Went to college in VA and I can tell you that I have never seen a state with so many cops. Especially when driving down 81 Southbound, there was a cop every 200 yards. They band radar detectors not because they "could put cops in jeopardy", but because it would kill their profits. If you are traveling through VA, keep your detector on and drive fast.

I've heard that you can also keep a bubble envelope with your address in the car and immediately put the detector in it and seal it up if you are being stopped. They can't take or open the envelope without a warrant,cause it's interfering with federal mail.

As a retired officer in Va, a couple of additions. I agree about placement of a detector. But, a radar detector is a secondary offense meaning you can’t be stopped for the detector alone. If you a good driver you should be safe. Second, the offense is a non-moving violations. This means only a civil penalty and no points on your license.

Hmm. I got pulled over for my radar detector while (traveling) down 234. The cop already had someone pulled over and when I drove by I guess he seen it. Then he pulled me over moments later and I a got ticket for my radar only. Since you mentioned it's not a primary offense, were my rights violated?

#5: install a kill switch so you can turn it off without raising your arms / moving your shoulders in case you do get stopped. The detector will also not start up if you turn the key to ON to lower you windows. I'm speaking from experience.

Christopher M Yes, I have the unfortunate luck of first hand experience. In VA, they can ticket you if the Radar Detector Is in the vehicle whether it is on or off, or even if it is on & you are going below the speed limit! I was told by the officer. if I was traveling thru VA & had a radar detector in my vehicle to stop at the state line when entered VA, turn off the radar and place it in the trunk of the car or if I was in a truck to place it in the crossover or secure it otherwise in the back, but not in the front of the vehicle where a passenger or the driver could reach it from the front of the vehicle.

Ran a V1 in VA for years without a problem. Hampton Roads area. Kept it hidden above the driver visor and put tape on the LED lights to dim the bright lights. Ran one from 98-2013 then switched to ALP laser jammer.

Or you can tie a couple of enhancement-mode PMOS FETs to the alarm light on your detector to disable your brake lights whenever the detector alarms. When the alarm stops, your lights work again. If somebody's tailgating you, well, it's shame on them.

You hit the nail right on the head. These are all rules I have abided by for the last 15+years. Vigilance is also a key proponent. 100 success rate. Also I'm implement shadowing a "rabbit". Most agency's utilize the basic doppler radar. It picks up the fastest closest object. This is another tool to add into your arsenal.

Most unfair state for speeding tickets. I have had multiple troopers lie about my speed and did not use radar but "paced" my vehicle to detect speed. When in court the judge is always going to take the troopers word over yours.

At the risk of stating the obvious, another factor here is that the law contradicts Federal law, specifically Federal Communications Act of 1934, 47 U.S.C. § 151, which guarantees citizens the right to monitor whatever radio signal we want to so long as we don't cause interference. Whelp, *RADAR is a radio signal* Its first two letters come directly from the word "radio" so there's no doubt about that. Sadly this has already been denied despite the Federal statute at least once in DC District Court (Smith et al v. DC 1981). But that argument (as well as the argument for the Virginia law itself) begins from the premise that the *ONLY* purpose of a radar detector is to evade speed enforcement, which is a strawman argument assuming conclusions not in evidence. I think I got my first RD sometime in the '80s and I have *never* used it for that purpose. I'm a radio guy and I monitor anything. Built my first radio and got my amateur radio license long before I was old enough to shave. I can (and do) monitor planes flying across the Atlantic or the CIA sending coded spy messages. I can run a scanner to see what my local police or EMT are doing --- all legal. This is no different. So this bogus state law attempts to deny me, as a bona fide US citizen, a federally guaranteed right -- the right to simply be aware of what's out there. And that's a completely different question from the practice of circumventing a speed law. I have no interest in speeding. I don't drive for speed; I enjoy the driving experience and the idea of making it end as soon as possible is one that I find bizarre. That doesn't mean I don't want to know what radio signals are out there at the same time. I might monitor CIA spy codes but that doesn't mean I'm acting on them. I might hear the position of United Airlines 1422 on its journey but that doesn't mean I'm affecting it. Same thing. This is a bad law based on bad logic and it needs to go yesterday. And by 'yesterday' I mean specifically 1934.

