Please know 1) The positive comments FAR outweigh the critical ones and we are SO grateful for you and your kindness & encouragement! We feel VERY loved & supported-- THANK YOU!!! 2) We DO try to donate and re-use things whenever possible, but not at the cost of our sanity...somrtimes things just need to get thrown away, we learn from it and try to be more mindful moving forward, but we're still not perfect!!!

Nobody can decide for you what your minimalist life should look like. Your house is so nice and decorated beautifully. I love throwing stuff away. It’s so satisfying. If I was close enough to you I would beg to help out. Give me that stuff! I’ll throw it away. Remember, criticism is like a disease. It keeps infecting and reinfecting.

The Minimal Mom I had a spare bedroom that had turned into a junk room and I trashed a lot of it. Sometimes it just gets done faster that way! 🤷🏻‍♀️I say do whatever works! I gave a lot to a thrift store but they have a huge dumpster next to their building. How do we know a lot of mine didn’t end up inside that??? We don’t!

I recently became a widow, suddenly, at 55, and found your channel in one of my grief-desperate-for-relief moments. My children are all grown and I am alone. Your sweet, relatable, friendly disposition has reached out to me somehow, and honestly, some days cleaning out a drawer, or closet, has saved me. Little by little, my house is becoming less stressful and conducive to my healing. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making it feel like it's okay to not be perfect.

I think you’re missing one really important thing in the “landfill” question - that over your lifetime you’re actually putting WAY LESS into the landfill than the average person. By not collecting & keeping items stashed away, and by not continually purchasing things, your “landfill load” is likely so much less. Whereas someone who keeps (and continually buys) all this crap in the storage or in their home until they die, it’ll all likely go straight to the landfill, rather than being donated gradually when someone could actually use it (like you do). Great video!

Yes and chances are she donates things when they are still somewhat in style or relevant to people who might purchase them. Like if she donates some of her farmhouse modern decor, then another person who wants that type of thing. If its kept in a garage for 50 years, it will likely be in poor shape, dried out, and maybe way out of style or relevance when it makes its way to donation centers (or just the dump).

I would argue that as a minimalist you throw out less, because you accept less inventory and you buy less clutter. And minimalism is fluid. What works for me as a married person without kids will be different than what works for you as a married person with 4 kids. Also, Dr. Seuss said it best.. "Those who mind, don't matter.. Those who matter, don't mind." I love your content and find it very helpful. Keep on doing you. :)

That is so true! As minimalists we have to do that initial purge, but from there, we accumulate way less stuff and therefore throw out less. We are able to be more intentional with our stuff and purchase things that are going to last.

Here's the thing. I don't want to leave my kids with the task of having to deal with all our stuff when we pass away. We went through that with my parents and in-laws and much of our accumulation was from them. I get intense satisfaction with getting rid of things we simply have no use for and now the house and garage are in pretty good shape. Our next big project is to work on the barn!

Dawn, a while back( when covid first started) You had put out a collab video with Cass(Clutterbug) and I left a very negative comment implying(and unfortunately probably flat out saying or criticizing y’all) for your response to covid. I was in a panic at the time about it. I just wanted to take the time to apologize for that. I judged your response to it and I’m deeply sorry for that. I know my comment doesn’t really have to do with your video today directly, but it was on my heart to address the negative comment I left months ago. I’ve felt bad about it for a while. I’ve prayed about it and God is so good, that today He gave me an opportunity to apologize to you. I hope you will accept my apology and know that I appreciate your channel and all that I have learned from it. God Bless you and yours and I look forward to many more videos.🤗🙏🏻💖

