Hey guys! I just wanted to post here as a first year PT student with my perspective having just gone through the process. This is a great video and I just wanted to add a couple of points from my experience: 1. HAVE A STRONG SELLING POINT! - Most applicants want to be "pretty good" in every area but dont have any one area that makes a committee member sit back and say "wow we need this person!" It doesnt have to be grades. Your grades need to be acceptable, but if you load up on work experience in the field or something else to point to that's extraordinary on your resume you WILL stand out to a school. 2. SEND SCHOOLS MORE INFORMATION ABOUT YOURSELF THAN WHAT YOU ARE REQUIRED TO SEND! - Again, making yourself stand out from the crowd can do wonders for your chances of being admitted. Make a powerpoint or send a letter to professors within a program after you visit thanking them for their time and give a little more information about yourself to the school 3. GO VISIT THE SCHOOL ON A PERSONAL VISIT- NOT AN OPEN HOUSE! - There are some programs that will decline letting you tour the program at any time other than an open house, but if a program will let you- scheduling an individual visit will make you stand out in someone's mind who matters- I promise! 4. EXPECT SCHOOLS TO ASK ABOUT THE WEAK SPOTS ON YOUR RESUME AND BE PREPARED TO EXPLAIN THEM: - Don't be caught off guard in an interview if someone asks you why your gpa isn't higher. If you've made it to the interview, they probably don't even care anymore about numbers at that point. But if you look like you are hiding something or not confident in your intelligence it can negatively impact your interview! 5. BE REALISTIC ABOUT YOUR PROGRAM! - If you know you are a borderline candidate for PT school, don't bother applying somewhere like UNC or Ohio State. You won't get in and it frankly doesnt matter. PT school is not about going to a football or basketball game it's about earning a career. Every program is qualified to teach you or they wouldn't be accredited! So take a good look at every option available knowing that some schools receive more applications than others. Hope this helps!

It is really sad the a 4.0 from "University of Nowhere" with an easy curriculum is valued above a 3.6 from a nationally ranked institution with tough academic rigor. PT schools should really question if this provides the best candidates to become a physical therapist. It is the top of the high school class that attends institutions with tougher academic rigor. The average student can get a 4.0 at the "University of Nowhere" . The PT profession should demand better in their selection process.

This all plays out as you say - a BS in Health Sciences 3.7 with all course work taken at Baylor in a very competitive environment and a great GRE doesn't get into PT school. Meanwhile a BA General Studies from Baylor with all sciences taken at a community college with a 3.9 and a below average GRE is headed to PT school. The whole PT admission process is broken - what an inditement of the physical therapy education process. Best of luck to all the community college science students.

There is another path that you did not mention and may be unaware of. That is to become a PTA (physical therapist assistant) first, work for a few years and then go to a school with a program that gives you a graduate/DPT degree. I can only speak for the state of Ohio, but we have at least one of those programs. Of course grades are still very important and I believe that you have to earn some letters of recommendation from other PTs. Other states might have such programs.

Very helpful indeed...I personally was interviewed twice for the only program I could attend in-state and figured I was a shoe in since all my I's were dotted & T's were crossed quite neatly. I was so nervous in the interview both times afraid I would blow it that I did. I am terrified to try again, but 5yrs of pre-req work while working full time as a single parent, using my vacation time during the day to accumulate 200+hrs volunteer time with 4 major hospitals? I feel I owe it to myself at least to try again, the only downside are those courses rolling past 5yrs old that I have to retake...nobody told me it would be this hard!

But after 175hrs in numerous settings & demographics of volunteer time I found it rather boring in the end....same same not much variation...over-hyped field really w/a Mtn of debt afterwards....I switched back to nursing which I'll eventually specialize in & the VARIETY is huge ..no boredom here!!

+D-Daenerys not much variation in PT? There are so many different types of settings and specializations on can work in, I don't find that to be true unless you allow yourself to be stuck on the job forever. Good Luck.

