Kicking the ball with the side of the foot is only for indoor hockey, outdoor you will never get enough speed on the ball to get it out of the circle. You kick with the front of the kicker, and to avoid the ball to go up, you need to tilt the foot an raise your heel.

Probably not the technique I would be teaching. If you cant get enough speed/power by using the inside of the kicker then I would suggest that you look at your technique and figure out where it could be improved.