There are so many comments, I'm not sure you'll ever read this one, but you have changed my life. I used to feel that I was bad at organizing, and my house was always an embarrassing mess. I've tried Marie Kondo, but was sometimes left with a bigger mess than when I started. I have 4 kids too, and your thoughts on inventory management, the stress relief that comes from living with less, kids playing better with fewer toys--it was the missing link for me. Between you and Cas "the Clutterbug" I have felt empowered to first pare down and then organize what's left in a style that works for my family. We simplified the kids' clothes closets, and now my 10yo tells me about how much less stress he feels about picking what to wear in the morning. We took away all the dishes and silverware except one set per person, and now my 7yo says she loves how clean the kitchen is, even though she has to wash her own dishes. My husband loves that there is always a clean fork for him in the drawer, and he doesn't have to hunt for one in the sink or dishwasher. We simplified the kids toys, and now my 4yo can clean up after himself. We simplified the shoe closet and now the 2yo can find his shoes to put them on or put them away (correctly!) on his own. I spend a fraction of the time tidying up and enjoy a relatively clean home all the time. In the past, I'd give a mighty effort organizing and tidying up only to watch it unravel disappointingly fast, but this time, we're about 2 months in, and things just keep improving, not backsliding. A million thank you's. Thank you for taking the time, thank you for sharing, thank you for pushing past the detractors. And since a thumbs up is the best compliment--we've done that, too. 😊 Thank you!

I think people make snarky comments like “so you’re just throwing everything out” because they feel defensive. If every time they come over, your house is clean and neat looking, it makes them aware of the state of their own home. Or if they know their kids have wayyyy too many toys and they see your kids don’t and they are still happy and healthy. Same reason overweight people get offended when the see other overweight people start to eat healthy and lose weight. It makes them aware of their own issues and they don’t like it.

Great video. I am 72 years old and just started on this journey two years ago. So I have a lifetime of consumption to deal with and decided to deal with it and not pass the job on to my children. So I have guilt for buying too much stuff, guilt for disposing of all this stuff and guilt walking around a huge house with way too much stuff. So I agree if you need a dumpster then you need a dumpster. I help the earth by not buying much of anything anymore. I repurpose, donate and yes send a lot of stuff to the landfill.

Your comment brings so much happiness to me! My mother passed 8 years ago and I’m still dealing with her stuff - thankfully, there’s a lot less now than there was then. I’ve learned that, when dealing with my mother’s belongings, I wasn’t just merely going through ‘stuff’ but I was also working through the emotional and mental baggage she taught me about material objects and the baggage she learned from her mother as well. Dealing with the remnants of her life has contributed to the difficulty I’ve had in focusing on my own life, goals, dreams, and desires. Your decision to take on the work of dealing with your stuff now will come to be one of the greatest blessings you can give to your children upon your passing. Keep it up!! 👏👏 I wish my mother had made that same choice.

So we were taught once that: 1/3 of the people “out there” will not “like” us, 1/3 won’t care, and 1/3 will connect in a friendly way. That was SO helpful to me to be able to dismiss criticism, rejection and even apathy for what I bring to any given situation by thinking oh, well there in that 1/3 category... I also remember Joshua saying the items are already on the earth, so you do not have to accept your home being the landfill they live in! And anyone can see, if they think for a moment, that these decisions live into the future choices that really DO make a difference!! Keep up the good work! You guys bless many many families with your guidance. Thank you 🤩.

Dawn, When I first heard you speak about decreasing our “mental inventory,” it was like the clouds opened up and the angels sang. Your perspective completely resonates with me. As for “essentialism,” I think that if items are used regularly (such as throw pillows for comfort or coziness), there is reason to keep them. If things just sit around because we “might need them later,” it’s clutter that increases cortisol, as you said, and makes a home feel like a storage unit.

Dawn Madsen I used to follow a lady on Facebook that occasionally would talk about minimalism. Whenever she did, I just turned to another channel. I thought minimalism was just a crazy fad! THEN I discovered you and your channel. Your bubbly, upbeat, sweet, and caring personality, as well as your entirely different way of discussing minimalism, completely changed my mindset, and made me want to jump aboard the minimalism train! For me, minimalism is just another way of saying I’ve reached my clutter threshold! That threshold looks different for everyone,so to me, minimalism is not a cast in stone word, it’s a fluid state of having only the amount of inventory in our home that will bring us, our spouse, and our children, calm, peace of mind and happiness. THANK YOU, DAWN for being the wonderful person you are, and for changing the lives (for the better) of so many people.😊❤👍

I like Fiery Dawn! All of these points you explained well. And something so many people need to learn - you don't owe every person who makes a snarky comment (in person or by video) an explanation. This served my sister well when a neighbour passed through our park and criticized her "parenting" as she stopped pushing my son on the swing for a minute to answer a message from me. What the lady saw: Person on a phone in a park - child nearby. Bad Parenting. What she didn't see: my sister dropping everything in her life to come help us with childcare during the pandemic for my special needs son, my sister taking him to his appointment that day, doing this therapy activities, and spending an hour with him minutes before hunting for acorns. My sister said: I don't owe you an explanation. Lady walked away. I've never been more proud. ❤️