*sigh* this post is so old? At any rate to each their own, I was speaking from 150hrs volunteer setting (inpatient, outpatient, acute care rehab, pool therapy etc *shew*) plus personal experience and yes, same same..that is my own conclusion. In addition it's a slower pace even in outpatient rehab *yawn* and moving onto different arenas has been 10x more rewarding without the additional student loan debt...variety is the spice of life! I think the key is loads of volunteering and the balls to put it aside even with all the pre-reqs and time in to say "yup, not for me, next..."

Hello everyone, I really enjoyed watching this video and appreciate the advice tremendously. Here's my scenario and I'd just like to know everyone's opinions about where I stand and what I should do from here. I'm a senior with a 3.3 gpa overall and prereqs, I've retaken a class to achieve a higher grade and I plan on retaking one more. I have had a lot of difficulty in school because of being an independent student. My mother passed away freshman year and my financial aid transferred to my wealthy unsupportive father whom I have never lived with. So since my mother got sick, freshman year in high school, I've been supporting myself. My grades have suffered because of the need to work. I've worked between 25 and 36 hours throughout the week during school and during breaks I always work about 65 hours each week. I am currently unable to attend my final year of undergrad where I would complete my last semester in exercise science and my last semester of prereqs. I am working to pay back a year of tuition and then my final year. I am extremely dedicated to becoming a physical therapist. I was working for a year and a half as a Direct care giver, among many other jobs, but now I'm going to be taking my personal trainer certification at the end of the month. I plan on working for about a year as a personal trainer... So this is my scenario, what are my chances of getting into Cleveland State specifically. Even if the chances are bad what can I do to get in? Anyone have any advice or opinions? I'm a strong christian with an incredible work ethic. Since I was 13 I've been working to pay for anything I've ever gotten. I'm getting married this year and I'm going to be 22 soon. i just got a B.S in Biology but unfortunately since im poor i had to work and ended up with a 3.3 gpa... i was on top of the game and loved it but just didt have the time... now idk what to do! i dont have anymore financial aid either... im stuck... took me 6 years! got an associates too.. there are no jobs with a degree in bio and frankly i want to continue studying specially in the health or medical field, i have the potential and brain power to succeed! what can i do :(

I got my MSc first and even though I didn't plan on going to PT school at the beginning of MSc, having the research experience really helped with my application. Plus the courses in grad school, especially in research grad school, tend to grade higher because they don't want the students to have bad grades to not be able to apply for scholarship. In the mean time students will have time to do some volunteer. A lot of people waste years and keep applying, thinking they will just keep working and somehow that'll make them more competitive. Put yourself in the interviewer's shoes, if you have done nothing except the same job (that's not healthcare related or challenging enough...reception doesn't really count) then why would they take you over someone else?

I have a 3.88 from Carnegie Mellon, my verbal GRE was 96 percentile and math only 60 percentile, but I think that's fairly solid. I'm a private yoga and Pilates instructor, and have been rehabilitating all types of injuries and people, some of which are MDs, for 5 years. My concern is the rec: It seems like they don't want recs from "patients" and I've had no supervisor during this time who could write me a rec. What do you think is the best way to jump over this hurdle? I feel my career transition is super reasonable and relevant, but because my background is unconventional I'm worried. Any strategic advice here would be awesome!!

Hello, I'm currently in undergrad school to become a pt therapists. I work 30 hours a week and have a gpa around 3.2. Would going back and retaking classes I got a C or low B in, be beneficial to boosting the gpa? Also, volunteering for the city or for a hospital would be most beneficial in getting in to pt school? I have a question about grades. If you got bad grades your first two years of undergrad (2.6 GPA) and then very good grades for your second two (3.8 GPA over past 60 hours) but your GPA winds up rounding to a 3.2, will PT schools weight what you have achieved more recently with greater magnitude than when you were younger and obviously not mature yet? I also scored very well on the GRE (168 in quantitative and 161 in verbal).

i am currently getting a degree in Allied Health exercise science (Pre-PT track) at the University of Cincinnati(decent sized school) with an GPA of 3.5 but i have been working for a non-profit organization for almost an year now and i will have another year of experience of working in this health care setting as a Direct support professional before applying to Grad school. My question to you is my job as a DSP going to be an advantage over other competitor? I will basically have 2 years of experience as an "care giver" before applying even know my job isn't technically linked to physical therapy its self. Thank you for time.