I mount mine above my inspection sticker with my parking barcode sticker that is above it completely blocks the view of it. And I have the wiring going through the dashboard so there's no way you can see it from the outside. And the stickers do not affect the performance. I have yet encountered any police with RDD's.

it's not just that - they will actually watch your front bumper. If you roll into a speed trap and they see your front bumper dive as a result of the front suspension loading up after hitting your brakes, they'll pull you over.

I got a ticket when the bastard pulled up behind me and turned on his radar. I hit my brakes which clued him in I had a detector. Next time, just take your foot off the brakes and not right away. He is just testing. This is the most common trick they use.

I can't drive 55, as Sammy Hagar says. Never could, never will. For the electronic savvy, it is trivial to tie the ground wires from your brake lights to ground through a heavy depletion-mode FET transistor and the gate to the warning light in your detector. When the detector activates, the brake lights are disabled. If somebody is tailgating you, too bad for them. You could time it also, so that it only disables for 2 - 3 seconds to give you time to gather your thoughts and get off the brake pedal.

That same STI magnum radar detector which is 100% undetectable but built for us truckers is what I bought years ago but sold it. Question why would I use a radar detector especially in a semi truck knowing damn well radar detectors are illegal period to have in commercial trucks ?? Also why would I use a radar detector by itself knowing damn well it’s useless if the cop try’s to target my speeds either using Lidar or close range radar. That’s why ROCKY MOUNTAIN RADAR MILITARY TECHNOLOGY IS BY FAR THE BEST👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽. Because regardless if your cop and try reading my speeds up close the scrambler will not allow you to read unless your 150ft from the officer. But even if the officer hits you that close he still can’t get any reading on your speeds because there’s a 8 second delay on his computer but slower, before they could get any lock on your speeds. 150ft away from a officer is stupid close and that is why it is very hard to get tickets when using this technology because you can’t see your target moving period. This is November of 2020 and look how long since then I started using this scrambler technology

I have been using a scrambler now for all these years now and been saying how easily police can get your speeds when using a regular radar detector in your vehicle. Now your eyes are finally open in why I do not believe in using a radar detector by itself. It’s useless up against a police radar or laser speed trap by far. Here it’s going on almost 2 decades I still use a scrambler today. I’ve been traveling throughout Virginia and many other states in this country because I drive big rigs. A scrambler is very very powerful but it’s military computer software which is why people can’t test it properly because it’s only connected to police computer systems regardless of what country you may live🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

Vortex radar has tested Rocky Mountain Radar scramblers and they DO NOT WORK. Besides they are technically illegal per FCC. They are illegal in the state of Tennessee. The company has received letters from the FCC warning them to stop manufacturing and advertising. It might work on a work bench from 5 ft away but not in the real world.

Anything like this that protects me out there is all it matters. It doesn’t matter how much money you spend on a radar detector but without a scrambler shield your a sitting duck out there. Radar detectors are only designed to alert you in time to slow down which is why u must hide and stay far away from police from reading your speeds. But a scrambler I can walk up on very closely. Because of that invisible bubble which forms a half circle around your vehicle meaning the front and side doors is what’s invisible when using a scrambler. So if the cop sits somewhere on a parking lot and tries reading your speeds he’ll never get reading unless your hit from the rears. A regular radar detector cannot offer protection like that period.... because there’s huge difference when able to see your target moving and not able to see anything there period 👀🙆🏽‍♂️🙆🏽‍♂️

#1 is stupid and wrong. RDD's are NOT only found in Virginia in fact they come standard built in to modern radar guns and devices. Not only that, but no radar detector is 100% undetectable, and every time radar detector technology advances and becomes harder to detect, RDD technology also advances. The only 100% guaranteed way not to get caught with a RD is to not have it plugged in.

It has never been detected. I drive a commercial vehicle. I was passed by five Louisiana State Police Troopers just today and none of them even knew I had it with me. Even though they also run rdd to catch us truckers with detectors. Got a 3.4 mile detection from a Texas trooper off i-10 also. Total stealth is real but you have to pay for it. My redline has never let me down.
