Things you definitely should do, and things you definitely should not do when working on your bmx bike.
There are a lot of different ways to work on bike and a lot of different tools you can use. We all have our own way of doing things, but there are definitely a few things we all can agree we should or should not do when working on our bikes.
This video is my take of these things.
New videos every Mon. Tues. Weds. & Saturday with random videos in between.

Here's an idea for a maintenance vid...homemade bearing press. I finally replaced my driver bearings, and wow, it sure was easy with a press. You should have seen me cavemanning it the first time, what a shit show, lol. 5 bucks in parts at Home Depot. And lots of grease on that bolt.

I have 15 staples in my head at the moment, and spent about 8 nights in the ICU with two brain Surgeries. DON’t ride your bike without a helmet, DONT MEGLECT HOW MUCH FUN IT IS TO THROW FRONT SUSPENSION ON A BMX, DONT 100% figure out how to ride pegs on a front suspension fork on a BMX and Not tell me what your Move is to not blow out the fork and finally... DONT ride street and hit gaps fast without brakes unless you know how to bail or kick out the bike. Oh yea, DONT drop gaps without proper speed and DONT go big unless your committed. Hopefully the two appointments I have tomorrow afternoon get these staples out my dome, but still can’t be shreddin’ for a while. Have fun people and helmets are more of a blessing then you may ever know. Wheelchairs are not why we shred our bikes. Good luck to other hurt up folks... stay up.

no problem as long as you dont have anti roll pins it works every time , only problem is sometimes it fuses the axel nut to the inside of the peg and its kinda hard to get out. but as a last resort its not a bad idea

I tighten my jam nut as tight as it will go. I do this for two reasons. 1. It seats itself and keeps it from loosening up. The tension only last through the break in period per manufacture specifications. 2. Helps build calf muscles

ha got you, i had 6mm broached bolts for my S&M stem. :P bolt mods for the win. also pretty sure some of the american made stems now ship with 6mm broached bolts. correction grease in a cassette hub is fine. however profile doesnt recommend it and some other companies dont due to weaker springs that leads to skipping hubs. numerous hubs come with grease loaded into them outa the box. OG we the people supreme cassette hub for example comes out of the box silent. remove the grease or let it break in and it gets loud as shit. you can also double spring mod or bend the springs in a profile to get them to work with grease. or use primo springs. medium weight grease is all you need but ive used thick stuff to make a hub silent. triflow is the best along with a dab of grease on the spindle where the driver sits and on the ratchet ring. any time you take the rear wheel off just pop the jam nut a couple threads pull the driver out enough to get a bit of triflow in and done. also probably the only thing you should do with stock profile hubs. profile actually recommends triflow for their hubs. i have this in writing from someone who works for them. also you dont want your cassette hub completely dry this is bad for them. small amounts of grease. also loads of cassettes come with grease in them. for coasters you want a shitload of grease. medium to thick grease. except in a few spots. for sprocket bolts and a few other bolts i recommend locktite instead of standard grease. does all the same good stuff but keeps them from loosening. also for wheels use grease on the nipples, especially aluminium ones. prevents them from getting hard to turn which can also assist in them stripping out or even breaking. prevents the creaking when tensioning them as well. if you build your own wheels or have someone that does and knows how to pre stretch spokes and pre seat the heads into the hub(basically build the wheel up once its all tight brace the axle against something and push on the rim from various points on both sides, do a few times as well as massage the spokes and youll feel them come a little looser, repeat till they dont loosen anymore) then you can either do that then remove all the nipples one at a time and locktite them or do it right off the get go. or wait till the spokes to stretch then remove the nipples and lock tite the ends of the spokes. also for bolts breaking you can sometimes replace bolts with hollow bolts this can let you hammer in something to turn it out if the head ever breaks off or gets stripped. for certain bolts(brake lever and seat clamp) i swap to aluminium bolts. shorten the bolt length when i can, then notch the bolt right under the head. if you have rolled threads on the bolt this makes the weak point right under the head and causes it to break with exposed threads. that way you can take pliers and remove the stump. also lighter and cheaper then titanium and good quality alloy bolts on levers last a real long time. seatclamp makes no deal unless you do alot of sitting on it with the post really high(like on a flatland bike or mountain bikes) and on some clamps it means you can save the clamp if the bolt brakes. on others it just looks nice with the anodized bolts. but yeah cassette hubs do need some lubrication, even profiles. pretty sure they also recommend a dry teflon based lube. thatd be best, prevents dirt attraction but still provides a little lubrication.

