flames is probably 5 times faster ;)