This maybe long but... Long ago, (60 yrs), my favorite aunt, a wife and mother of three children had a nervous break down. It was very sad. Before the Psychiatrist discharged her , he told her to go home and give each child 3 shirts, pants, socks and shoes. She was to have 1 cup, plate, bowel for each family member. He told her that she would get better much sooner if she minimized her life and the people and things she was responsible for. Happily, she followed his instruction and lived like this for many, many years. We LOVED visiting her home. My cousins were calm and their home was peaceful and always tidy. This guy was way ahead of his time. I followed this pattern for most of my “mothering” years and still own very little. Minimalist NOTHING new. The technology to talk about it is!

After finding your channel I feel like a new person. It started all with 1 video. I didn’t go looking for minimalism but it found me through your videos. After watching a few I then binge watched your channel...something clicked. The whole idea of inventory as I looked around the house it was then I realized my anxiety was all this inventory. It wasn’t that I was a bad mom, wife or homemaker. It was that we consumed way too much stuff! It was then I decided I would start the journey. I call it de-clutter because minimalism scares my husband. We are no where close to what I want to be but the anxiety & depression doesn’t control my life anymore. Thank you for sharing your story. Thank you for saving my mental health!

I'm of a different mindset. Constructive criticism can be super beneficial to those of us that value life long education and improving on the skill set of our craft. It is the difference between growth and stagnation in creativity and life. Healthy internal self talk and boundaries are a prerequisite to allowing a new perspective to be entertained without becoming the burn victims that fear rejection or a differing opinion. If you are seeing feedback as negative, you may want to let a little Dr. Brene Brown into your life. Resilience is a skill set and practice that is often derailed by shame.

Your beautiful home is what stood out for me not how many throw pillows you have.I have watched so many videos about frugal living and minimalist living and the houses are decorated very expensively. Some minimalist have less stuff but it's still expensive stuff. Seeing your house doesn't make me feel like shopping or redecorating my house after watching a video.I love decorating and HGTV but it had me wired to think that I had to spend a lot of money to make my home perfect for entertaining. There have been times I've purchased new items for my home just for company. Then I watched an episode of your show and how you talked about having friends over and I thought wow. You don't need to go in debt decorating your home to entertain. I love and watch Jordan page but her house is so lavish even though she talks about frugal living. You are the real deal you buy from thift stores that's something I hadn't seen on Utube. And it's interesting to see someone do something different because I usually pay more thinking it's will last longer. Absolutely right! It is always weird to hear folks who call themselves minimalists loudly judging others by their own arbitrary standard. I believe it is likely a pretty small minority, and likely mostly folks who are new to minimalism, so they have that zealous fever. I once had someone judge me for having storage totes under my bed, because "a real minimalist wouldn't do that". The totes contained winter blankets for my horses, because I didn't have a barn I could store them in. 🤣 I'm glad that lady was able to keep under her bed clear, but minimalism looks different for different lifestyles.

For years I have been overwhelmed in trying to keep my house in order and tidy and get so frustrated with a couple of my family members. We are not the worst but we have lots to improve for sure. My 13 year old daughter is the one who discovered your channel. Now we both value the idea of living minimally and this has been a way for us to connect and have something in common. We just started 2 months ago..,. I guess we are in the “ big purge” . Already I have noticed I am so much for thoughtful in the things I buy. The idea of someone else truly finding joy in whatever item it is you are giving away truly helps! That has helped my daughters a lot. Thank you so much for your positive influence!

I started on my journey with a book called "The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning". I had just had to help my elderly parents move from their home into a senior apartment facility. I never want my kids to have to go through all the stuff I did. Most of it had not been used or probably even thought of in years but was still in the house. Then I found Marie Kondo...and you...and Erica Lucas...and Josh Becker and have read numerous books on the minimalist lifestyle. I have passed on some family heirlooms to my sons instead them having to wait until I was gone. It is unbelievable how "good" and relaxing my house feels and how much easier it is to clean! Better to take things to the landfill than have your house and/or garage become a landfill! Keep up the good work, you have helped me immensely!

