I started reloading ammo about 10 years or so ago. I built up a pretty good supply of what I thought was important at the time, mainly using range brass. So I've been pretty well immune to the ammo shortages and price gouging for a long while. Yesterday and today, I got a SCHOOLING! I bought a new "toy" last year and had a few rounds for it, but finding food to keep feeding it was pretty hard. Since it was just a toy that I'd carry once in a while I didn't pay it much mind. I'd just casually buy a box here and there when I saw it on the shelf. It became my daily, but I have yet to take to a "Range Day" where I'm well known to spend the entire day and sometimes a few thousand rounds. It usually takes me 4-5 days of reloading to recover my ammo stock. Between yesterday and today, I spent more on boxed ammo than I have in many years! Then I looked around at other prices.... BUCKET O BULLETS $100, 50 rounds of the caliber I'm looking for $62, 20 rounds of a caliber that I reload $65, and my powders and primers are easily triple the price now! HOLY COW! Today really hurt, but it's a one time pain for only a little while anyhow.

At age 65 I think I have bought my lifetime supply of ammo -- with enough to go to a range a few times every year and still have "plenty" if the country tried to repeat the summer of 2020 and go worse than that in terms of violence. We don't have air conditioning given our climate so sometimes the house can get over 90 degrees in the summer, including the ammo, but that's just how it is.

We catried the same rifled as the other guys do ammo resupply was on the ground after a fire fight. This was 50 years sgo. I was thinking 500 rounds would be enough. For a fighting rifle I might go 1000 rounds. Remember after a fire fight it is likely the other guy is using the same caliber as you are. If not you just take his firearm and ammo. Take both anyway so no one else can get them to use on you. Yes I have a lot more ammo than that. For years I shot NRA service rifle so I have a lot of match 5.56 ammo. Green tip ammo is poor ammo to store. 4 inch 100 meter groups is all it has to shoot to be accessible. It also is designed to wound. A good 60 to 65 grain expanding bullet is way better. It only becomes too much when your living space begins to actually look like an authentic warehouse storing the stuff. The best deal I've come across was in 2021, oddly when the Wu Flu shut us all down and ammo prices jacked up. A flash sale email popped up advertising 250 rounds of Sterling 12g Tornado Slugs for $120, free shipping. You bet I put an order in. They showed up in a few days and my AR-12 went "omnomnom" like a fat kid with candy. Late April 2020 was the last time I managed to get 1000 rounds of Blazer aluminum 9mm for $180, just $10 more than what it used to cost. This was like the "I'm bailing out!" reaction before things got out of hand. They suuuure did. So, yeah, not much of a problem stockpiling until it becomes a hazard or obstacle like a hoarder's home.

Spending - Always look for the best deal and don't spend more than you can afford. Always consider shipping and other fees when buying online. (At least one online retailer adds an additional fee for buying ammo.) Depending on where you live, you might need to take into account any FFL fees should you be required to have ammo shipped to an FFL. Better deals are usually found when buying in bulk. If that is not feasible then as said here, when you buy a box of ammo, just buy two. Use one, store one and slowly build your stock. And yes, have both your quality ammo and your plinking ammo. Quantity - How much ammo do you need to stock in order to feel comfortable? I keep a decent stock that I replenish as needed. I don't hoard and I don't just keep buying, buying and buying. However, should I happen to come across a great deal I'm smart enough to not pass it up. I store enough ammo so that if there is a hiccup in supply or price then I am pretty much unaffected. I go shooting without worrying about available supply or price. Stocking ammo is much easier if you don't have to stock 47 different calibers and variations. Yeah, you'll want some FMJ and some JHP and a few other variations, but no need to go hog wild (unless your wallet is deep). I don't believe in buying a certain amount of ammo for each rifle. What if I have 20 rifles that shoot 5.56? I'm supposed to stock 20,000 rounds of that caliber? No. Neither would I be comfortable with just 1,000 rounds for those 20 rifles. I stock my ammo based on how much of each caliber I'm comfortable having and not on how many rifles I have that shoot any one caliber. However, I have more rifles that shoot 5.56 than I do 45LC. I stock more 5.56 than 45LC. Storing - Most of my ammo is actually stored in a safe. The safe is in the same house I live in. As said here, if I'm comfortable then my ammo is comfortable. Oh, and when make a new purchase I rotate stock. *My preparation goal is very simple. Have enough ammo on hand so I don't have to contend with constantly fluctuating prices and availability* . By achieving that goal, I'm prepared pretty much for the zombie apocalypse, a shtf scenario or any other self defense situation.

remember you do not NEED large amounts of defense ammo to defend from multiple attackers, yes there are obvious reasons to use it, .... but target ammo will do the job just fine in most situations, and maybe even preferable in some (think light body armor for instance, hollow point get stuck, cheap fmj or other more simple target ammo penetrate just fine, lighter barriers like the wall) for most home defensive situations any ammo will do the job well enough, it all hurts. .... unless you in the shotgun and judge territory, choice of ammo will not change results on standard encounters at all..... you need to know what you will be encountering before choosing specialty ammo, otherwise target ammo is fine. if in the apt. or house, hollow points, but now if they have body armor you screwed.... outside boar killers, but now if in the house you shoot the neighbor in the next house too.... so.... there is no perfect choice. therefore, keep some specialty on hand for specific uses, but store the most of what you use the most of, that is target ammo.... it will work for everything else to a point anyway.