What advice would you give someone that doesn't get in their first year applying? I have a 3.38 , on track to graduate in 3 yrs. (this yr.). 100 hrs observation. I've applied to 8 schools, and only 1 interview so far. I'll find out from 3 schools in March. I'm confident I'll get in the interviewed school, but don't like it. If someone doesn't like the only school they get in (based on location and various reasons) would you say it's worth strengthening application by choosing to grad in 4 years? UPDATE! I have now earned 39 credits and will be up to 42 in 4 weeks. My cumulative GPA is 3.897. The only class I didn't receive an A for was Accelerated Precalculus. Listed below are the PT pre-requisite courses I've completed: Bio (w/ lab) Bio II (w/ lab) A&P I (w/ lab) A&P II (w/ lab) Basic Psychology I have to complete either Chem I& II or Physics I& II before I transfer to a 4-year university. I'm going to speak to an advisor this month about electives that will help with my future bachelor's degree. Do you have any advice for me regarding my current situation? I've been anticipating for a while whether I should finish off my bachelor's now as I've only been in school for 3 years (I took summer courses starting high school and every summer during college) or if I should spread out the coursework and instead dedicate more time in observing and working as a Physical Therapist Technician. My GPA is 3.5 right now, definitely not good enough to get in but may good enough to get wait listed with the school I want, but I'm scared I'm rushing into the program and I haven't given myself enough time to actually apply the information I'm learning in school, and also the information I'm learning in the observation hours. Quick question for you guys. After 4 years in the Army I finally had time and motivation to head to college. I am majoring in Bachelors of Science and Health Care Administration and was just wondering does a bachelors in this or other health degree increase the chances of getting into a graduate program you think? Second question you said get into an easy college and well seeing how I am always deployed I picked the University of Phoenix. I don't know if that will hurt me also. I have a high undergrad GPA of 3.94 with minors in nutrition and psychology. I am currently trying to get as much observation hours as I can before I apply to schools this summer/fall. I am currently at 106 hours with a goal of obtaining 200 hours this summer. My GRE score was not what I had hoped for (Verbal - 152, Quantitative - 152, Writing - 3.0) and I will most likely retake it to at least bump the writing score up. Also, is it your total gpa when you get a degree thats taken into account when applying or individual grades of the classes that are required to get in. Ill be graduating next spring with a degree in chemistry, a chemistry certificate (means Ill be a recognized chemist by the american chemistry society), a GPA of ~3.6-3.7, and 4 semesters of research (including a publication and internship). I am currently a student in Human Nutrition, Food, and Exercise at Virginia Tech and so far my first semester has went well besides one class (Organic Chemistry). I recently transferred in as a Junior due to one year of community college credits and Governor School credits in high school through another community college. I was wondering, if I am forced to withdraw from Organic Chemistry and say I re-take it at a local community college instead of here at Tech, would PT school look down on that or not really care? Also, I noticed you guys talking about going to easier schools. Well, Radford University is very close by and the standards are much lower. The DPT program I hope to get into is also Radford's PT Graduate school. I love it here at Virginia Tech, but was wondering what your opinion is on transferring to Radford? I believe my grades would be higher there even if by a little since the academics aren't as rigorous as Tech's. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dear physicaltherapyvideos, I have a bachelor's degree for radiologic science and current works as a radiology technologist for two years .. during my time in the 3 year cohort batchelor program my grades drop from 3.4 down to a 2.8 GPA because the classes are very difficult and we get get tested on anatomy/ and everything else every day we are in class so it feels it is a professional program... my concern is would i still have a chance to get into the program even if my grades are at a 2.8? how badly is it going to affect my chances of getting in since I have tons of experience in hospital working with a lot of physically disabled patients and I was previously in a professional program. if i cant is a way that i can change my gpa? Hello, I am a student at the University of Texas San Antonio. I am looking to apply to a PT school once I complete my Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. I was thinking of transferring to UT Austin. My GPA right now is a 4.0 but would the fact that UTSA is not ranked as high as UT Austin make a difference? Let's say I graduate with a 4.0 from UTSA. What about starting as a physical therapist assistant first? I plan on bringing my GPA up, I only have a 2.62. Then I plan on finishing community college with an AA. After that I wanted to work towards finding a physical therapy school. Could I work part time as a PTA and go to physical therapy school part time, or is PT school too demanding? I heard you only need an AA to be a PTA. Also I've failed a few classes due to high levels of stress at home. Do schools look at how many times you've failed a class, or are they mainly just interested in your GPA, because I can bring that up.

