Everyone expects their gun to shoot sub moa at 100 yards or its junk. That simply is not what these rifles were designed to do. Its a medium range combat rifle not a target rifle or varmint rifle. I would say most of them were plenty accurate for their intended purpose.
@RhodokTribesman3 жыл бұрын

ok for 7.62x39 as a caliber, biggest issue is that it goes subsonic and hits that transonic threshold around 550ish yards. so, trying to shoot that caliber farther than that isnt really viable. however, it should easily be able to hit point targets out to 500 yards. also ammunition choice is important. tula, is not going to group like hornady. as a slightly unrelated aside, ive shot my ak74 out to 400 with open sights and it worked fantastically. so the platform is solid. my biggest gripe about an AK is that i cant build one with a wrench like i can an AR. because if i could i totally would.

Of course the 7.62x39 drops velocity fairly fast, its a big heavy bullet in a shell casing with barely enough propellant out of a barrel barely long enough to let enough gas build up. Which is why the old NATO 7.62x51 made a better sniper round and a great lmg round, but was a bit much for assault rifles(ask the poor Brits who were stuck with the FN FAL) and thus the U.S. picked the 5.56... Or at least that's how I've come to understand it.
@dorianvujica39465 жыл бұрын
@@pex_the_unalivedrunk6785 7.62x39 isnt standard issue calibre anymore i dont think, pretty sure its 5.45 now because of the reason you stated, 7.62x39 is great but that round was literally mimiced off the 7.92 kurz round, Kalshnikov took a 54r round and and necked it down to a x39 and it performed well enough to be mass produced, then vietnam happened and it was good BUT THEN Afghanistan happened and they realized its not good enough, times changed and wars and battles are fought further away with small arms so they swapped to flatter shooting 5.45 without losing the lethality of the weapon. Basically AK platform is 70+ years old now, if it sucked wed have no modern AKs.
@xmm-cf5eg5 жыл бұрын
@Dorian Vujica Kalashnikov did not "neck down a 7.62x54R" round, the 7.62x39mm round was first invented for a few weapon prototypes, including the RPD machine gun in 1943, hence the designation "m43" existing for 7.62x39mm. Kalash had nothing to do with inventing the intermediate rifle round the soviets adopted, he just made a gun that used it. That's like saying the designer of the Glock invented 9x19 Luger because his gun fired it. This shit is easy to look up and only takes a few minutes, c'mon man.

Rifle platforms were designed with specific purposes in mind. When you understand what these purposes are you understand what the rifle can do. The AK was intended to be a general purpose battle rifle for the average guy with average accuracy inside of moderate distances. Pushing an AK out to 600 yards with DMR accuracy is simply not what the platform or caliber was designed for. If you employ the rifle in its designed parameters you will find that it does the job very well. I tell people if they wanna shoot at 600 yards or further with a semi-auto look at something else because the AK is not it. Barrel harmonics matters a lot, when you fire it acts like a plucked guitar string with the end of the barrel acting as the vibrational node on typical rifles. The gas block placement on the AK is like putting your finger on the string, changing the vibration exactly the same as it would a guitar string. The only way to eliminate barrel harmonics is with a specially structured barrel.

Neither American cartridge is used for 800 yard shots and we should understand the Russian calibers have the same ballistic issues.

I have heard that a lot an trained extensively with the AK. Most of the time I heard that, it happens that: 1)The operator zeroed the sights for a specific type of ammo and then switch to another type of ammo without re-zeroing the sights. Any AK should get its sight zeroed for the specific type of ammo the operator is using - even if it was just take out of the factory box. 2)Worn up barrel/bad headspace. This is especially true on the used gun market. Many unexperienced owners think the AK platform doesn't need any kind of maintenance due to its inherent rugged design. That's not true for anything with any sort of mechanical moving part or part exposed to the elements or corrosive particles. They shot thousands rounds through it without cleaning nor storing it properly. Wear will eventually level up (Worn down) the rifling and corrosion will exponentially speed up the process. 3)No marksman skills. The operator can't hit a target for the sole reason he is a damn bad shot. Bad trigger control, bad breathing technique, no skeletal or external support to the natural point of aim. And the gun gets blamed for the bad results. BTW: AK vs. AR. Both gun can hit and kill effectively 200-250 yards and hit targets effectively up to 400 yards IF the operator is a skilled marksman, quality ammo is used and the weapon was properly maintained and set up.