I have been shooting for around 18 years. I have enough to never have to buy during the periods of panic buying. Covid, Obama, etc, etc, etc. I'm buying again now, but not for long term storage, just to re stock what I shoot on a monthly basis.

1000 rds per each gun is minimum. When you say a box are thinking a case?
@larryjanson40113 күн бұрын
i say 10,000 rounds per gun is a very empty shelf. but i am 65. no family, no brats. nobody to get control of what i have except the state. i do plan on “problems”. ( not just ammo). but hope it never comes to that in my lifetime.

One of the biggest mistakes is having to only rely on factory ammo. You're not a reloader or bullet caster in any capacity. Another big mistake is only owning 9mms and 5.56 caliber firearms. Those will be the first to go and be unavailable in any kind of shortage or doomsday apocalypses. It's amazing how many post Obama newer gun owners don't even own a .22 LR of any kind or a shotgun. They've put all their eggs into one basket for handguns and rifles. Neither one of those calibers are much good for wilderness survival or hunting for food sources either. You are just going to make bears (possibly cougars too) mad and continue being attacked. Large elk, moose, caribou and even large whitetails will run off disappearing without a trace unless you are flawless on shot placement while using very select and limited bullet designs. Lots of shooters don't have anything at all to do with archery (bows & crossbows). They don't have anything to do with big bore .625 blowguns or black powder firearms either. Black powder cap and ball, flintlock and inline #209 shotgun primer firearms are great during shortages. They are fairly easy to keep running while scrounging up supplies that tactitardos scuff off and laugh at. What about high powered air rifles both PCP and springers? Don't put all your eggs in one basket as that is the biggest mistake anyone can make.

i used to buy by the case. and when on sale. got a good stock pile that way. i laughed at the gun flea market fools, first in line directly to the bulk reload table. and walked out with case lots of all kinds of over priced ammo. forget the rest of the show. but now the shows are not much any longer, but ok as i do not need more beef jerky. nor do i have money to buy anything anyhow. as sellers of “other” items. wanted above top dollar for anything. and everything.

Gun shows are coming back again when you don't have the Biden/Harris Administration sending their stormtroopers to arrest you or catch you doing even minor infractions wrong. It's legal again to sell privately face to face....as long as that remains gun shows will always remain. Many people won't buy new from a FFL and wouldn't think about ordering online using plastic to pay. There is a endless paper trail that can be easily tracked. They pay cash and in person always.....

People are only human. To make mistakes is human. Make no mistake about that. If I only make three mistakes stockpiling ammo, I could live with that. Small arms ammunition service life is indefinite under optimal storage conditions, and many many decades otherwise, so long as its krpt dry. Personally, whenever possible, we like to shoot as much as we can. It's paid for, and we can't take it with us when we go. 1000 rounds a range trip isn't uncommon... There are no rules you can say that are true about everyones ammunition needs. To do so would be a mistake. We can all decide what we are comfortable with, regardless of anyone elses opinions. Marxists tell people what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. Americans do it freely, however, and whenever we see fit. Lol, because God Bless America!! 🇺🇲

Buy it when you can often, because you don’t know what the laws will be or if it’s even available. And only use metal can to store it. if you have to make an emergency move you don’t want the plastic handles or cares breaking so use metal cans I

go GET your ammo when on vacation. Rent a trailer and save $1000 on shipping costs. Cast bullets, reload ( with high quantity gear) 500 bullets FINISHIED per hour, 500 rds loaded per hour All you save is 10c per rd on 9mm. and this is not counting the picking up of fired brass. If youll be standing in one place, spread out 1 or more sheets of plastic where the brass will be ejected onto the sheeting. Gather the corners of the plastic and pour the fired casings into a bag or bucket. I rent a bit of time on a friends cement mixer and tumble 2000 rds of 223 or 5 ,000 rds of 9mm brass at a time, and use rat wire to separate the brass from the walnut hull cleaning "medium". I cast bullets and load ammo during our short winter, practicing with just the 22lr conversion units during our 2-3 cold months. I train at precision work with .177 lead pellet guns all year. Ditto airsoft for fast draw and rapidfire stuff. I no longer shoot the 40k+ rds of centefire ammo per year that I did when I was actively competing. I haven't benefited a bit from doing-so for decades. I Maintain A class ability (at the US national level) on 5000 rds of 9mm and 1000 rds of 223 fired per year, along with the .22lr, airsoft and .177 lead pellet practice. Once you're shooting A class at the World champs level, it doesn't take all that much in order to stay better than 90% at the US Nationals level and to be in the top 5% at state and regional levels.

With the Earths magnetic field getting weaker and weaker faster and faster it isn’t going to take that big of a CME to take out the electric grid. If you have food and water that 1,000 rounds won’t last long as the city folk come raiding the rural areas. If you have a garden, fruit trees or any crops growing you will be a target.
