I don't understand why it makes a difference if the impact was over 3 meters out if the ball was pitched right down the middle and was crashing straight into the center of the middle stump. The bowler can only control of where the ball goes, he can't control how far up the pitch the batsman wanders, so why should the bowler be penalized for that? What a stupid rule.

This rule was made because the ball tracking technology is not reliable when the distance between the pitching and impact is less than 40 cm or greater than 2.5 meter.