@thforres5 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. The AK is not an inherently inaccurate platform. The M1 Garand was a long stroke piston gun with a 2 lug rotating bolt, and its accuracy is legendary in the shooting world (M1 Garand accuracy is superb for a basic infantry rifle, but it still leaves much to be desired). I definitely agree that the service member experience with the AK is a huge contributing factor. Especially when you account for the poor condition those AK rifles are in, and the relative lack in training of those wielding them. I think that your point about the 7.62x39mm round being a sub 400m round is poignant, and really that's what it was designed for. I also agree that the headspace and barrel harmonics are the most important parts, and with care taken to ensure those are on point, the AK will be as accurate as you can make it. Which leads me to another point. You mentioned that the reputation has harmed the rifle mechanically, and I'd agree with that. I'd go a step further and say that early import AK's probably didn't have the care and precision needed to make them superb competition to the AR, especially in the early 2000's after AWB expired. The accuracy and quality reported by a lot of folks in their newer AK's does not match with my experience using my Dad's older Romanian SAR-1. Not that I think it's a bad rifle, but even newer SAR-1's reportedly offer better accuracy, and I think that has a lot to do with the growing popularity of the rifle here in the states, and the demands of the US market. That desire to meet market demands has very likely caused companies to pay more attention to the machining on the critical parts of the rifles. I like the AK, and I like it more and more, as I learn more about it. I gravitated to the AR platform because it's what I was issued and it's what I know, and for a first "assault rifle" I think it was the best choice for me. The AR has some definite advantages over the AK, and it's especially evident when you use the same caliber. The Stoner system really makes it easy to get repeatable results due to the straight line recoil impulse (something only shared by blowback designs, like the HK roller-delayed guns). The AK likes to buck and jump because of the off axis piston (something that all gas operated rifles not using the Stoner system will suffer, to varying degrees). The star shaped 7-lug pattern on the AR bolt also makes lockup more positive, secure, and spreads the stresses more evenly around the radius of the bolt, making chipping and shearing less likely (though it still happens in high round counts). If I had to pick a single word to describe the AR, it would be "elegant". Doing the same thing for the AK, I'd say, "dramatic". While the AR has a lot going on, it's all covered up and very composed, while the AK just hangs it all out for the world to see. I think that both have their place. The last point I wanted to address,is the supposed reliability problems with the AR. The early M16's got a bad name that wasn't really justified. The rifle was designed to fire a specific load, which the US Army then completely changed. They went with the XM193 round, which had problems working in the 1:14 twist barrels of the M16, and the change in powder messed with the way the rifle was tuned. Further compounding things, the rifle was not issued with cleaning kits, as the Army had touted the rifle as not needing cleaning. Once the rifle was tuned to make use of the new round, and cleaning kits were issued, the rifle performed flawlessly. I though that it was worth noting that the M16's problems were not inherent to the design, in as much as they were caused by Administrative inadequacies. Overall, very good video, it got a sub from me. Keep up the good content.
@fireteammichael17775 жыл бұрын
Wasn't it Colt, after purchasing design from ArmaLite, that touted the "maintenance free" rifle to the army? Then again, the army would have tested this, though it's said the rifles were rushed through as fast as possible to turn the tides of war in a jungle; and likely didn't face much in the way of "torture testing," as well as improper propellant being used like you stated. Either way, I agree with and applaud those that point out the facts opposed to just trashing the whole platform; not unlike this gentleman regarding the AK platform and accuracy.
@oldannyboy375 жыл бұрын
It wouldn't be my first choice for a long range shooting competition, but AKs are not nearly as inaccurate as people think. When I sold my hunting rifles a while back I used a MAK 90 with a 5 round magazine as a hunting gun. The last deer I dropped was at just over 180 yards with the irons. Not a super long shot, but a single shot dropped a deer close to 200 yards without much effort. For the life of me, I can't think of any self defense scenario that takes place at that sort of range. I can reliably hit/kill a man sized target at around 200 yards easy (I've killed multiple deer that way), so it's more than good enough for self defense in my eyes. If you take the time to zero them and then use decent ammo (at least when you're trying for more accuracy) the guns will surprise you. Our ranges here only go out to 300 yards, so I haven't been able to stretch mine out farther than that recently, but within 300 yards it works decently well. People take their rifles off the shelf, don't zero them, run Tula, and wonder why they gun isn't shooting well. I've seen that a lot.

As an AR fan, I still hate when people say AK (or even SKS) or completely inaccurate. Honestly, they're going to be more accurate than 95% of shooters. You don't need a 1/2" MOA. You need to hit a torso. Putting bullets into the same hole, over and over again, isn't a good way to take down a target, anyways.
