I think it’s easy to think every home defense situation is a rush to respond to a known intruder. Reality is probably more dynamic than we think. We hear a noise or see something unidentifiable in our security cameras. Having options in our nightstand is probably the best defense. I agree with a weapon mounted light, but also a separate flashlight for searching when the situation dictates. I don’t want to point a loaded weapon at anyone I don’t want to shoot and accidentally pull the trigger if I’m startled. Until you’re put in that situation, you won’t know exactly how you’ll respond. We all think we’re the best at trigger and muzzle control, yet accidents still happen.

No kidding. Thought my house was being broken into last week bc Amazon now has some drivers starting before 6 am. Well at 6 am it's pitch black outside, I'm being awoken to my dog going berserk and see the shadow of someone at my front door who shouldn't be there. Much better to have a separate flashlight to check that out than pointing a gun in their direction first since they weren't an intruder.

My dad is a retired marine and he always instilled in me to never use a light and use the darkness as well as to let them come to you since you know the layout of your house in the dark and they don’t. I personally have a light on my gun as well as a backup light because I live with others and I don’t want to just shoot into the dark and hit someone or something I didn’t mean to. I want to identify my target first and assess the situation and then fire if need be. When I’m home alone then it’s go time if I hear anything but when I’m not I have to be more careful. I’ve had to clear the house twice. Once was soemthing fell off the wall in the garage. And second was a glass ornament that fell off the Christmas tree. Jsut sounded like glass breaking to me so I immediately grabbed my gun and a flashlight. Hopefully I never have to deal with a real intruder but if I do I hope I come out on top.

1) Light - I 100% agree. Most important 2) Red dot - I agree, only if the iron sights are still usable. If the battery dies your screwed. 3) Suppressor height sights - Yes, if you have a red dot. 4) Suppressor - Nope. It is harder to hide, adds weight, you need a booster in most cases (more to go wrong) and many people can't afford them. Your right, it couldn't hurt. 5) Extended Mags - Meh, I could go either way. 15 is enough if you train. Personally I prefer a tactical shotgun for in home defense. Different strokes for different folks. Good video.

I like John Lovell’s take on suppressors, they’re cool, but I want my gunfire to wake the neighbors and scare the piss out of the second or third dude. I keep electronic EarPro right next to my rifle, if I have a second or two to throw it on, that will give me a great advantage. If not, oh well. Lt. Col. David Grossman addresses this in his book On Combat. I suggest everyone read his books. Honestly, anyone who is on a jury for a shooting should have to read it. It explains exactly what the body goes through during stress and how it reacts to it. The majority of people firing a weapon under stress never even heard or was affected by the noise of the gun fire or what was going on around them. Tunnel vision and the natural reaction of the body to protect itself from injury during event like this. For this reason,. Suppressor is a non issue for me. Aside from giving the authorities an open invitation into my home anytime they want. All set.

Most people should be able to know if the person is supposed to be there by audio and floor vibration. You should know their sounds, silence, foot steps/walking weight, walking pattern. Light should be used as a distraction to screw up the perps adjusted night vision more than identification. In general, shoot AT the gun. It's almost always in line with heads, chest, neck arteries.

1. Hand light and pointing it at the ceiling (light up the whole room instead of a corner). 2. Red dot, yes 3. Tall iron sights arent needed if that gun is a "home defense gun" (if the battery runs out you just fill the red dot sight with the target). 4. Suppress if you have that option. 5. Your not concealing so get a big mag.

Modern weaponlights are so bright you don't have to point it at the threat. In a home pointing at the floor or ceiling will illuminate the room. Or just turn on the lights, you know where the switches are.
@napalmstickylikeglue
@napalmstickylikeglue 2 жыл бұрын
Don't turn on your room lights because that gives the threat an advantage. Using a flashlight or a weapon light is more effective because it can cause temporary blindness at the right distance which results in disorientation. If you light up the whole room and the lights not coming from you then the individual will be able to Target you easier.

I humbly agree about suppressors. And I think suppressors should be argued for protecting and keeping healthy hearing for civilian use. And to protect everyone else's hearing. Also, you never know if the intruder has an accomplice, so having your hearing intact and ready incase someone is sneaking up on you is definately a must. So it's not only good for protecting the family's hearing, but also for people who live alone. I admit, I know jack about home defense... what I said seemed to make sense to me. So take what I say with a grain of salt.

Extended mag side by side shows a lot less muzzle flip, something someone like myself needing way more time on the range w/ the pistol is very much helpful. Adrenaline dump, 3-5 intruders are very common, do they have vests on, does one have a shotgun, all sorts of stuff to consider. Then again this goes back to hardening your house as well. Simple things like that garage loop (or noose if we're the FBI *facepalm) down at the bottom needs to be raised is an easy example. A few 4$ stickers of an alarm company Decreases your chances of a home invasion by 300%. Motion activated floodlights, cameras (10$ can get you the latter these days.) Anyways, whatever you feel most comfortable w/ & can afford is your best option. But training above all else. Speaking as someone needing it but can't afford it lol. God bless, cheers.

