I liked the first one and I'd definitely buy those books! They'd be interesting and humorous, the design is good and friendly to people who arent big readers and a collection would look good on a shelf. People buy Guinness World Records and Ripley's Believe it or Not and it's the same sort of thing. I don't think it's offensive to find rare and abnormal people interesting.

Funny. I love how she was the only one who saw this as exploitative to people with disabilities and medical abnormalities- which it was, very much so, when it was done a hundred years ago. This guy just found a new way to try to exploit something that we got rid of for very good reason. Glad he failed, but I'm sad to see even ten years ago only one person actually said "Don't repeat problematic history". If you think saying "that's exploitation" out loud is annoying, I don't know what to tell you

I disagree. These ppl earned a living performing in a Circus. Rather then be institutionalized, scorned, Starving. CIRCUS "freaks" were honored in their community as performers, and how big a draw they were. Documenting their lives honors their existence. The sharks reaction was narrow minded.
@rawritstayl0r866 Жыл бұрын
you have nno idea what you're talking about. the carny life was awful, and it still is...the companies that run travellingn fair shows, the same ones that used to also run fair shows with 'freaks of nature' side shows, have always exploited the weird, social outcast, and the mentally ill. read robertson davies' world of wonders. the industry was full of rape, incest, and even murder. do some research on carnival life.
@jmharris251 Жыл бұрын
@RawrItsTayL0R I believe you are right. But ppl who are different have always been shut out. Documenting these famous " freaks" is not disrespecting them. I think of the cult film "Freaks" which was despised when it came out. The "Freaks" were told they couldn't eat at the studio commissary. Like famous cone head French twins, Worm boy, lobster boy, morbidly obese 600lb woman, were outcast & treated savagely. Even if they were allowed to live. They had no life anywhere. 1900s, 30s, 50s less law, more savage. No technology. No tracing. All very very sad.

The wording in that 'book' didn't honor or praise the performers / 'freaks'. The 'book' kept talking about the freakish features instead of focusing on the struggles the people faced.

The first one is offensive, I think that's obvious to most people. It is historical, but the people being exploited back then still exist today.
