It's 22nd May 2021. I was just listening to Lovin Spoonful, which I haven't done in years. And when I heard "Summer In The City" thinking "What a great summer hit single!" and listened to it twice. Mongo Jerry "In the Summertime," Summer of '73, the ABB released Brothers & Sisters, then we made it to Watkins Glen & that night was magical, they played the whole album.

Hi Mazzy. I must agree that The Beach Boys are the consummate summer band/music. The Stones are always a win. Young Rascals "Groovin'"=a classic. The Byrds are like the soundtrack to summer days. I've recently gotten into Donovan because of you, so thanks for your recommendation... I dig his stuff. Wonderful Stevie Wonder LP... he always reminds me of summer. Especially 'Boogie On Reggae Woman' but 'Superstition' on that Talking Book album is probably my fave Stevie track. Thanks. Cheers.

Waiting On A Song by Dan Auerbach has a cool retro album cover. It is like one of those I come across at a thrift store. Nice collection of summer albums you have showed off. Give REM 2001 release entitle Reveal album a listen. I always consider it to be overlooked but it is great later day REM album. It is like a more reflective summer album, like then the day is ending and night time slowly arrives. The track Beachball is amazing and an ode to Brian Wilson.

I have to agree about the Dan Auerbach; I've never listened to the Black Keys but got that album and it struck me as a early 70s pop style album. Glen Campbell could have covered these songs and taken them to number one if they had been written back then! That is a great Johnathan Edwards album and is easy to find in the dollar bins. He went on to record a bluegrass album with the Seldom Scene called Blue Ridge. Nice selection of summer albums, enjoyed, Elliott

I would add, Nothings Shocking by Jane's Addiction. It was one of those albums that got released in the fall and was slow to take root, at least in the Midwest. But, by the summer of 1989 it was the only thing us alt kids listened to.

Wow, a great selection and have to agree with a bunch of those, and yes to the Byrds Greatest Hits, I had an OK copy for a bunch of years that I picked up for $2 in the 80's at a little thrift store here in Tacoma but 4 years or so ago, found a much nicer original stereo pressing of that one at Everyday Music in Seattle for not too much. I also have the original stereo copy of Groovin' (great LP!) but the thing is, I get ear worms from it every time I play it for a few days afterwords. On To Love Somebody got me when I first played the LP as it's stereo is the ping pong affect in it. I have the Rhino Anthology of the Rascals on CD (2 disc set) and I think they used the mono version instead there as they even say, some tracks are in mono, just because they rock. Love it's a Beautiful Day self titled, great album and agree on some Beach Boys for summer music. Recently did pick a decent but slightly older pressing of the Very Best of the Lovin' Spoonful on Kuma Sutra for $5 at Hi Voltage's bargain bins, along with AWB's Cut the Cake, total, $10. Both fair to good and were worth the tenner I spent. Lots of good choices and agree that Hot Fun in the Summertime by Sly and his family Stone is fantastic. I have the later CD greatest hits and a lot of great stuff on that CD. This video adds more fuel to the fodder to make my own summer tape/CD that's been swirling around in my mind off and on for a few years. :-)

Hi Mazzy, Love that DJ rap. Ah, a man after my own heart. The Beach Boys.... I mean is there a band that is a better antidote to a depression. Pet Sounds, Smile Sessions. I will try to go see the Beach Boys this year and Brian Wilson if he tours... unfortunately he is not together with the Beach Boys. What's wrong with that picture. Yep, Exile a must. Kicks... an amazing song. My favorite ELO album Out of the Blue. My God. Youngbloods, Zombies... love Groovin'..... Skylarking another masterpiece. Raspberry Beret... a very summery tune if there ever was one. I guess one of my favorite all time summer singles is Time of the Season of the Zombies... but definitely Summer in the City is up there. Another one is Hot Fun in the Summertime Sly and the Family Stone and the Kinks.... "in the summer time... doom doom doom.... forget the title... sorry." That’s some really hep material there Wolfman Jack.Steppin Out was a great PR song. My fave? Great airplane strike. Youngblood’s, get together is an anthem. Well said. Groovin! Heck yeah. Cavalleri is up there with Winwood and Van Morrison as great white soul singers. I like skylarking, but the version with dear god. Donovan! Heck yeah. You’d better pick up every stitch.
