I'm 71, and I first learned to play with fireworks in 1955. I ran with a small gang of kids. We had wars with other small gangs of kids. We used rocks & fireworks. Out in the woods, roving groups of kids. All of them loaded down with rockets, Roman candles, fire crackers, and larger homemade fireworks. Kids often got hurt. We got them to their houses, then ran. Looking back, I can see 50 kids having a full-scale exchange standing 100 feet away. The smoke and sound and explosions, multi colored fire flying back & forth as each side fired all their fireworks! It was glorious and dirty, everybody got burns. We did that twice a year. At 17, I joined the real Army and got to use real rockets & explosives, and when I came back home. I went back out and ran through the woods with the gangs of kids. Others had come home, too. Sometimes, out in the woods, at night, we would run into each other. Of course, we were a little crazy. We brought a new level to the playing field. We had money, and we all disabled vets. For about 3 or 4 years running. Everybody remarked that the level & intensity of the fireworks in the woods was truly a sight to hear & see. The younger kids learned to follow orders and much much more. For the kids, it was super excitement. For the vets, it was a therapy of sorts. Times changed, and the woods became a suburb. Life went on.