I had a very bad gpa after finishing my BA. I went to PTA school and finished in 2008. While working as a PTA I retook several science courses. I applied in 2014 to the weekend PTA-DPT bridge program at U of Findlay and was accepted. I am now a year away from finishing all classes and beginning my clinical affiliations. It is a longer route, but it IS POSSIBLE!

I am currently applying to multiple PT Programs, and I am in the process of writing the essays for each program. The maximum amount of characters they allow is 4500. I feel as if using all 4500 characters would be too wordy, but using too little of the characters will make me sound lazy. However, I do feel like if I can get my point across in a complete, concise and clear manner; then the number of characters I use or do not use will not play a factor in my admission into the program. What do you all think? My top school does not hold interviews, so I believe that "looking good" on paper is the only way to get accepted into the program. I also believe that the essay must play a huge part in their decision because there is not an interview. So, please! Do you recommend I take advantage of all 4500 characters? Although, I feel like I might resort to meaningless remarks for the sake of using all 4500 characters.

I'm currently entering my junior year of college. As of now i have a 3.2 gpa in the kinesiology major at USC. I have worked and will continue to work as an assistant athletic trainer for USC (20+ hours every week) throughout my undergrad, with majority of my time assisting the football team. What would be a good thing to major in my undergrad if I want to go to PT school?

sam is okay Do Psychology. WHY? Because I talked to admissions and they do not care what your major is. You can get a 3.9 as a Psych major easy. Focus on your prerequisites though. The Bio/phy/che classes are typically hard but most schools require only 2 semesters with a lab.WHY IS THIS SMART? Because you will not have to take classes like Neuroscience 420, your science GPA will be really high, and so will your pre req GPA. Admissions are to lazy to look at the amount of credit hours.Take these in the summer and let your teacher know why you are taking them and you need an A which will encourage them to give you an A even if your earned a B+ or A-. I wish someone told me before I made neuroscience my major. But ^ will make you look like the best candidate ever as long as you have observation hours/ community service/ extracurriculars and good LORs

Im 22, i'm finishing my associates degree. I didn't do to well as i'd like due to life events. By the time i graduate from this community college I should be sitting at a 3.0 gpa. I know this is obviously no where near the "bubble"b but I will be continuing my education at a senior college and hopefully will pick up my grades. Do you guys think its too late for me? I'm a New Yorker if that makes any difference. I recently found what I wanted to do In life (physical therapy), and over the fall-winter I plan on volunteering at a Physical Therapy office.

I know certain schools habe pre requisites for there grad pt program so its kinda hard to pick a major that offers these various and different pre requisite for different colleges in NYC.

Thank you so much for making this video; it really cleared things up for me. My academic history is pretty good. I had above a 3.8 GPA in high school and a 26 on my ACT. I currently have a 3.8 community college gpa, and I am 19 years old (just graduated last May with 29 dual enrollment credits). I want to know, in your opinion, what are the chances of me pulling a 3.6-3.8 at a senior college? I plan on transferring to Grand Valley State University this coming summer and majoring in Biomedical Science. How much, if any, do admission committees consider your undergraduate degree? Do they have any preference to one degree or another, or is it just about getting all of the prerequisites? Also, how many hours of healthcare experience do you think is an adequate amount. I have no healthcare experience yet, however, I can change that pretty quickly. I just want to have an idea of how many hours per week I should commit to. Finally, do you think that admission committees would look at my young age as a disadvantage to getting accepted? I am projected to have my bachelor’s degree by the time I am 21 or 22 years old at the latest, and I would like to get accepted immediately ensuring the completion of my undergraduate degree.