I think every person in our country needs to embrace this concept if they haven't already. We are drowning in stuff, it eats up our time, gives anxiety and is causing major anxiety and depression. Marketers are evil geniuses leading us down a rabbit hole. I think people would be shocked at how much happier and "lighter" they felt if their homes had less in them. You and Tom are doing the best parenting by teaching your children these concepts before they get so attached to things and end up going thru the struggles of managing an excess of inventory and then decluttering, stop it before it starts, it's a wonderful concept ❤ I am so glad these comments don't discourage you so that hopefully more people can be saved from their stuff! And if we all become more conscious of our consumption then the earth wins too! Thank you, you are an amazing teacher and encourager, keep the videos coming! ❤

My husband and I have been living minimally for our entire lives together-37 years. Some areas of our home are very lean and others are not and it is based on what we use and our needs. One example would be our bath towels and kitchen towels. We each have two each. Two are in the bathroom and two are in the cabinet but in our kitchen we have 7 dish towels because we use one a day and sometimes two. It just makes our lives easier but it definitely isn't minimal. Everyones definition needs to be based on what works and is manageable to them. You keep doing you.

I can’t imagine why it’s anyone’s business how your family chooses to live or that they have a right to question it. Would these same people ask a hoarder why they live in all of their clutter and mess? 🤔 Social media has definitely given some people the green light to be rude and disrespectful. As a child, my mom always told me if I don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all. I feel that still applies. Especially in the world we are living in right now. When they passed away it took 5.....that’s FIVE .....of the BIGGEST size dumpsters to empty the junk left in the three homes they owned after numerous garage sales, donating useful items, passing along to family, etc. I cannot express how physically and emotionally exhausting it was! I do not want my children to have to deal with anything like we did. That experience is always in the forefront of my mind as I realize that minimizing is a constant work in progress. Every time I watch your videos I remember the house I grew up in. In the 1950s and 60s, everyone's house looked like yours. I had three pairs of shoes: good ones, school ones, and old go out and play ones. I had three coats: a church one, a go to school one, and an old go out and play one. We had a new 1950s house but the closets were infinitesimal by today's standards. We had food in the cupboards and food in the fridge and not a lot of stuff on the counters. It was actually no different than your home. How you are living used to be normal. Then excessive consumerism became the norm. I really like your use of the term "essential." "Minimal" denotes lack. "Essential" denotes thinking about your choices. That is exactly what you are doing. And that is exactly why you are my favourite person on KZbin.

so, when someone makes a critical comment to me like the "landfill comment" I found if my come back is "I'm sorry, what have you found to work for you, when downsizing, to not use the landfill as an option?" If you ask it in a sincere tone it totally changes the person's tone toward yourself. You put them in the Advisor position then. It puffs them up even if the conversation concludes with....they don't have any better suggestion. The outcome is, you didn't become defensive and you didn't make them defensive with your reply. I came here to say this - sometimes what people deem "acceptable" for donation is really sad and crappy. Some of our stuff is just junk, plain and simple. (And I consider myself an environmentalist, so don't get me wrong!)

That's exactly the approach I took this time around (with having a new baby and this year being so stressful) I opted to go ahead and throw away more than creating a "donating" pile that would sit in the corner staring at me day in and day out; I heard that thrift stores are being overwhelmed right now because so many people are decluttering (which is great!) and donating. lol

I'm about to do the same, I think! I have a few donate bags that have sat around too long, which is starting to stress me out lol. This year, donation sites were closed for so long, I think they were bombarded when they finally reopened, and I would almost feel guilty about giving them more junk to sort! 😆 Maybe I'll give myself an ultimatum --- drop off this week, or leave at the curb next trash day. 😬

@@heartsandmindsathome I think the donations might be slowing down but it depends on the situation in your area whether anyone is actually thrift shopping now. Our area is still quite restricted and most people are not spending a lot of time browsing in shops so the donations are still tending to pile up. I'm going to offer some of my donations for free on Marketplace/my local Fbk group.