@bmxriderforlife1234 6 жыл бұрын
oh and last two things. heat is needed for two things. bending levers, otherwise they snap, and if you want to pre break in your grips or alter the way they feel. boiling them can make them feel softer, for some grips it makes them feel broken in for others it just makes them soft. like ive done it with a few grips including grips i know really well. boiling a certain pair made them soft, softer then they ever get from breaking in. however a bunch of people i know did it with long necks and it makes them feel like they are a couple months old and nicely broken in. also amount of heat is important. hair drier is fine for removing stickers. heat gun on low should be fine as well. figured id mention it seeing as ive seen alot more people running custom bent levers lately.

Also..... I feel the part about being nice to your bike when your working on it... Buddy had a mint, MINT, like; returned-to-store-because-of-customer-complaint, mint, Specialized P.2 dirtjumper, just finished a nice af custom hot pink paint job(did rest of main components black, with white Rockshox single-crown forks). Just put all the bearings in, put forks/headset setup together, put both Revolution wheels with brand new maxis tires an tubes, I'm working from the back he's working from the front, we have the thing fully put together, and we can't QUITE get the chain to stay as tight as we'd like. Buddy gets mad at cuz we have to remove a link in his chain....... So.... With the large crescent wrench..... Puts a 1/2 inch dent about a third the way down the top tube of the frame🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

1- Flat out don't ever use WD-40 unless it is the new Bike specific type. You can use it to clean out bearings and your chain. However, if you do and don't know how to get the WD out... problem. 2- Incorrect about hubs. Some do and some don't need grease. NO hub needs much, but some do. I use to know exactly what hubs needed grease. But, after 35yrs riding, too many around to keep track. Best advice I can give is to open a cassette up. If you see grease, it requires the same amount each time you work on it. I use marine grease made for boat engines. Best stuff that I have ever used. Works better than even gun grease which is very good also. 3- IF you know what you are doing, grease sealed bearings. Why? All come with a proper lube from the factory. However, over time dirt. Grime, water and more get into it. This is what can cause a hub or crank bearing to blow up on you. They will last longer if you take care of them. Not forever, but a hub bearing probably on average is going to last 2-3 years on average. By cleaning and lubing the bearings you can get a year or so more out of them. But, you have to take the rubber seal off to do it. And if you goof, it will screw the bearings up. I use a razor blade, and no issues. Then clean like a chain, put a bit of grease in and rebuild the bearing. It also makes the bearings smoother, think about it the factory pretty much mass produce a bearing. So, some might be great and some others not as great. Fix it, but only if you have done it to an old bearing to practice. Last, buy a torque wrench. Everything is marked be it on the parts or on the company site. Those numbers will save you a few headaches.

Don't forget to maintain your tools. I've seen plenty of rusted, janky socket sets begging for a bit of love. Seriously, they're so simple to open, clean and grease. Put ferrules or tape on the ends of brake cables, those are sharp and destroy paint. Do run bar ends. I've seen the cookie-cutter effect and it ain't pretty. Tape flappy stuff. Cable noise is annoying and those cables can rub the paint up. Grease moving bits, but don't go wild. A little bit of grease helps to install bearings or cranks but that shit shouldn't be over applied to some bolts. If a bolt has locktite then don't lube it too much, it's not meant to be easy to take it out.

For the over tightening part, the back wheel and front wheel, over tightening those can bend your dropouts and can cause the wheels to be a bitch when trying to tighten them. And as you know, a frame and and forks are expensive.
