When I was shooting 2 gun on a regular basis,I was shooting 1000 rounds of 9mm and 223 per month. As I impoved, I would wait till I shot a match as good as I could before I changed equipment. Once inside the top ten there are definitely time considerations related to equipment. But until you are shooting stages clean and efficient with whatever you currently own, there is no point chasing the latest trend, gadget, or setup. The best piece of equipment I had when I was competing was my fellow competitors. Their knowledge, willingness to share, encouragement, and amazing example helped me more than anything else. Combined with honesty about my skills and practicing those things I struggled with helped me become a much better shooter. 2 gun was the best training I ever did. Highly recommended.

I’m currently sitting in the mid-teens in the bigger two gun matches, and top 10 at smaller local matches. So I’m going to be chasing skill (over gear) until that improves exponentially

Keep at it. Best practical training I ever did was competing in 2 gun. I don't know how representative those videos are and it was hard to see all the hits, but my gut says you need to slow down one notch and get that clean sight picture. One less mag reload or follow up shot can make all the difference over five or six stages. Hard to tell without seeing you shoot in person, but that's what my gut kept saying watching. Thanks for a great video. You probably saved some new shooters thousands of dollars and hours of frustration.

I whole heartedly agree with keeping up with the Jones's point. I remember everybody getting on the enclosed emitter on pistols hype only to have failures like the seals being broken and the RD turning into a fish tank. Or the rear glass falling off and turning into open emitter RD. Also with prioritizing your finances, I know a guy who has several suppressors but complains night vision is to expensive. You figure around $1400 just in tax stamps and estimating/averaging each suppressor around $1500 x 7 ($10,500), you'd have enough for a night vision with thermal overlay or at least NV binoculars by now. John Lovell once said, would you rather have more guns than you can handle at one time and split range time with them or get the most training/range time with 1 or 2 firearms? I've limited myself to 3 guns (Rifle, "Duty Pistol", and CCW).

Concrete Cowboy is killing it In agreement 100% If I could make a comment, that I subscribe to the definition that "Training" is learning how to improve something or do something new through formal instruction with accountability and "Practice" is about performing enough reps so that one can apply their learned skills instinctively. I personally don't think these two words are interchangeable. I believe you hit on this point @05:04
@ConcreteCowboyxКүн бұрын
I gotcha! Yeah I tend to use them interchangeably but I guess literally they aren’t the same thing

Its a fine line between staying informed about developments on the gear side of things and slipping into gear consumerism. Good point about finances and putting other things first before shelling out cash for new gear. I'd say training is the best medicine for consumerism, If you're buying ammo and cultivating skill you've got less money for new guns.
@ConcreteCowboyxКүн бұрын
Haha literally told a friend this today. I spend money on ammo right after bills and 1st priority stuff. I’ve yet to finish my leg sleeve I started a few years ago because of this 😂

Great video subject matter. I'm loving the variation, Cowboy. Sometimes it's practical tips, sometimes it's gear review. Sometimes it's philosophy. This topic was a welcomed addition. Consumerism is rampant in this industry. Everyone is spending thousands to find a better mouse trap when, in fact, it's always the Indian, not the arrow... or in your case... the Cowboy. Keep these coming, sir!

I agree with this in so many ways because I’ve fallen into that trap of purchasing gear/ guns just because I could and because the guns were new and aesthetically pleasing. I have yet to take any classes and I’ve been a gun owner for years. No bueno. I’m now planning to downsize on my gun collection and focus on upgrading and training with only a few guns. I hate having to choose which guns to take to the range. You only really need your primaries and maybe some backups.

Spot on man. Dudes will spend thousands of dollars on tactical gear instead of practicing weapon manipulation and dry fire at home. It's nice to own all that gear, but being proficient with your weapons trumps owning a bunch of gucci gear. Also, spending all that money on gear instead of stocking up on food, water and medical supplies is a sign of incorrect priorities.

The consumerism comment hits hard for me. I know I am 100% guilty of this. So many of us chase gear or better equipment, thinking it will make us better. When really it comes down to your skill and experience.

I completely disagree with somebody ASSUMING that any # of, or percentage of people buy gear to make up for alack of training. There is absolutely no way you can know that. In fact, it would be foolish to use a less capable platform if you can afford to purchase better gear. Thats just dumb and even reckless if the purpose of the purchase is for defensive purposes. I can not ever remember anyone saying to me that they would rather spend their money on gear than on training. I am sure there are people that dont train who should but I doubt its a large enough sample to really matter. More importantly, if somebody wants to buy something, its really nobody elses business why. I shot competitively for about 7 years and at one point about 10 years had the largest channel on KZbin dedicated to shooting sports so I might know a little something.

He came out of the gate swinging! I'm so guilty of #1 it's not even funny! I straight up didn't see a range for 2 years! But bought gear! My only weak defense is that it was during covid so ammo was scarce and couldn't be purchased in bulk.
@ConcreteCowboyxКүн бұрын
Life happens and I can’t blame you for that. And gear isn’t evil by any means! It just can’t replace training, that’s all.

@T20-c8fКүн бұрын
@ I’ll tell my wife I’m cowboy approved! I agree tho. People are nuts. I have a buddy who has probably 7 or 8 different pistols and all of them have their Glock factory sights on them, no holsters, no flashlights, and a couple mags a piece. I’m like bro sell half of them and complete them already, you will be much happier with 1 or 2 fully set up pistols with mags, dots, holsters, war belt, and the ability to use them in competition as well as ccw than you will with all that crap. He also hates if they get a scratch on them. Meanwhile my Glock 34 looks like it’s been to hell and back but it runs very well and I shoot much better and further with my RMR when we go together than he ever can. It just doesn’t make sense to me. I buy one nice thing a year for myself. Last year it was an LMT enhanced BCG and bolt. This year it was a Steiner mps and 12oclock mount for my badger condition one nx8 2.5-20 setup. Next year I’m hoping for a suppressor but I’ll settle for a nice flashlight

My only disagreement is that gear can't help or supplement skills. It can IF it is vastly superior to your current gear or is the first purchase. As an example, using a generic budget rifle for PRS is going to be far worse than a custom or high-end factory build. Running optics with insufficient quality versus getting the better mid-high end glass is going to yield a worse result. Range finders for your rifle that are tailored to your load data will give you a precise accurate fire solution far faster and far more reliably than even seasoned veterans. If you want recoil reduction without having to build alot of weight, you need a compensator/brake, if you want your gun to be less concussive, you need a suppressor. Getting the latest and greatest IS worth it IF it offers a tangible large improvement in performance.