You have been a God-send to me. I stumbled on your videos "by accident" (thanks, God!) a couple of weeks ago and I have been de-cluttering my house and my mind ever since. I've struggled with depression the last year or so and today was the first day in a LONG time that I left my house (to go to work) and I felt GOOD about not only myself, but my house (I was picturing my de-cluttered freezer in my head, LOL!!). I've learned that I'm angry all the time because of all the clutter I live in. I like to call it "controlled chaos" but if it's hurting my mental health, it's not controlled! So THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for what you do. I wouldn't feel this way today if God hadn't "hooked us up" on You Tube!!!

Dawn is a library full of information on simplifying. She is not forcing anyone to watch or even do the things she suggests. You can read/hear all the knowledge you need to know. In the end, we all have to decide how much, and how far we want to take our journey. You do you, and quit with the negative comments. Thank you Dawn for inspiring and showing us the way to a simple life. You have helped so many, and you have a small army of friends that have your back. Stay healthy!🤗👍♥️

I don't miss a single episode. I love your channel. Your style of minimalism is practical and doable. I simply couldn't do with an empty house and only a spoon and bowl and toothbrush. I like stuff around me and I like comfort. But you've taught me that LESS stuff is much better. Thank you thank you thank you!!

We had to deal with all of their "things", when all four of our parents passed. We never want our children to have to go through that. Living Simply is "so freeing". It's a lifestyle that makes room for relationships instead of "stuff". It also makes things much easier for those left behind to deal with "our things".

Your channel has been so helpful to me. After my husband passed away, I had to get rid of so much in order to move into a smaller space. I have lugged tons of stuff, including lots of paper too, around with me for years, always thinking I'd need it or would eventually use it. I am so liberated by getting rid of stuff. I call this my year of letting go. I'm still letting go of stuff. It is therapeutic. I actually FEEL lighter. And your videos, which I love, have helped me through that journey. Thank you a million times over. I enjoy you and your family. Keep on going!

I remember a video where Tom and Diana got on to you about your eye contact and hand motions ... I got SO defensive FOR you. I love that you are not staring us down and that you move your hands to keep us on track for what you are saying. I seriously wanted to shout into the phone, "She's our friend, not our professional speaker!" 😂 But, for real, you are one of the most sincere people "I know" and your nerves and personal quirks make you my favorite KZbinr. I truly think we could be friends. 💕 (I think Diana's professionalism is awesome for her personality and job, btw.)

Minimalist is all subjective, so if that’s what we’re looking for, that’s what it is! Some people 🤪 always are critical. I’m just sad that they feel so much negativity.

For my family, we are working toward the minimal way of life daily. That means, I am cleaning out closets, storage areas, etc...when I have time. It's not everyday, all day. It is also making the conscious effort when I shop to keep it minimal. I don't need all the "stuff" I see or the impulse items. It is saving me money and keeping clutter out of my house. We donate to our local charities/churches anything that is in good shape and that can continue to be used by others. Sadly though, sometimes things do just end up in the trash/landfills. That is a much larger global issue that we all need to address. It's not going to be solved because I kept old children's toys in my closet. If the toys are broken or out of date they gotta go. I love your vlogs and keep the tips and encouragement coming! It has relieved so much stress in my home I cannot even express my joy about minimalism!! Thank you!

I have reached a point in my life (3 older kids at home) that we are all too big to be in our apt with all my stuff - stuff that now that we have reached these points in our lives - I truly just don't need. I want to thank you for showing me/us ways that we can maintain a de-cluttered lifestyle and be HAPPY & CONTENT ... with throw pillows! I have been thinning the house, or trying to, and I will put stuff out for neighbors to take, piece by piece, and if no one wants it, I will throw it away. With everything going on right now, our local donation centers are not receiving items, but I can drive 45 minutes each way to where they are. Not ideal when I'm doing one small corner at a time. So if there is not an immediate need for something that I have by someone in my 'local (250 unit apt complex)', it stresses me out more to have a pile of stuff that I already made a decision that I don't need any longer. You do you and direct those Negative Nellies to me - I've had a rough week already and need to let off some steam!!! Take Care & Thanks for all you share.

I think my favorite part of watching you and Tom is how real you are … you are honest and upfront and that is refreshing. And none of us are perfect. I can tell you honestly that what I love the most about you, Cas, and Dana is that there is truly no judgement. We are all free to take and use what works for us and pass on whatever doesn’t. But your reassurance that progress is better than perfection and improvement is still better. You make me feel encouraged daily. Thank you for all you do !! ❤
