The spitball was also just a way for pitchers to get something sticky on the ball. They would chew things like different kinds of bark and other stuff to spit on the ball. The reason it ended up getting banned was because all the balls were getting stained, not due to any actual movement on the pitch.

Spitballs absolutely have a different motion the ball is snapped as it is thrown, imparting a back spin on it. I watched Gaylord Perry as a kid. The guy had a noodle arm, but the ball would move like a knuckler with a lot more heat.

spitball makes sense since anything not approve to get a better grip is illegal. the puffball makes sense because it can ruing the batter's vision to pick up the ball which is dangerous. the ability for the batter to pickup the ball is so important that the outfield is blacked out to help the batter see the ball. i don't have an issue with the quick pitch but i can see it being an issue because it doesn't allow the batter to get set

I remember the Braves had a pitcher named Larry Bradford who threw puff balls until Gaylord Perry joined the team. It wasn't long before Perry was throwing puff balls too, and the league quickly put an end to that.

He did get unfairly called for a bunch of balks because of the shuffle though. Umpires just hate joy.

I never got caught doing it but once my high school competitive baseball days were over I played softball and I would spit on the ball before every single pitch. I felt like underhand pitching didn't have enough velocity exiting your hand and if I could get spit on it, then it would glide right off my fingertips straight down the pipe. In softball, you're not really trying to strike anyone out bc its fn softball but if you can pitch it with some steam right down the pipe but on the lower part of the zone, batters would ground out to the shortstop/3rd baseman. I did it for years till I stopped playing and like I said, somehow I never got caught, probably bc no1 would even fathom a pitcher in softball doing it.

Spit balls aren’t really illegal. I did them throughout my baseball career. You can’t spit on the ball, but you can lick your fingers which is what I did. Not sure what the rule is now, but in softball you can still lick your fingers, but you have to (touch) your pants before pitching. Which you don’t have to touch with your fingers. Now why would anyone want to lick their fingers? The amount of grip you get on the ball in doing so is like glue. Allows you to add an enormous amount of spin to the ball.

If you knew baseball history you'd know they already changed that rule like over 150 years ago. In the 1860's pitchers had to not only throw underhand, but also had to pitch slow and the batter got to tell them where to throw it. Only swing and misses were a strike and any fair ball caught before the ball bounced twice was an out.

Gaylord Perry was only ejected once for allegedly throwing a spit ball. I was actually at that game in Seattle when I was a kid. According to his autobiography he only doctored the ball early in his career until he was able to work on other pitches.

Gaylord Perry was ejected from more games then anyone I can remember,y, I've seen the umpire completely undress him out on the field except his pants and they took him in the locker room looking for a foreign substance and could not find any. Juan Marichael was my favorite pitcher at the time. His windup was insane how high he kicked his leg while pitching and you can forget Willy Mays cf Bobby Bonds RF Willie McCovey 1st. Quick pitches are legal, however the batter needs to be in complete awareness that you are pitching. Look up the rule in the mlb rule book. My league uses mlb rules and i quick pitch all the time, but as long as it’s done safely it’s completely legal

Quick pitch... in full motion you can change your timing, just in major league its the show, you can't do this. I was doing it in full motion and ump or ref wasn't able to do anything at my level. In half motion with runner on base , you have to do your pause legit. You have less control