In fairness, the extended versus not extended footage that he did in the video were 2 very different guns, one being an all steel 9mm and the other being a polymer 45acp, extended mags in full size guns aren't really going tk make a difference in terms of shootability, I think the clip was just supposed to illustrate the difference in the amount of rounds you have

Mondays are not busy in the morning, so it’s best to be there early. I had to teach a guy not to point his gun at me while reloading. Yes it makes me upset, but he was a beginner and I was teaching him about how he was holding his weapon and how to hold it the right way and to try his sights. He was missing the paper target and it’s a big target. He finally learned and thanked me. I didn’t want his money. Just teaching him and he could have shot someone on accident. Glad I was there. Great video. Our choices are similar. IF I could have a high capacity 1911 .45 ACP with the ability to have a Crimson Trace Lasergrip and a Surefire X300 on the front, that would be my choice. But that is not possible. So for more than ten years now, my main home defense pistol has been my Kimber TLE-RL II with Meprolight Night Sights, Crimson Trace Lasergrips and Surefire X300 weapon light. And I have the optional Surefire extended switch that allows me to turn the weapon light on and off from the grip. It rests just above the button for the laser. This setup works perfectly. A little pressure from my middle finger on the two switches and the laser comes on. A little more pressure and the light comes on with the laser dot in the middle of the beam. I like the fact that the laser allows me to not only focus on the intruder (as a red dot does, too), but also allows the ability to shoot accurately with the pistol not up in a line of sight with my eyes. And given the fact that the Kimber is actually a backup weapon to my S&W Saint AR pistol with a red dot and a flashlight (and 30 rounds in the magazine), I am not all that worried about having "just" nine bullets in the pistol. ;-) P.S. I didn't know you have a G Wagon. I do, too. Love it!

After having taken the Sig Sauer Low Light Pistol Operator course, I’m a big fan of not running a light on my handgun. You brought up the point that without a light, people could accidentally shoot a member of their own family, or friend in their house, rather than an intruder. With a light mounted, as you mentioned, we would automatically flag the person we point the light at. I also like the ability to quickly strobe the room and utilized reflexive shooting if needed, or to have the light angled up and away from my head, so if an intruder shoots at the light (what they’re most likely to aim at if they’re going to shoot back), they won’t necessarily be aiming at me - but rather my light, which is away from me. You brought up some good points about suppressors, and I couldn’t agree any more about the full size pistol with and extended mag and a red dot sight! Red dot sights are game changers. Now if only my vaultek slider series would allow for storage of a full size pistol, with an extended mag and suppressor.

I've heard some point out that gun-mounted lights can be chosen that have wide halos surrounding the central spotlight, and you can use the halo instead of the spot in order to avoid flagging people. But I agree with you. You will probably need to use a handheld light far more often than any gun with a GML, so it's best to have a separate light and not to pull your piece every time you need illumination.
@Yurkevich22

You are just wrong about flagging someone automatically if you need to turn your light on. Why? Becasue you don't have to point the light exactly at what you need to light up. You can point the light at the floor, the wall, the ceiling, etc. Light is not a bullet, light has spill, it goes in all directions.

@@NoWr2Run naturally, yes. Just practice and train not to do it, that's all you need. Go around your house a few times at night, with an unloaded gun and just practice turning the light on and off, you'd be surprised how much you learn. @@Yurkevich22 Sure, this is true! You could point the light to the wall in the general direction of your target, but off to the side. I’d rather not be clearing a room and have to think “ok, I think the person is in this section, so I’m going to shine my light a little off of them to see who they are..” in a real home intruder situation, under stress, I doubt I - or most - would be in the actual frame of mind to think through all of that. I think having body armour is important too just quickly strap it on when you hear something, but I think what's even more important than having a gun is the ability to be able to hear someone breaking in, if you live in a larger house especially it is extremely important to have glass breakers, and alrams. In case the power drops or they shut down the power before entering your house then you need to make sure that those things can run on a backup generator. This is very obvious but a lot of people forget it, lock your damn doors, all of them, and make sure your bedroom door is locked too. Make sure you have your handgun in a holster ready to go righ on ur night stand. Make sure you have a rifle with a sling on it and 60 rounds of ammo, make sure the barrel is short enough for you to maneuver around the house, suppressors are recommended, make sure you have a flashlight, an ir laser, and some optics for close quarters, and some back up irons in case your optics die. Make sure you have the same thing with your handgun. You should practice being proficient with your weapons on a regular basis. I've mentioned this before but I like to have body armour for every member of the family. If you really want to get crazy then place night vision cameras in the kitchen, living room, and the outside of everyone's bedroom. Make sure you also have cameras on the outside of your house too, a big dog can also help prevent people from entering your house. When you leave the house never forget to turn on the alarm, and make sure nobody is following you after you leave the house. Intruders most of the time will break into your house when nobody is there, so make sure their aren't any sus vehicles or people driving and walking around your house, make sure your backyard door is locked. If you live in a home in the middle of the country then make sure you have a scope on your gun that can reach far distances but then have an offset red dot optic on that same gun. make sure your primary home defense guns are cleaned and lubed so that they're extra reliable, I like to keep a short barreled ar, a shotgun, and my handgun right next to me, I also like to keep those types in my car as well and I keep one handgun in the garage, the kitchen and I make sure that the guns that I keep in those places can feed the exact same magazines, and ammo.

Very good advice sir. I would add if you can't afford or don't want the hassle of getting a suppressor, keep some electronic ears next to your nightstand gun so you can quickly equip them during that bump in the night. Cameras, alarm systems, reinforced locked doors/windows, guard dogs, night vision are all great recommendations and will deter most criminals unless the mafia, drug cartels, or government got a bounty on your head lol.

What is considered an “extended magazine”? Is it a magazine that extends past the bottom of the mag well? Not necessarily. There are guns like the 1911 with only 10 rounds that extend well beyond the mag well. Are extended magazines extended beyond what is needed in a self defense situation? If you do get it back, it won't be in the condition it was in whenever it was stolen from you. Meaning that scratches, gouges will likely be present.
