So here’s a tip for the Grayl… I remembered in Basic training that we would take duct tape and our web belts and do a wrap around and cut the tape and then we would mark out the days of the week in the field and then keep a tally on whatever day it was for how many canteens of water we finished… same thing here. Fold a length of tape and make a pull tab and then tape it onto the grayl and every time you fill the bottle out a tally mark on it so you have a more precise idea how much life is left in the filter. Once you hit the limit of that filter… change it and pull the tape pull tab and replace and start again. No notebook necessary.

On the Sawyer Water Filter Adapter to Nalgene - Wide/Narrow Mouth And USGI Canteen the OPTIONS shown are Wide, Narrow with no mention of USGI Canteen. Is USGI out of stock? If so, maybe have some way to indicate that. Perhaps have your web person keep the option but have it grayed out. May fulfillment come to you in business and in life.

Really good discussion! I like how you kept things real. I carry the travel size Grayl when flying domestically & also to the office. Even though I'm pulling from safe sources, it really helps with the flavor when the water tastes funking. I really like the Sawyer for hiking. I just need to make sure I use it enough to keep it from drying out. Thanks for making it easier for everyone to get outdoors. Have a great week, brother!

Another great video Shawn....thanks! Appreciate the link for Father Nomad's products...just placed an order for the Nalgene and canteen adapters. Happy to help support a USA small business owner! I've used the Sawyer Mini for many years and hundreds of miles of backpacking while training Scouts for the Backpacking Merit Badge. I've used the Cnoc Outdoors soft water bags for most of those trips....red for dirty and blue for clean....but then had to transfer the filtered water to my Nalgenes. With these adapters, now the setup can go direct to my water bottle for certain applications. Also, the option of using my 2 QT soft military canteen opens all kinds of new doors. Thanks again for the tip and keep up the great channel!

Great to see you pulling in gear from the hikers. Plenty of that stuff is perfectly suited for use in survival / bush crafting activities. There's hardly a long distance hiker, or for that matter, an overnighter or weekender, on the Pacific Crest Trail that doesn't have a Sawyer, for example. Literally thousands of people every weekend all summer long using their Sawyers on just one trail speaks volumes of the utility of this device.

for the grayl geopress: its only going to be good for 350 presses (65 gal) if you’re pressing water from clear, flowing sources. if you’re pressing nasty, murky water, it’s going to clog up the filter faster and it’s not going to be good for the full 350 presses (65 gal). per the instructions from grayl: when the filter is new, it takes about 8 seconds to press 24 oz. regardless of how many presses or gallons pressed..and regardless of the quality of the water sources… its time to replace the filter when the time to press 24 oz approaches 25 seconds, or after 3 years from the first use. a unused filter stores for 10 years.
@jeromethiel4323
@jeromethiel4323 2 ай бұрын
That grayl unit should have a mechanical counter on it. Simple to do, every time you use it, increment by one. By my math, you should be able to get 300 uses out of it (~5 uses per gallon, ~60 gallons = 300 uses per filter). Now, that would require you to do it, but it would be there for you TO use.

For the Greyl, about 5.33 24oz containers make up a gallon. 5 x 65 = 325. So you'll get 325 containers worth before having to change the filter, probably a little more.

On the 3D printed thing: One could make an adapter for plastic bags that screws onto the filter. This would allow any bag to be the squeeze bag. 1. You poke a hole in the bottom of any plastic bag you have / carry or find. 2. Attach the adapter through the hole, which is like one of those fittings that allow you to pass wires through things like walls and stuff. 3. Hang the bag from a tree, let gravity do the work. What's the benefit of this? Several liters of water to drink and the packed size is just the filter, adapter and optionally the bag.
@Timeren2010
@Timeren2010 2 ай бұрын
Grayl's own rule of thumb for replacement of the filter is when it takes about 25 seconds to press the contents. Or 3 years after first use. And of course you can calculate as you go. As for price, yeah its in the higher end, but its also very effective at removing just about anything harmful, dirt and grime, bacteria, protozoa, virus, a wide range of chemicals pfos/pfas included, some heavy metals, and it does it pretty fast. Can recommend. A slightly less effective, yet more lightweight setup, could be a Sawyer micro squeeze, and a Platypus Gravityworks Carbon Element plugged in after the filter. I use the latter when hiking, for the sake of weight-reduction.

Grayl has become my regular filter. It is so fast and easy. If I am hiking on a trail with regular water sources, I just refill the grayl when it's low and keep on going. Sawyer is a great camp filter when you are doing it in larger batches. I always just fill it, hang it and get on my camp duties while gravity gets the job done. Grayl is "expensive" but a fresh filter at the start of the season, knowing I still have life in my old one. Let it dry out, put it on a shelf and you have an emergency filter if you are needing one for some long term emergency. Finally, a few of the aquapur's in the first aid kit can save the day if you have a filter failure... and you will some day.

I was recently looking at these items, timely info. The US military also has plastic one-liter square canteens, I checked, and the one-quart caps are interchangeable. Our daughter gave a presentation to her girl scouts recently over the ways to make water safe for drinking by boiling. She advised them that at our camp which is at the base of the Mogollon Rim, we are at 5200 feet in elevation, get a good rolling boil for at least one minute. At the top of the Rim, which is 7,000 feet in elevation, rolling boil for at least three minutes.

I've used a sawyer filtration system for months at a time (daily use) and though you shed light on some setbacks of the unit- it was an essential piece of gear for my long term outdoor living. Best for only personal water usage, but can be used for a group if you dedicate time to water filtration daily (it will take some time and effort). I found the best bottles I used were SMART water bottles for collection and storage of clean water. I'm excited to try out the 3D print adapters solutions. Thanks for sharing and I dig your videos.
